  1. 'This puts a whole new dynamic on it' - Hornerpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Monaco does not need to be any more stressful. This puts a whole new dynamic on the race. Is it inters or extremes [tyres]? Let's have a look. It should be a shower, it could come and go, a bit hit and miss. The worst kind of conditions you want for a race."

McLaren's Lando Norris speaking to Sky Sports: "I think if I can stay in P5 I'll be happy - you never know what's going to happen and the weather looks like it might play a part again. We're just going to keep our head's down which is what we did last year and hopefully that will work for us again.

"I'm not feeling 100% but good enough to go and do a good job."

  7. 'Rain is not very nice for a driver - it is complex' - Prostpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Four-time F1 champion Alain Prost speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Rain is exciting if you are on the outside looking in, but if you are a driver or part of a team it is not very nice.

"It is always more complicated. I remember this situation when I was racing in 1983. We had this kind of cloud and you didn't know if you had to start with wet tyres.

"We have this situation now and it is very complex."

  9. At some point Leclerc's bad luck at Monaco will endpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 Live

Charles Leclerc has generally just been unlucky [at the Monaco Grand Prix]. He is actually really quick here, that's the thing, and he has shown so much potential.

He had pole last year in the Ferrari that wasn't even a great Ferrari last year and he didn't actually manage to start there [in pole].

So it's just bad luck. At some point that bad luck will end, the stats of all the failures will end and we will move on. This could be his time.

  10. Oops. Sorrypublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Maybe, just maybe, Charles Leclerc has already banished his Monaco bad luck early this year.

He's already had his head in his hands after a brakes failure saw him bash up a classic 1974 Ferrari driven by three-time world champion Niki Lauda during the Monaco Historic event a fews ago.

Get it out of your system, Charles.

This is how Charles Leclerc's Monaco dream started to unravel in 2021, despite the Monegasque driver putting his car on pole position.

Leclerc was not able to start the race last year due to an issue with the left driveshaft, which Ferrari said was impossible to fix in time.

  14. Grey clouds are buildingpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

Grey clouds have been building over Monaco and there remains the possibility of rain during the race, even though the teams’ weather forecasts say the likelihood has decreased since Saturday.

Strategy in Monaco is nearly always a one-stop, but which tyres will teams choose? The likelihood is that most will go medium at the start. The soft is considered too fragile to guarantee the first stint going deep into the race, which teams want to ensure they are less vulnerable to a safety - if someone stops early before one, and others don’t, the ones who stay out gain massively, and with overtaking so difficult, recovering ground is almost impossible.

Some, though, will gamble on the hard at the start. You risk losing a position at the start, but you can run very long into the race - perhaps even right to the end - before making the mandatory stop for a second tyre type. Remember Alex Albon use this plan to great effect to take a point in Melbourne. Could Max Verstappen, stuck behind both Ferraris, gamble on this?

For Ferrari, will they use Carlos Sainz as a blocker to give Charles Leclerc the chance to build a lead and guarantee the win?

Pit-stop time loss is low at 19-20 seconds; just over half that under a safety car, the chance of which is statistically high.

It is going to be a slog for Lewis Hamilton. He is going to need something incredible to happen. It does seem that, around here, the car is not coming together. It's bumpy and bouncy. You know how good he is and yet he just cannot put together a lap in the Mercedes.

  17. 'The car is hard to drive here'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton speaking to Sky Sports:

"We've been waiting for some clouds all week so I'm hoping for something exciting today - a dry start and wet race would be good.

"We've been trying different things and different things with each car in different races to get the information we need, trying different tyres and all sorts but it's been a challenging weekend - the car is hard to drive here.

"The risk factor has been high but that's what we need to do to get as close as we can. But even when we take risks we are still six tenths off the pace so we still have a lot to do."

  18. Tricky start for Hamiltonpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Lewis Hamilton is a three-time Monaco Grand Prix winner but the Mercedes man will have to hope the stars align to be able claim a fourth victory that would move him level with Alain Prost.

The seven-time world champion has a job on his hands to try and lift himself from eighth on the grid.

Hamilton, along with Sebastian Vettel in ninth and Esteban Ocon in 10th, had all not yet run new tyres until the final run of qualifying, and all lost out as a result.

George Russell continues to impress in the Mercedes. He lines up sixth, two places ahead of Lewis Hamilton, despite admitting colliding with the wall in final qualifying.

“On my quickest lap, and I'll try and post a video tonight [Saturday], I actually hit the wall on the left after the tunnel,” said Russell. “Which is impressive to see, I have a steering lock the same rate, and you sort of see the wishbone sort of bend in, and somehow I just managed to keep it together.

“I managed to finish the lap and it all seemed in one piece. We'll probably have to check the toes and see. It’s all about playing with fire when you have a wall brush and get away with it. You're like, ‘Wow, I don't really know how we managed that.’”

After the step forwards in Spain, the car has not gone so well in Monaco, running stuff suspension and suffering on the bumps. "We've really struggled with compliance of the car, it has been really stiff this weekend.”

  20. 'One of my strongest laps' - Russellpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

The Mercedes of George Russell has Lando Norris' McLaren just ahead of him as the five lights go out this afternoon.

Russell secured another third-placed podium finish in Barcelona last weekend but the 24-year-old was hoping for a slightly better Q3 result yesterday.

"If you had told me P6 before the weekend, I wouldn't have been overly pleased," said Russell. "But I think my lap was really strong - probably one of the strongest laps I've done in qualifying all year."
