    It's quite light on upgrades across the paddock this weekend. Ferrari, like Haas, are looking to benefit from a floor update.

    According to the FIA document, when it comes to the Suderia, "particular attention has been put on losses reduction in all the updated areas, with the aim to improve the overall aerodynamic performance and car efficiency."

    No word from Haas yet as to whether Nico Hulkenberg's car will be ready for the start of second practice. The American team have brought an upgraded floor to this weekend's round five race in south Florida.

    Mercedes made a late surge in the dying moments of first practice and ended up topping the timesheets, with George Russell sitting in first spot ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in second.

    There was a red flag during the session when Haas' Nico Hulkenberg crashed into the wall at Turn Three. Alpha Tauri's Nyck de Vries also saw his hour ended prematurely because of an accident.

    George Russell led Lewis Hamilton to a Mercedes one-two in first practice at the Miami Grand Prix with Red Bull's Max Verstappen down in fourth place.

    The Mercedes drivers benefited from runs late in the session to leap ahead of Verstappen, who was also pipped by Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.

    Russell beat Hamilton by 0.212 seconds and 0.424secs up on Verstappen.

    Red Bull's Sergio Perez, six points behind Verstappen in the championship, was down in 11th place.

    Nico Hulkenberg caused a red-flag period when he crashed at Turn Three in his Haas. Alpha Tauri's Nyck de Vries also had an accident early on that terminated his session.

    Lewis Hamilton brings the other Mercedes home in second, the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc is third, world champion Max Verstappen finishes fourth and Leclerc's Scuderia team-mate Carlos Sainz completes the top five.

    Yuki Tsunoda at the end of the session was absolutely furious with one of the Alpines. Nice long bleeps added to his radio message.

    The hard work by the Mercedes crew has paid off for George Russell and he tops first practice in Miami with a 1:30.125 on a set of soft tyres.

    That's a remarkable turnaround for a guy who needed a steering rack change at the start of this session.

    A late dart from Lewis Hamilton sees the Mercedes leapfrog up the order and go quickest on a set of softs with a 1:30.337.

    But wait, is that the other Mercedes? It is. And George Russell puts in a fast lap on the red rubber and jumps two tenths above his team-mate.

    The track is packed, though, and Russell has to swerve to avoid the traffic. "Oh my word. I'm trying to get out of the way of everyone," he says on the team radio.

    Three minutes on the clock and after a slight bump over the kerb, Charles Leclerc is back in second place, two tenths behind Max Verstappen in first spot. on C4 soft rubber.

    Nico Hulkenberg, despite that crash earlier, is still in the top five with his time of 1:31.392 on a set of softs.

    Charles Leclerc's Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz is yet to join the celebrations on the podium this campaign. The Spaniard, who is fifth in the drivers' standings, pushes Leclerc down the pecking order and slots into that second spot with a 1:30.993.

    Our polesitter in both the sprint and the main race in Azerbaijan is another soft runner. Charles Leclerc is looking for back-to-back podium finishes for the first time this season and goes second quickest behind Max Verstappen with a 1:31.072.

    While most drivers are testing out the C4 soft tyres, the other Haas of Kevin Magnussen resumes on the medium rubber he began the session on to finish the rest of his run plan.

    Max Verstappen has got someone on his tail during this lap: it's Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes.

    While Hamilton is quietly going through his run plan, Verstappen is putting in purple sectors on a set of soft tyres. By the end of the lap, the Dutchman can improve on his previous top marker and puts down a new challenge to the rest of the field with a 1:30.549.
