Red Bull's Max Verstappen broke the record for wins in a season with a comfortable and controlled victory in the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The world champion held off a challenge from Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes in the first part of the race before pulling away to take his 14th win of the year.

It moves the Dutchman clear of Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, who won 13 races in 2004 and 2013.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez took third ahead of Mercedes' George Russell.

  4. Alpine still ahead of McLarenpublished at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2022

In the constructors' championship, title winners Red Bull move onto 696 points, while second-placed Ferrari still hold a 40-point lead over Mercedes in third.

In the battle for fourth, Alpine just about have the upper hand over rivals McLaren, despite only Esteban Ocon scoring points in Mexico. The French team are seven points clear with two races to go.

As for the fight for sixth, Alfa Romeo have boxed that off for us...

  5. Perez and Hamilton gain placespublished at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2022

That record 14th season win for Max Verstappen moves the already world champion onto 416 points. Charles Leclerc's quiet race and Sergio Perez's podium finish means the Mexican has jumped back above the Ferrari man in the drivers' standings. Five points separate the pair now.

Lewis Hamilton's second place is given the Mercedes man a boost up the order and he now leads Carlos Sainz, who drops down to sixth, by four points.

  7. 'Mercedes are still missing that win'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2022

Ferrari remain the only team that have beaten Red Bull this year. Mercedes are still missing that win. They have had a few chances. Lewis Hamilton has had a very good second two thirds of the season. Again, he looked strong today, but not strong enough. Mercedes now have just two more chances to win.

  8. 'In front of this crowd, I really wanted more today'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2022

Red Bull's Mexican driver Sergio Perez on finishing third at his home grand prix: "I gave it my best today at the start. I really pushed hard. Unfortunately we had a bad stop which prevented us from undercutting Lewis [Hamilton]. Overtaking is so difficult, as soon as I got behind him it was so difficult to follow so I had to stay in third.

"I thought we were going to be a bit closer but unfortunately it didn't work out for us today but it is still a good podium. In front of this crowd I really wanted more today but third place is still a good day."

He finishes up talking to the crowd in Spanish. They seemed to like what he had to say.

  9. 'I'm not sure it was right tyre at end'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2022

Lewis Hamilton who finished second at the Mexico Grand Prix: "First of all this has been an amazing crowd and definitely a bit awkward this time round, boos all day. None the less I have so much love for Mexico and the people. What a great race and event put on this weekend.

"I was so close in that first stint Red bulls clearly too fast and also maybe had a better tyre strategy.

"Yeah I'm not sure it was right tyre at end. I thought we should’ve started on the softs but we had the opposite tyre. It was ok in the first stint but the hard tyre was the opposite.

"Congratulations to Max. It's great to be up here and separate the two.

  10. 'An incredible year'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2022

Race winner Max Verstappen speaking after his record 14th grand prix win of the season at the Mexican Grand Prix: "It helped me out a lot for the rest of the race, to stay in the lead on Turn One. Of course we were also on a different strategy to the cars around us but again an incredible result. The pace of the car was really nice. We had to look after our tyres because it was a very long stint on the medium but we made it work.

"It's an incredible atmosphere and we love to come here.

"It's been an incredible year so far. We are definitely enjoying it and will try to go for more."

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 Live

Red Bull are just so good as a team, putting everything together. And they have Max Verstappen - he is just phenomenal. He makes very few mistakes and is so hard to beat. To beat Verstappen this year, either Mercedes or Ferrari have to be perfect and get a bit of luck. Full credit to Verstappen, he is just on a roll.

The cool-down room is where the real action is. Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are watching the action being replayed on screen. Any decent insight for us? Nope. Not the chattiest room this weekend.

We've reached the podium now and the three drivers enter the arena below the stage, with Max Verstappen arriving sat on top of his winning car.

Bonnington: "Too right Lewis, it is getting closer, not far now."

Wolf: "I think we were very fast, in hindsight maybe not the right tyre choice but we keep pushing."

Sergio Perez takes a mega chug of water as the crowd in the stadium section cheer any little movement by the Mexican. Papa Perez is front-row centre, waving enthusiastically.

Not the warmest reception for Lewis Hamilton as he steps up for his interview. But the Mercedes man still compliments the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for having a great atmosphere.
