Valtteri Bottas took pole position for the Eifel Grand Prix in a fight with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Bottas grabbed top spot with his final lap to take pole by 0.256 seconds after Verstappen set the pace on the first runs in final qualifying.

It was the closest Mercedes have come to being beaten in qualifying this year but Verstappen slipped back to third. Charles Leclerc took fourth for Ferrari to equal their best 2020 grid position.

Bottas' lap brought to an end a run of five consecutive pole positions for Hamilton, who was never quite in the fight for pole. It was the Finn's third pole of the year, his previous ones coming at the opening race in Austria and the second Silverstone race, the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

  5. Today's timespublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 10 October 2020

These are all the times. Nico Hulkenberg, with the briefest of warnings before jumping into the car, ended 20th, but only two tenths off Kimi Raikkonen.

The Finn will break the all-time record of most F1 starts tomorrow as long as there are no technical problems. He does so from the back row. An attempt to qualify from Q2 on the medium tyres proved costly for Sebastian Vettel as he's 11th, with his team-mate Charles Leclerc fourth.

Mercedes continue their perfect qualifying record in 2020. Eleven races, 11 poles, but Valtteri Bottas takes the glory, ending Lewis Hamilton's record of starting at the front in each of the past five races.

  7. 'Overall a decent qualifying'published at 15:20 British Summer Time 10 October 2020

Max Verstappen, who starts third on the grid: "It was an interesting qualifying. After missing the whole of yesterday, it was very busy.

"Overall I think a decent qualifying. In Q3 we were understeering too much. When it's so cold and you're understeering so much, you're graining the front tyres, which cost me a bit of lap times.

"But overall, I think we are getting closer towards Mercedes, which is very positive. Little bit disappointed as I was expecting a little bit more but it is what it is. I can still be happy.

"It's going to be even colder tomorrow, so it'll be even more interesting as to what the tyres are going to do. The track is fun to drive."

  8. 'A lot to play for'published at 15:18 British Summer Time 10 October 2020

Lewis Hamilton, who starts second, says: "When I look at the data there will be plenty of time [he could've gained]. Valtteri is two tenths ahead so he did a good job and congratulations to him.

"It's an amazing circuit, one of the historic circuits we have so definitely great to be back here.

"It's how the tyres behave, whether it's a one-stop or two-stop race. Going behind a safety car in these conditions will be tough but there's a lot to play for."

  9. 'Nice feeling when you get it done'published at 15:16 British Summer Time 10 October 2020

Valtteri Bottas, who starts on pole position: "It's such a nice feeling when you get it done the last lap. The last lap in Q3 was spot on. It was nice to get it together.

"It's been pretty tricky with short practice and these conditions getting the tyres in the sweet spot, that was one of the bigger things today.

"We were leaving the garage more or less at the same time [as Lewis Hamilton] - he positioned to go first - but still there are things you can try and do on the out lap but ultimately when the tyre is there the lap was nice and I really enjoyed.

"Of course I believe I can win. That's the only goal for tomorrow and hopefully we can have a good start."

What a shame for Max Verstappen. He just didn't have the grip at the end there.

He was so close; just hundredths away from a front-row start. You've got to dig deep and improve but sadly for Red Bull didn't and tantalising close for Verstappen.
