There should be a point when the medium tyres are faster than the softs. Soon the softs should start to degrade, so Lewis Hamilton should be quicker than Max Verstappen. That is why they took the pain at the start and it has worked for Hamilton. At some point the Red Bulls should start to come back to the Mercedes.

Valtteri Bottas was a DNF in Austin but the Finn is trying to keep on the tail of Fernando Alonso, who is just ahead of the Alfa Romeo in seventh.

Lewis Hamilton banks the fastest lap of the race, which is bad news for Sergio Perez in third. The Mexican driver, backed by the passionate crowd, will have to wait this one out to get close to the seven-time world champion.

Max Verstappen is a second out in front ahead the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman is on used soft tyres, while Hamilton is running on a new set of mediums.

George Russell was slightly napping, Lewis Hamilton had the speed and was just committed to it. That move hampered Russell and Sergio Perez took advantage of that.

Fernando Alonso has also gained positions and has jumped from ninth up to seventh spot - the same position he finished the United States Grand Prix last weekend. Lance Stroll is up to 15th place after starting at the back of the grid.

George Russell had a decent start but was pinched on the inside of Turn Two. Lewis Hamilton was really good, I think he knew how crucial it was to stay ahead of Sergio Perez, I think he will be happy with that. He has kept Perez at bay despite starting on the medium tyres.

A chunk of kerb seem to throw George Russell off his stride in the opening exchanges. Valtteri Bottas, who started sixth, has dropped down the order to eighth.

Sergio Perez has taken George Russell's spot in third place and the crowd goes wild. Max Verstappen, on the softs, leads the Mexico City Grand Prix from Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes.

Mercedes' George Russell speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think we have got the car to win today over the course of 70 laps but it is going to be a very long run for us into Turn One. Max has been very quick on the straight so it is going to be very difficult for Lewis and I to get ahead but we will definitely be doing our utmost to achieve that."
