Sadly Romain Grosjean is unable to race today as he still recovers from that horrific crash and fire at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

But he has still sent this message to F1 and it's great to see him looking well.

  3. Who's driving for who in 2021?published at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

We still have three spots not confirmed for 2021 they are Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes, Alexander Albon's Red Bull and Daniil Kvyat's Alpha Tauri.

It's all change at Haas next year with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin replacing Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean.

One last chance today for Albon and Kvyat to convince their bosses.

  4. Six years at Ferrari a 'rollercoaster ride' - Vettelpublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

    Sebastian VettelImage source, Getty Images

Sebastian Vettel has described his six years at Ferrari as “a rollercoaster ride” as he heads into his final race with the team in Abu Dhabi.

The four-time champion said he felt an “emotional attachment” to Ferrari, but admitted he and the team had “failed” because they did not win the title.

Vettel said: “Looking back, there were a lot of things we should have and could have done better.

“The main thing is to make sure I learn from it, and I have grown from it.”

The 33-year-old is joining Aston Martin next year - the new name for the team currently known as Racing Point - after Ferrari told him before this season even started that they would not be renewing his contract.

Philip West: Has Vettel failed at Ferrari? In terms of his ultimate goal of delivering a title, yes, he has. But it hasn’t all been negative. 14 wins in the Mercedes era is a decent return, and hopefully the move to Aston Martin can rejuvenate him.

Simon John Thomas Stanley: Just like to say good luck to Kevin Magnussen, Daniil Kvyat and Sergio Perez on their last race weekend at Abu Dhabi. Whatever your future holds good luck.

Sebastian Vettel says arrivederci to Ferrari after this race, and unfortunately it would be hard to say the four-time champion is bowing out in style. In fact, this was Vettel’s worst qualifying of the season. Vettel has hardly ever been on terms with team-mate Charles Leclerc on Saturdays this year, but this was a new dimension - 0.7secs slower in Q2 despite Vettel being on the soft tyres and Leclerc on the mediums.

“It’s a mystery why there’s such a big delta between the cars,” Vettel said. “I don’t think anywhere in the pit lane there’s such a big delta. But I was happy with my quali and my laps. I would have loved to be higher up, but it didn’t quite work,” he added. “It was a good session. I’m happy with myself, not happy with the results, but it’s been like this many times this year.”

He added: “It will be emotional. Especially with the mechanics, the guys in the garage. Obviously, in terms of results, it’s not really a high. So I’m looking forward to seeing the chequered flag.”

Leclerc was outstanding - again - in going sixth fastest in Q2 on the medium, less than 0.5secs off Lewis Hamilton’s similarly-shod Mercedes. But the pace was not there on the softs - they went off badly in the final sector - and he starts ninth. But the mediums for the start - something only the Mercedes drivers, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz managed in the top 10 - gives him hope of a strong race.

Not a graphic Alexander Albon will enjoy looking at as Max Verstappen secured total dominance in the head-to-head qualifying battle. Seventeen out of 17 for the Dutchman.

George Russell also had a clean sweep against team-mate Nicholas Latifi, although the Briton was narrowly edged out by Valtteri Bottas by a few thousandths of a second in his cameo appearance for Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix last weekend.

Sergio Perez wins 11-3 against Lance Stroll for Racing Point. Yet it's Perez leaving the team.

The other results not listed are: Stroll 1-1 Nico Hulkenberg (Racing Point), Perez 1-0 Hulkenberg (Racing Point), Bottas 1-0 Russell (Mercedes), Latifi 1-0 Jack Aitken (Williams), Kevin Magnussen 2-0 Pietro Fittipaldi (Haas).

  13. The battle for thirdpublished at 12:02 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Behind the battle for the win, much attention in the race will be focused on McLaren and Racing Point and the battle for third in the constructors’ championship. Racing Point lead by 10 points but the McLarens had an outstanding qualifying session, with Lando Norris lining up a brilliant fourth on the grid, and Carlos Sainz sixth.

Sainz was not that happy with his lap in the top 10 shoot-out but he, too, had done brilliantly to progress through Q2 on the medium tyres so he can start the race on them.

The Racing Points start eighth (Lance Stroll) and 19th (Sergio Perez, who has a grid penalty for using too many engine parts). But Sainz knows the job is far from done.

“I am pretty convinced the Racing Points will finish in the top eight with the car they have and the pace they have shown,” he said. “There is still a race on and they will try to finish ahead. We will focus on our thing and try to finish in the positions we start in or maybe even move forward. It will be and interesting fight.”

Charles Leclerc is three places worse off than where he qualified as a penalty for an opening lap shunt with Sergio Perez last weekend that sent the Mexican to the back, although the Sakhir Grand Prix had a happy ending for Perez.

Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen have dropped to the back row after engine changes.

Two McLarens in the top six and that could be very good news for them indeed.

  16. Hamilton 'not 100%' fit as he recovers from coronaviruspublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

    Lewis HamiltonImage source, Getty Images

Lewis Hamilton will head into the final grand prix of the season in Abu Dhabi still suffering the after-effects of contracting coronavirus - and in the unfamiliar position of third on the grid.

The seven-time world champion missed last weekend's race in Bahrain with the disease, and although he tested negative in time to travel to Abu Dhabi and race, he is far from over its debilitating effects.

"I am not 100%," Hamilton said after losing out in the fight for pole to Red Bull's Max Verstappen and his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

"I still have some feelings in my lungs, but I would drive if one of my arms were hanging off. That's what we do as racing drivers. It won't be the easiest race but I will manage and give it everything I have got."

As with many people who have come out of the other side after coronavirus, Hamilton says the main issue for him is one of "overall energy".

"One of the symptoms is it really drains you," he said. "I have been trying to sleep as much as I can but recharging is not as easy as it has been in the past.

"Plus, I lost a good amount of weight in that week. So I am not 100% the same as I was last time I raced. But it is in no way going to get in the way of me giving it my all."

  17. Postpublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

World champion Lewis Hamilton was on provisional pole with three minutes of qualifying to go before both Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen took their places on the front row.

However, that is still some effort from Hamilton, coming only a week after he was out of action with Covid-19.

He's won 95 times in his career and if he can make it 96 today it will surely be one of his best achievements.

  20. Qualifying report - Verstappen snatches polepublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took a shock pole position at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Red Bull's first pole of a season dominated by Mercedes arrived as the Dutchman beat Valtteri Bottas by 0.025 seconds, with Lewis Hamilton third.

Only 0.086secs separated the top three in one of 2020's tightest sessions.

And Britain's Lando Norris produced an outstanding lap to take fourth in the McLaren, just 0.251secs off pole and ahead of Red Bull's Alex Albon.

The second McLaren of Carlos Sainz starts sixth, giving the team extra hope of overhauling their 10-point gap to Racing Point in their fight for third place in the constructors' championship, on which millions of pounds of prize money hangs.
