George Russell said Mercedes need to figure out why second practice was such a disappointment for the team.

"Definitely not our finest Friday. Conditions will be different tomorrow. We need to try to get to the bottom of it," said Russell.

"The pace in first practice was looking quite good on the medium tyre. We thought we were right up there, if we took the soft.

"But in P2 we were nowhere and we just need to try and understand that.

"We see a small trend that when the temperature is hotter we seem to take a bit of a step backwards, we have some ideas why that is."

  7. 'Tough car to drive' - Hamiltonpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 8 July 2023

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called the Austrian Grand Prix a "bruising day" for the team and said the car lacked pace around the Red Bull Ring.

So, with a new front wing and the roar of the Silverstone crowd, could the W14 perform better on home soil?

"It's a tough car to drive and no matter what we do to set it up, it remains a tough car to drive," said Lewis Hamilton after Friday's two practice sessions.

The seven-time champion said even a switch to the faster soft tyres didn't improve the car's performance.

"That shows that's something's wrong," Hamilton said. "We're missing something. And on the long run it didn't seem too bad, so that's a positive at least.

"George is over here with the set-up and I'm over here. He was saying I was thinking of coming over to where you are but your lap time is slow. And I was like I was thinking of coming to where you are.

"We will work on it tonight and hopefully we will come up with something for tomorrow."

Temperatures at Silverstone on Friday, when 120,000 spectators attended the track, were in the high 20Cs but are expected to drop a little for the weekend, when rain also threatens.

Max Verstappen looked imperious, despite his small margin over Sainz, and his long run on a race fuel load was especially impressive.

The Dutchman's race-simulation run was more than 0.5secs a lap on average quicker on the same soft tyre than team-mate Sergio Perez, with Sainz a little further behind.

Sergio Perez had to make way at the top of the timesheets in second practice as the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz challenged Max Verstappen for the quickest time.

World champion Verstappen pipped Spaniard Sainz - who won the British Grand Prix last year - by just 0.022 seconds.

Alex Albon proved his first practice result wasn't a fluke by placing his Williams in third spot once again, while team-mate Logan Sargeant was high up the leaderboard in fifth.

Red Bull's Perez ended the session in fourth but Charles Leclerc failed to get out of the garage after an electrical issue with his Ferrari.

Mercedes had a difficult day, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton down in 12th and 15th despite a new front wing.

A number of the drivers said that they were struggling for grip on Friday, especially in the first session, as they tried a new, more robust Pirelli tyre construction for the first time.

Pirelli have introduced the tyre to lessen the risk of failures at high-speed tracks such as Silverstone. But the despite what the company says is a stronger construction, the teams were told to run the tyres at unusually high pressures - 26.5psi at the front and 23psi at the rear.

This compares with 23 and 20psi at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend and 24 and 20psi at the Spanish Grand Prix last month.

The combination of Max Verstappen first and Sergio Perez second was how first practice ended on Friday, as the two Red Bull drivers clocked the quickest times in a quiet opening session.

Alex Albon put his Williams a surprise third fastest and was 0.253 seconds away from Verstappen's top marker, while Fernando Alonso and his Aston Martin finished fourth and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fifth.

Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell ended the hour outside the top 10 but neither Mercedes driver completed a lap on the soft C3 tyres.

The sun has been shining on Silverstone and fans have been lapping up the good weather over the past two days.

But on a Saturday qualifying in Formula 1, the rain will find a way to inject some drama into proceedings, so flip flops and suncream may need to be replaced with jackets and umbrellas for the fight for pole today.

Keep dry and try to pick the right tyres...
