Welcome to Amen Corner, which begins with the second shot to this long par four. The green is guarded by a pond on the left and a bunker to the right. Be happy to come away with par from the scene of Larry Mize's chip in to defeat Greg Norman in the 1987 play-off.

What's more, he's about to head to Amen Corner (coverage of which can soon be found at the top of this page). The start of that three-part test, is the par-four 11th.

    300.75: Adam Scott (-3)

Ian Poulter,, external who is about to tee off: "Struck it pure today. Hit some great golf shots today. Only mistakes were 4, 3 putts which left me with a sour taste. Good weekend ahead."

Cameraman Mark Bowden tells a great story of when a ball from the next door Augusta Country Club flew onto the green when Tiger Woods was putting in 1997.

Tiger knows Mark, and looked up and opened his arms as if to say, "What the heck...?". Mark just pointed to the fence.

He also helped Greg Norman try to find his ball buried deep in the azaleas back in the late 1990s. "They were much thicker then. He had to play another, but we found it later."

Oh Miguel, you old tease. Always got something for us, haven't you? Birdies at the third and fifth have got the veteran Spaniard down to one over. I presume he's not allowed to smoke his cigar on the course at Augusta?

Gary Woodland, the big mover of the day so far, has parred the third and fourth holes after that eagle at the second got him down to level par. Rory McIlroy, still out at five over, is about to reach the turn.

Could this year's Masters be won by one of a record six over 50s to make the cut? Five of the six are past champions and 1992 winner Fred Couples (-2) is within touching distance of leader Bubba Watson.

Also part of the record-breaking crew are 1987 champion Larry Mize (+2), 1988 champion Sandy Lyle (+4), 1993 winner Bernhard Langer (+2), 2000 victor Vijay Singh (+2) and evergreen Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez (+3).

Just watching On The Range at the top of the live text page, where Matt Kuchar is working on his short game with a few chip shots. Augusta is bathed in sunshine, but I'm struck by how many different shades of green there are out there. Yes there's the fairway, putting surface and leaves on the trees, but also the pins, flags, the caps of the caddies and attendants and the roof of a white building in the distance.

BBC Sport's Ken Brown kicks off with an introduction from Amen Corner for his "on the course" piece for the TV coverage and points out landmarks on a map he has lovingly prepared earlier.

Then we cross the Hogan Bridge to meet an old friend of Kenny's, CBS cameraman Mark Bowden, who has worked the TV camera behind the 12th green for 22 years. For three years before that he was on the 15th.

Ken climbs the tower for a chat and Mark explains how tough it is to follow the ball. "It's trying to pick it up out of the grandstand, there are so many colours," says Mark. "And then if the sky is white, like yesterday, it's tough to track."

Mark shows how when the ball plunges to the green he has to pan the camera down really quickly to see it land. "It's really abrupt, but you have to be smooth." He adds: "It's not just the players, we all feel the pressure, even though we have been doing it for ever."

Australian Oliver Goss,, external celebrating his 20th birthday as the only amateur left in the field: "Happy birthday to me, I turn 20 today and play the weekend of The Masters, happy birthday to me! Amazing feeling to know I'm playing the weekend, every golfers dream, feel very privileged!"

Leader Bubba Watson,, external despite streaking clear at one point, was just happy to make the cut after the disappointment of last year when, as defending champion, he missed the weekend: "It's been a fun 2 days at The Masters! Cool to birdie 5 in a row on the back 9 today!! #MadeCut"

Graeme McDowell,, external one of the leading players in the world over the past few seasons though a casualty of the cut, has yet to master Augusta's greens: "To my real fans. Thanks for your support this week. Means a huge amount to me. Augusta is a work in progress for me. Need to putt better."

Short, but treacherous. Bunkers on the left of the fairway lead to most players using an iron off the tee. The small, sloping green is not entirely visible from the approach.

Wowzers. Gary Woodland has sprinted off on this sunny Georgia morning. The American, who began the day three over, has followed his birdie at the first with an eagle three at the par-five second. He's level par, seven off the lead, and on his way to the third.

Been down on the 12th and 13th greens watching filming for Ken on the Course bits for BBC TV coverage later.

Mr B on top form but disappointed that the perfect, still morning might scupper his chances of bringing out his new toy to illustrate the intricacies of Amen Corner.

This most iconic of spots is already humming with patrons, happy to lap it all up hours before play reaches here. Birds sing, water trickles over the weir, the backdrop is sublime. Just like heaven. Greenstaff are busy with a long tape measure and the device known as the stimpmetre to check the speed of the 11th green. No filming allowed of that.

First, presenter Hazel Irvine, in her own green jacket, films links on the Hogan Bridge, pausing now and then to wait for light planes buzzing overhead.

A couple of discussions break out on the live text desk. The first is surrounding whether Matt Fitzpatrick should be on the range or not.

One hard-hearted soul says cut-missers should be booted out. "What about Tom Watson?" I ask. "Well, that's Tom Watson," is the reply.
