So sorry, Kevin Magnussen. I wrongly identified you as the crasher when actually, it's your Haas mate Nico Hulkenberg who has caused the mechanics a headache this session.

It's coming through Turn Three. The car gets wide and it lets go. It looks really slippy.

The rear of the Haas drifted out as Nico Hulkenberg exited Turn Two and the German could not stop his imminent impact with the barriers a few moments later.

"I lost it," said Hulkenberg on the team radio.

Some soft tyres have been tagged in now and Nico Hulkenberg, who was wearing a pair of excellent palm tree print trousers on Thursday, goes fastest with a 1:31.392. His Haas team-mate Kevin Magnussen and reigning world champion Max Verstappen are also on the soft rubber.

Esteban Ocon is told by his Alpine team to think about the ride and balance for the next runs as he heads back to the garage for a debrief.

Ocon and his team-mate Pierre Gasly have been having a bit of Nascar fun this week, taking on the challenged of a quickest pit stop. The French duo managed to change the tyre in about nine seconds. Stick to the day job, fellas.

Oscar Piastri has reached the underpass section of the circuit with the Miami traffic above his head. The McLaren driver can't quite time his run through the corners correctly and needs to cut across the run-off area to bail himself out of the miscalculation.

Alex Albon is doing the Miami Dolphins proud, as the Williams man makes a solid catch to avoid bashing the side of his car into the wall after a slide on the slippery tarmac. Albon is in seventh spot on the time sheets on a set of hard tyres.

With the popularity of Netflix's 'Drive to Survive' in the United States, fans from across the pond have got a home driver to cheer for this weekend.

And not just any old American racer, an actual Floridian.

Logan Sargeant, who is in his rookie F1 season with Williams, was born just down the way in Fort Lauderdale and will be trying to score his first points of the season on his neighbouring city's turf.

Russell is in deep conversation with the engineers at Mercedes. I wouldn't say it's frantic at Mercedes but it's certainly busy. They're trying to make something out of this practice session for George Russell.

De Vries just coaxing it in to the 180 degree right-hander and the rear just lets go. Another example of the lack of grip out there.

Nyck de Vries, who retired from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend, has had a spin already in his Alpha Tauri and has been noted by the stewards for dangerous driving, possibly relating to how the Dutchman rejoined the track.

Sounds like an installation issue at Mercedes. When you're sitting in the car, you're immediately feeling the grip and want to get a feeling for that. Russell's obviously not happy. He's saying it's pointless being out there and he can't learn anything.

  19. Postpublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

George Russell is back in the Mercedes garage and out of the car. The crew are on the scene with rapid speed to try and diagnose the issue the 25-year-old was experiencing out on track.

Will we see Russell again in this first practice session? Still 49 minutes on the clock for the Silver Arrows to make some set-up changes.

Red Bull are running a competition this year to give fans the chance at designing the RB19's livery for the three races taking place in the United States.

First one up is Miami and graphic design student Martina Andriano's entry was chosen as the winning livery.

The two other grands prix in Austin and Las Vegas will also be given a Red Bull fan makeover.

At the top of the leaderboard, Max Verstappen is quickest with a 1:34.054 on the hard tyres.
