Deanna Troi: It's nice to see Daniel Ricciardo back at the top!

Jeremiah Kariuki: Ricciardo must be smiling despite the pressure he is in. He may have dreamt of being on the lead by lap 1, and he executed the dream very well.

Tanya Smith: We have a race!!! You love to see/hear it!

Daniel Ricciardo has a long time to hold on - and hold off - Max Verstappen in this grand prix but this would be a great performance.

  6. Gasly outpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 12 September 2021

A truly miserable day for Alpha Tauri. Tsunoda couldn't even start and team-mate Pierre Gasly is now out inside the first 10 minutes. He was saying his car was not driveable earlier on, and he's safely in the pits but out of the race he won 12 months ago.

The crucial thing for Lewis Hamilton is Max Verstappen is not going to disappear because Verstappen has now lost the lead.

Everyone is bunched up behind Daniel Ricciardo so Hamilton will be in the mix come the end of the grand prix.

  9. Postpublished at Lap 4/53

We feared Max Verstappen would disappear into the distance and this would be a dull one. Lewis Hamilton even said it would be an easy win for his title rival.

But what a start we've had. We've got a race on.

Daniel Ricciardo has had a lot of criticism this year, a lot of which seemed very harsh, but has a great chance to silence any critics today.

He leads at the fourth lap mark, with Max Verstappen hunting him down.

Antonio Giovinazzi, driving for his F1 future, had impressed all weekend and was seventh but that first lap spin, he may have been touched, has meant he's had to have a very early pit stop and all that hard work over the weekend is ruined.

He's 19th and last of those running, with Yuki Tsunoda unable to start. Pierre Gasly began from the pits and has benefitted from that Giovinazzi pit stop.

What a dramatic start! Hamilton got a good enough start on the hard tyres and got the run, not only on Lando Norris, but also on Max Verstappen.
