There's a little bit of early movement at the southern end of the leaderboard. Gary Woodland has birdied the first to get down to two over, while Jose Maria Olazabal has done the same to get to three over.

This is my first experience of On The Range, but I'm already loving it. English amateur Matt Fitzpatrick, who has missed the cut, is making the most of Augusta experience by having a Saturday-morning hit.

The man next to him? Tom Watson. If you're getting up early to hit some balls, there isn't really a better man to picking the brains of, is there?

    Par four, 445 yards

The first shot of the round will require players to hit more than 300 yards on a slight right dogleg if they are to clear a deep fairway bunker. The undulating green is crowned and difficult to hold.

Understandably, Rory McIlroy is flying around. He's already played four holes and is exactly where he began on four over after birdieing the second but bogeying the fourth. Also out on the course are Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke. Miguel Angel Jiminez and Sandy Lyle are just heading down the first.

"I was not really thinking about the birdies when I am out there," said 2012 champion Watson. "I am thinking about the shot at the time. Some of the fans were yelling, trying to get me mad, but I just kept my head down.

"I'm just trying to hit greens because that means your first shot has to be good as well. I scored better today, but hit the ball better yesterday which is a funny thing.

"It is easier this year than last. When you get here as defending champion it is all about you. Everybody wants to talk to you, the Champions Dinner is all about you and it distracts from what you are trying to do. This year is easier to focus on what you are trying to do."

And what about Watson, the man who produced the brilliant round of 68 to take control of the Masters?

It was solid stuff for Bubba until a bogey at the ninth, but he exploded into life at Amen Corner.

A birdie at the tricky par-three 12th was the first of five shots gained in as many holes, taking him to eight under at one point.

A poor approach and nervous putt cost him a shot on the last but, by that time, he had used the early start to his advantage and his lead did not come close to being challenged.

Speaking of McIlroy, the world number nine has birdied the second to get back to three over par.

It could have been a different weekend for the Northern Irishman, though. When he drew back his putter on the 18th, he had no idea that he would have been sent packing had his testing par putt missed.

"It was very frustrating," said the 24-year-old. "I just really couldn't get anything to go my way.

"Eleven shots back is going to be nearly impossible to make up."

Can either of Stephen Gallacher and Jamie Donaldson (both -1) create a UK charge? And what about Rory? Why is he yet to get it right at Augusta?

And that is where we shall begin. Bubba Watson peers out of his bedroom window on seven under par, three shots clear of next-door neighbour John Senden and a further one ahead of the house with "-3" on the front door - that's where Adam Scott and three others slept last night.

As for Rory, his lodgings were so far down the road that his walk to the end has already begun. The Northern Irishman is the first man out today, taking on the Augusta National alone. His morning walk has already taken in a par at the first.

Defending champion Adam Scott had to battle to stay where he was, while Rory McIlroy slipped so far back he was almost asked to leave the community by the local residents' association.

Others weren't so lucky. The likes of Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els and Graeme McDowell, have all been booted off Magnolia Lane and told not to come back for another year.

The 2012 champion's run of five consecutive birdies on the back nine was the equivalent of driving a tank down Magnolia Lane, building a moat around the best house and having a barbecue in the back garden.

While Bubba was storming the mansion, those that looked like strong challengers were slipping down the Lane and into a different post code.
