Max Verstappen cruised to victory in the British Grand Prix for his sixth win in a row and a record-equalling 11th consecutive triumph for Red Bull.

McLaren's Lando Norris fought off an attack from Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes after a late safety car to finish second to give the 160,000 fans a double home podium to cheer.

Verstappen's eighth win in 10 races this year brought Red Bull level with the record McLaren established in their historic 1988 season with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

Oscar Piastri made it a great day for McLaren with fourth ahead of George Russell's Mercedes.

  3. 'We are lacking straight line speed' - Wolffpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Mercedes had two cars finish inside the top five and team chief Toto Wolff spoke to Sky Sports after the race: "I think at the end on the softs we would have been able to pull away at the beginning, but we are lacking straight line speed at the moment, here at Silverstone particularly. It was close, we have performed well compared to qualifying it was a solid day.

On McLaren getting second: "The tyres went off but today they had the better car, to honestly say, to hold off us with the hard tyre and straight line speed. Will be very interesting to see on the more twisty circuits who is the best, but they made a big step ahead and good to see this is possible. We have to go for them - we have to go for the Red Bulls."

The fans are singing Oscar Piastri's name. The Australian tells Sky Sports the result stings a little when it could've been a podium but he praises the work McLaren have done over the last few races.

McLaren boss Zak Brown spoke to Sky Sport’s after an impressive result for the team. He said: “Today was a good day at the office, Oscar and Lando drove great, team was strong, pitstops were good, tyre strategy turned out to be the right one. That was a bit of a nail biter.

“Giving how we started the year, to be on the podium, lead the race, and be there on pure pace, have two cars there it's unfortunate for Oscar, he deserved to be third, what an incredible work all the men and women at McLaren have done."

On after the safety car, he added: “I’m still nervous and the race is over. Lewis Hamilton, the nice thing is you know he's going to fight you hard but fight you fair so at least you feel like you've got a driver around you that's going to be sensible. We knew with the hards if we could get past the first couple of laps with DRS we never felt like we were home free so that was a big moment. And then Oscar was coming a few more laps, maybe in a few more laps he would have been harassing Lewis."

On the competition up and down the paddock, he added: " I think you know Max is getting less further ahead in these last couple of races, I think it shows how heathy the sport is and how great the competition is and you are coming in every weekend and there's someone at the front you weren't expecting and someone at the back you weren't expecting, so if we get hold of Max the racing will be fantastic."

  7. 'A very happy surprise' - Piastripublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri just missed out on the podium after finishing in fourth, he told Sky Sports: "We achieved these results on merit. We were generally the second quickest team today which was a very happy surprise.

"On my side we were unlucky with the safety car timing with Lewis but it is nice in some ways to be disappointed with fourth considering where we were at the start of the year.

"Massive credit to the team - the updates we brought to the car are working a treat - exciting times for the future and nice to be back up the front. Having so many points for the team is a fantastic result."

Lewis Hamilton who finished third at the British Grand Prix: "Firstly I didn’t do it the crowd did it. Once again Silverstone put on a great show. We've got the greatest crowd here. Thank you to every one supporting. I felt the energy, felt the support and it's also the reason we got back up there.

"Big congratulations to Lando, to McLaren. That's my family, where I first started. To see them back up there looking so strong. That thing was so rapid around the corner. I couldn't keep up. We had a good battle on the restart. The start wasn’t so great for me the long run on the medium was good.

"We're not that far away, we've just to keep pushing. We can catch those guys at the front.

On his battle with Lando: "Once he goes through turns 13 and 14 he's gone. We had good performance and lot of speed, we had a good battle. But I'm really happy to come third. Big thank you to my team Great pit stops, great weekend. I love this crowd.

"It continues to be an honour to race and represent you all. We’ll continue to push. Thank you so much for the support. I hope you had a great day today"

  12. 'Pretty insane' - Norrispublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

McLaren driver Lando Norris gets his first podium at Silverstone after finishing second. He said after the race:

"Pretty insane - big thanks to the whole team they did an amazing job. None of this would be possible without the hard work they put in. They put me on hard tyres, I don't know why - they are still ambiguous on some things.

"Was an amazing fight with Lewis to hold him off, I made too many mistakes maybe. I brought the fight to Max for as long as possible. It is a long lonely race when you are in the middle but it is amazing."

On calling for the soft tyres: I think they just wanted to give me a bit more of a test, that is what Zak said anyway - he called the shots on that one. I wanted the softs, I felt that it made a bit more sense especially with the safety car coming out - but I don't care I am P2 so all good."

On his first podium at the British GP: "Big thanks to the British fans out here and for McLaren, honestly we should have had P2 and P3 - Oscar did an amazing job all weekend. He should have been P3 without the safety car - it is a shame as he deserved it, but the fans are amazing so a big thanks to them"

  13. Red Bull wins 'pretty incredible'- Verstappenpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen earns his sixth successive win this season and his second at the British Grand Prix. He said post-race: “We had a terrible start so we need to look into why that was but after that Lando, both the McLaren’s were super quick, it took a few laps to pass them, and then at one point I could ease out a gap and then everything look quite alright again. But after the safety car, on the softest compound around here was a little more tricky for us to keep them alive, so the gap basically stayed around three, three and a half seconds.

“Of course very happy that we’ve won again and I mean eleven wins in a row for the team I think that’s pretty incredible but it wasn’t as straight forward today.”

He reflected on the start, adding: “I was doing a bit of drifting on Thursday and it felt like I was doing it at the start which wasn’t very good, it was just very bad so we will look into that because I think the last few starts were actually a lot better and today wasn’t that great.

"But it makes it a bit more exciting and to push for it and Lando didn’t really put up a fight, he was very nice to me but he then actually came back in the DRS and he had a lot of pace today. He did very well today.”
