Over to BBC weatherman Ian Fergusson to give us the latest update...

"Air temperature 19C and the track 39C. A dry event lies ahead and much as yesterday, the north-northwestly wind has picked-up to give similar conditions to those in qualifying."

Drivers are saying the warm-up on the soft and medium is very similar. It's stint length and race pace that is the difference between the two tyres. This is not the same situation as last year - it was damp and much colder then.

James: I think Mercedes should just accept Bottas is the second fiddle in the team like Perez is to Verstappen. Would also be interesting to see if McLaren aid Mercedes at certain times throughout the year like it came across yesterday in qualifying.

Let them race! No-one wants team orders at the front in only the third race of the season.

This is an almost guaranteed one-stop race on a low-grip surface with low tyre degradation, safety cars allowing. Those starting on mediums have a chance to run much longer to their first stops. Pit-stop time loss is high at 25 seconds under racing conditions, 15 under safety car.

The question will be whether to stop early to protect track position or run longer to potentially benefit from a safety car and/or better tyres to overtake in the last part of the race. Carlos Sainz benefited in this latter way last year and gained a lot of places with a late stop, but last year overtaking was relatively easy, and the DRS overtaking zone has been shortened this year. So teams will be watching in the early laps to see how easy overtaking appears to be, and this will influence their strategy choices.

  8. We Race As Onepublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

Now is the time for Formula 1's message of unity as the We Race As One video - featuring all 20 drivers - is played out to the world.

As always, some drivers 'take the knee', some choose to stay standing.

  9. 'We have to hold on'published at 14:42 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports: "We can play the strategies differently if we are able to hold the position. Let's see. Max had a really good start in the last race so we have to hold on.

"How Valtteri is able to rebound from such a bad weekend [when he failed to finish at Imola after being hit by George Russell] and put it on pole here is impressive. He has it in him."

  10. Ricciardo 'can never be happy' with Q1 exitpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

A number of teams had major discrepancies between the pace of their two drivers in qualifying. Alpine I dealt with in a piece last night, but the biggest was McLaren, where Lando Norris starts seventh - and felt he could have been even higher had it not been for traffic on his final run - while Daniel Ricciardo was knocked out in first qualifying and is 16th. The Australian could not explain his lack of pace immediately after qualifying, but after taking time to analyse what went on, he had answer of sorts.

He says he is still adapting his style to the McLaren’s behaviour, but added: “I felt it was getting better this weekend and qualifying was not the real picture of how the weekend was going but that makes it even more disappointing.” But his qualifying unspooled for reasons beyond that.

“I can never be happy with a Q1 exit,” he said. “It all started in Turn One, I felt someone could have been a little kinder to me with traffic but then it kind of spiralled through the lap. I felt I was trying to over-drive to catch up and then by the last sector I had cooked a bit the tyres. What’s really penalising with this track is because it is such a low-grip circuit is really easy to slide and lose a lot of time. It can spiral out of hand and that lap really did.”

  11. Hamilton 'plans' to race in F1 in 2022published at 14:39 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

Lewis Hamilton says he intends to remain in Formula 1 for at least another season after this year.

The seven-time champion signed a one-year deal with Mercedes at the start of 2021 but said on Thursday that he "plans" to be in the sport next season.

He said he was "enjoying" his title fight with Red Bull's Max Verstappen and was determined to continue to fight against racism and for diversity.

Hamilton added: "I don't know how long I can stay, though. We will see."

His revelation about his wish to continue in F1 came in answer to a question about his participation in a tyre development test last week.

"I plan to be here next year and I want to help Pirelli in helping them towards having a better product," he said. "I am pretty spontaneous so it could always change. I am enjoying this battle we are having. It is getting more exciting. It has been even more of a challenge.

  12. Stuck on 99published at 14:37 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

Lewis Hamilton was denied pole by only 0.007 seconds and it would've been a landmark as it would've been 100 poles. Instead Valtteri Bottas, for the 17th time, got himself on pole.

The Finn has won five of the previous 16 occasions when he began at the front - Austria in 2017 and 2020, Abu Dhabi in 2017, Azerbaijan in 2019 and the United States in 2019.

Anon: Really interesting to see if the McLarens can push forward especially if Ricciardo can have a better day.I think the first corner is going to key if Bottas can hold it he could control this race as I don't see the total contenders risking moves against him.

Anon: This promises to be a belter of a race. Can't wait!

A step forward for Sebastian Vettel this weekend, after struggling to come to terms with the Aston Martin over the first two races. The team had their first set of upgrades this weekend, aimed at improving their pace after dropping back over the winter, but there was only enough for one car - and Lance Stroll got them. Vettel described this decision as “logical”, on the basis the Canadian had been more comfortable with the car so far this season. But Vettel outperformed Stroll anyway.

Vettel lines up 10th, and said: “It was better today for us. It was good just to be there in the car for an hour. So I enjoyed that, the final part the wind changed again. I had a better day and felt it was coming a bit more natural but there are still thins I have to think about when I want it to just happen so still a way to go.” Stroll is 17th, saying he lost feeling for the car when qualifying came around.

Teams are reporting gusts of up to 40km/h, which will make life very difficult for the drivers, especially at the corners at the top of the hill - Turns 11 and 14. And there is a tailwind at Turn Four, where track limits are an issue.

  19. Watch out for a thrilling startpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

That's a good point James makes as the mixture of softs and mediums caused chaos at the start of last year's race at Portimao.

Perez and Verstappen (now team-mates) collided, Carlos Sainz on the softs jumped up from seventh to first and Kimi Raikkonen zoomed up from 16th to inside the top 10, all inside the first few laps. Although it ended in a normal fashion with a final top three of Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen.

We had 58 overtakes in this race last year - the highest figure of the season. Same again, please.

Richard, Wigan: Hope Sainz gets a flyer off the line and gets right in the mix, that will put a spanner in the works.

James: Expect some serious warmup issues for drivers on the medium. Expect Sainz, Ocon and Norris taking the fight at the front until lap 3 when the mediums get to temp. Dilemma for Russell, best qualifying in P11 and will probably have to run softs at the start again.
