Lap 45/52
The McLaren of Lando Norris is keeping Lewis Hamilton quiet and holding on to the runners-up spot. Pierre Gasly is the next driver to try his luck on a Ferrari but this time, Carlos Sainz's hard tyres keep him in the game and 10th place.
Pierre Gasly has a problem...

Ten laps can Lewis Hamilton find a way past Lando Norris, I think for Norris now, Lewis has spent the last four laps really on the back of his gear box and has been pushing really hard in all traction zones and all high-speed corners to try and get close, has that taken that little bit of bite out of those soft tyres.
Lap 44/52
Carlos Sainz is under pressure from the Red Bull of Sergio Perez. The Spaniard is caught and loses seventh place.
Here comes the Williams of Alex Albon. Is he going to pick off Sainz too? Yes he is! Albon is in eighth.
Oh no. Not another one. Team-mate Charles Leclerc adds the final blow and Sainz now finds himself in 10th spot.

Norris on the hard compound, Hamilton on the softs but Norris is doing everything he can - how good would it be to see two Brits on the podium!
That McLaren is holding out hope for second.

Lewis Hamilton is putting Lando Norris under all sorts of pressure, it's great to see two British guys out here fighting for second and third.
Lap 43/52
Will it be Lando Norris finishing second or the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton?
The stewards have made their decision on the Stroll-Gasly incident and have decided the Aston Martin didn't gain an advantage by going off the track. Carry on.
Lap 42/52
Max Verstappen is already three seconds ahead of Lando Norris but the two-time world champion doesn't like these soft tyres that were fitted under the safety car.
Sam Bird
Formula E driver on BBC Radio 5 Live
The grip advantage on the soft tyre is absolutely crazy, Lewis is able to take tighter radiuses and carry higher minimum speeds through the corners, however Lando has hung on in what was a really critical phase of that re-start.
Lap 41/52
George Russell is chasing the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri but the Briton is on the radio to say those papaya cars are quick.
Pierre Gasly is fuming with Lance Stroll. The Alpine driver thinks the Canadian gained his 11th place in a naughty way and the stewards are going to take a look at that one.
Russell: That McLaren is so quick on the hard's - it is impressive.
Lap 40/52
The helicopter camera is following this battle every step of the way. Lando Norris can see the Mercedes beating down his door but the McLaren keeps calm and holds on to that second place podium finish.
Lap 39/52
Lando Norris is defending like a champion to try and keep Lewis Hamilton at bay while he gets his hard tyres up to temperature. Oscar Piastri stays in fourth and George Russell is in fifth.

Jenson: Go Lando go!!
Sho: McLaren have really messed this up
Chris: McLaren’s debrief will be interesting
Lap 39/52
Green flag. Lap 39 now and Max Verstappen leads the field as Lando Norris tries to swat away the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton! The pair are tussling at Luffield but the McLaren stays ahead.

What we effectively have now is a 14 lap sprint race.
Lap 38/52
Are we going to see two British drivers on the podium this afternoon? Which way round will they be though?
Sam Bird
Formula E driver on BBC Radio 5 Live
The one saving grace for Lando Norris is I don't think that Mercedes is very good in a straight line.
Lap 38/52
Below the top five is Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc.
Safety car coming in at the end of this lap...
Engineer: Car ahead is Piastri ahead of him is Lewis.
Russell: Has Lewis boxed?
Engineer: Yes, he stayed out but he did just box.
Russell: Ahhh **** alright.
