Sergio Perez won an incident-packed, wet-dry Monaco Grand Prix after his Red Bull team outfoxed rivals Ferrari.

The Mexican rose from third to the lead during a part of the race in wet conditions after the start was delayed for an hour after a downpour of rain.

Red Bull's strategy also vaulted Max Verstappen from fourth to third, behind Ferrari's Carlos Sainz but ahead of the Dutchman's title rival Charles Leclerc.

As a result, Verstappen extended his championship lead to nine points.

The gap Red Bull hold at the top of the constructors' championship is now 36 points thanks to Sergio Perez's victory and Max Verstappen's third place.

Ferrari are on 199 points, while Mercedes are still the third-best team on 134.

Mercedes' George Russell speaking to Sky Sports:

"There were a lot of positives from that race - we were fast in the first stint before the red flag so that was fun.

"It was tough - it was a bit frustrating in the car having the delays. It truly was undriveable conditions though to begin with then after the second red flag it was a lot dryer but one dry line is never easy on a track like this."

Let's hear from George Russell, who finished fifth - and had a decent little scrap with his mate Lando Norris - before we saying goodbye.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner speaking to Sky Sports: "We didn't want to be exposed at the restart so we thought the medium tyres would be enough. That lock up for Checo put him under pressure but he managed it beautifully and he's been on fire all weekend - very proud of him. I don't think we had the quickest car today but we got it right with the double pit stop too.

"Checo nailed his out-lap and Max [Verstappen] very nearly got him as well so a phenomenal team result."

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto speaking to Sky Sports: "Certainly disappointing result, I understand the disappointment of Charles [Leclerc]. He thinks something was wrong in the decisions we made - I think we underestimated the pace of the inters. We should have left him out longer maybe later on. Mistakes do happen but more importantly we need to understand why they happen. We will do it.

"As Ferrari we are disappointed - we believe there was a clear breach of regulation with the Red Bulls on the yellow line. Being on the line is breaching the race director notes and we are still seeking clarification from the FIA.

"It's not a relief [that Verstappen didn't win], we have lost constructor points today and that's more important. It's come down to mistakes we need to analyse. The slow lapped cars Alexander Albon and Nicholas Latifi cost them positions, it's a lot of situations that have not been in our favour. We made mistakes and I will take responsibility for that.

"Overall, it's been a difficult race."

That tiny block of green from lap 18 on Charles Leclerc's tyre data will be scrutinised by the Monegasque man all night long.

Second on the podium at Monaco in 2021 and a repeat again this year. Is that maiden Formula 1 victory just around the corner for Carlos Sainz?

The Spaniard is fifth in the drivers' standings, just one point behind fourth-placed George Russell.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc speaking to Sky Sports:

“Let down not is not the word, sometimes mistakes can happen – but there has been too many mistakes today and overall, and in these conditions you rely on what the team can see. I’ve been asked question whether wet to have slicks, and ‘yes’ but ‘not now later on’.

“I don’t understand what made us change our minds - we got undercut and then stuck behind Carlos [Sainz]. There were a lot of mistakes and we cannot afford to do that. I’m used to getting back home disappointed but we cannot do that, especially in a moment now where we are extremely strong. We need to take opportunities - we cannot lose points like this. I love my team. We will come back stronger, but it hurts a lot.

"The first one [radio message] was a clear decision and a very wrong one. From that moment onwards the mess started. I don't know if it was panic - I don't hear all the background stuff between the team so it's not up to me to judge.

"The last message I had was not clear because I was told to come in and then to stay out but I was already in the pit lane and that's when I let it out on the radio because I knew it was done."

So, it just wasn't meant to be for Charles Leclerc in the end. Here's what the home driver had to say...

Gary Donohoe: Everything you'd want in a pantomime or soap opera, but precious little racing. Fernando Alonso demonstrated how bad it's got now by driving like a bus with 10 cars queueing up behind. Maybe Alonso has now finally killed the Monaco GP.

Charles Leclerc looks crushed as he gives interviews in the media pen. I don't think we've heard the Ferrari man swear like that in anger of the radio.

The club tunes are being banged out in Monaco. Turn it down just a touch, please.

Charles Leclerc will be the one asking the questions, I think.

From pole position to not get a podium? It is really rare, and costly for a guy fighting for the championship. Leclerc is not at all happy.

Strategy is the order of the day. It is always a huge talking point at Monaco and Ferrari just did not call it right. Credit to Red Bull - they did.

Red Bull did a great job with Sergio Perez with the inters.

There were a couple of bits that worked out nicely for him. When Lando Norris pitted off the full wets it released Perez just before Carlos Sainz pitted for slicks and caught a back-marker.

It worked nicely for them, but Perez did the job and Leclerc could do nothing from fourth.

It took a long time for Sergio Perez to secure his maiden victory in Formula 1 - now he's got three.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen on his third-place finish: "I did the best I could after yesterday and I think as a team we did a really good job with the strategy to get ahead of the Ferraris.

"As a whole team we can be very happy with the Sunday.

"It was a hectic one with the rain but we executed it well and I extended my points lead, which I didn't expect last night so that is a positive.

"Luckily nothing crazy happened apart from Mick, but I hear he is OK.

"Excellent result for Checo - very happy for him."

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz who finished in second:

"I feel like we did everything right - we stayed patient on the wet we took the right decision to go on the slicks. I got stuck behind a lapped car and that cost me a win today so you can understand the frustration - a slow out-lap cost me today but it's how this sport is sometimes.

"I knew from halfway through the first stint I started to see the dry line and started to realise I was going straight into slicks. I think we made the right call, we pitted for the hard tyre and an out-lap is never easy on the hard tyre. That cost me the win but I won't complain too much about it. In this sport it will cost you.

"The entry to the tunnel was difficult to pass a couple of times I was close to launching a move into there but Checo was braking very late so I think I would've taken him with me."

Race winner, Red Bull's Sergio Perez, said: "It's a dream come true. As a driver you dream of winning here. After your home race there is no other more special weekend to win.

"We made it a bit harder for ourselves right at the end with the graining we had, but keeping Carlos [Sainz] behind was amazing.

"It's a massive day for myself and my country. I am very happy. I was wearing a Pedro Rodriguez helmet, I am sure he would be super proud of what we have achieved in the sport."
