  1. 'Car was a rocket ship' - Piastripublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Oscar Piastri might have to turn his phone off and ignore the Ashes at Headingley today, as the Australian driver has bigger fish to fry starting third at his first Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old said his chrome McLaren was a "rocket ship" in Q2 and Q3 and called his P3 and team-mate Lando Norris' P2 a "mega result" for the team.

"Y3S Y3S Y3S!!!" he tweeted along with this picture on Saturday.

Piastri's best result this season was his eight-placed finish at his home race in Melbourne in April.

McLaren's step forward comes after a major reshuffle in the team following a difficult winter.

Team principal Andrea Stella admitted before the car had even run this year that McLaren had missed their development targets and that they expected to improve later in the season once performance they found too late was brought to the car. These latest upgrades are what he was referring to.

"We are on a journey," Stella said. "The most important thing is understanding the direction, understanding what you need on this journey.

"This is true in terms of reorganising the team, in terms of technical direction on the car. Just put the things you need in line and results will come as a consequence.

"It's a good day for McLaren but my thoughts are like: let's understand this result, what do we need to do extra, can we confirm the development plan, everyone head down on the development plan."

The poor winter led to technical director James Key leaving the team and a restructure of McLaren's design department. And Stella singled out aerodynamics lead Peter Prodromou, brought back into front-line design after years on the side projects, for praise.

Lando was hit with back slap and a "nice dude" from Zak Brown after qualifying but the McLaren chief had even more reason to celebrate when rookie Oscar Piastri put himself on the second row in third place.

It was thrilling end to an exciting qualifying at Silverstone and Max Verstappen's pole time was just 0.241 seconds quicker than Norris in the dying moments of the session.

Charles Leclerc will line up in fourth alongside Piastri and Carlos Sainz and George Russell will start side by side after qualifying in fifth and sixth respectively.

Eight-time British Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton will take his place seventh for today's race.

There are no after-hours penalties to change the order of the front of the grid this weekend.

However, Valtteri Bottas has been moved from his P15 spot as he was disqualified after the session for not being able to provide the FIA with a fuel sample from his Alfa Romeo.

Lando Norris was moments away from claiming his first British Grand Prix pole position on Saturday but had to settle for second place on the grid after Max Verstappen pipped him to the front-row spot in the Red Bull.

The roar from the huge Silverstone crowd was deafening when Norris crossed the line to take provisional pole, so what will the scenes be like if the 23-year-old turns this Saturday chequered flag photograph into a Sunday home victory?

It's a big ask, but the 2023 season is due a topsy-turvy race result...
