After a six-year wait Hamilton won his second title and his first with Mercedes in 2014.

The race between he and team-mate Nico Rosberg came down to the final race but the Briton cruising to victory as Rosberg suffered car troubles.

As Hamilton crossed the line, Prince Harry, attending the race, took to the team radio to say: "Lewis, well done for not making the British public sweat. You are an absolute legend."

And FC Barcelona, no strangers to sporting success, tweeted a pic of Hamilton in their club colours.

Eliud Kipchoge, the first man to run a sub two-hour marathon, is quick to praise Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton won his first title in 2008 - his second season in F1.

In doing he so he became the youngest world champion in history, aged 23, although that record has since been taken by Sebastian Vettel.

Then at McLaren, he clinched the title in thrilling fashion with a last corner overtake of Timo Glock in the last race of the season.

Earlier this week Lewis Hamilton posted this great picture of him aged six proudly smiling after picking up his first trophies.

The trophies haven't stopped coming his way since.

Mercedes Valtteri Bottas, who finished down in 14th after a number of spins, said: "That was a long race, such a long day. At the start everything went wrong. Someone in the first corner spinning and I had a contact.

"The car was not the same anymore. I struggled to stay on track. It was survival.

"He [Hamilton] deserves it fully. He was better overall. It is really good for him. I will try to beat him next year."

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports about Lewis Hamilton and his future with Mercedes: "It shows how he is capable to the situation that went against him he was the only one who kept it on the road and that is the difference today.

"We have a really great relationship that has grown over all these years. I'm 100% behind him and he is 100% behind me and the team. This is why days like these, that are really difficult, and we still managed - or Lewis - still managed to pull it off."

"Look at what has happened today - he was as hungry as a lion, driving a car on slicks in the end. I don't see any of the motivation stopping.

"This year has been very, very special, in difficult circumstances for everyone around the world. I hope that we've entertained and that's why coming on top after such a year in such a tough race, it's exceptional."

On his future with the team: "I think that we are both a factor of each other. If I would go, Mercedes would still be winning and that's something I see as my obligation - that they still win in the future. But that moment has not yet come."

A winning margin of 31 seconds sounds boring but it was far from that.

We had five leaders - both the Racing Points, both the Red Bulls but in the end it was the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton that took the win.

By the way, Lando Norris, who came eighth, took home the fastest lap bonus point.

That's the second time this season he has done that after also doing likewise in the campaign opener in Austria back in July.

Third-placed Sebastian Vettel: "It was quite intense but good fun. I had a really good opening lap, I found myself already in P4.

"It is a bit of a surprise to snatch the podium but I am certainly very happy."

Racing Point's Sergio Perez, who finished second: "I told my team on the radio 'one more lap on those tyres, I think they will have exploded!' The vibrations were really bad towards the end.

"But I think it also made our race. Looking after them towards the beginning and towards the end, with drying conditions, I think the team did a fantastic job with the strategy in the race. Lewis today was extremely strong but we managed to get a result.

"I couldn't see anything on my mirrors as they were full of fog, then I saw Max run wide and he disappeared. Also with Charles, I wasn't aware he was so close to me. So in the final lap it was a pretty good battle. He overtook me into Turn Nine, then I took him back into 11. A strong result for us."

On his future in Formula 1: "I think you have to be delivering weekend after weekend, you are only as good as your last race, so it's important to end on a high but the rest is not in my hands."

More from an emotional Lewis Hamilton: "I also want to say a big, big thank for to team LH for sticking with all these years and to my family you know.

"We dreamed of this when I was young. It is so important for kids to see this and don't listen to anyone who says you can't achieve something. Dream the impossible. You have got to chase it and never give up.

"I lost a world championship in a pit lane. I learned my lesson from 2007. I felt I had it under control. I was going to deal with the rain if it dropped."

More from Hamilton: "There was a point Seb was pulling away from me and at the time I couldn't work out what it was. The grip started to come back and the track was drying in areas.

"I started to pick up pace. Seb pitted and for me I knew that wasn't the right choice. The intermediate tyre holds temperature. If I went out on new slicks I wouldn't have made it round.

"It was the best decision."

More from Lewis Hamilton: "I know I often I say it is beyond wildest dreams but my whole life secretly I have dreamt as high as this.

"It felt so far fetched. I remember watching Michael win those world championships. To get one or two or even three is so hard.

"Seven is unimaginable. There is no end to what we can do together, me and this team."

Lewis Hamilton after sealing his seventh world title: "Definitely a bit lost for words. I think I have to always start with saying a huge thank you to all the guys here and back at the factory for giving us this opportunity.

"I wouldn't be able to do this if I didn't join this team. The journey we have been on has been monumental."
