A second major title for Martin Kaymer after a dominant start-to-finish victory at Pinehurst. It was a supreme display and his final total of 271 was the second lowest in US Open history (three higher than Rory McIlroy's tally from three years ago).

And with that we shall bring this live text commentary to an end. Thanks, as always, for your contributions and hopefully we will see you in a few weeks for the start of the Open. Bye for now.

  2. A very, very nice week for Kaymerpublished at 01:00 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

"To play here at Pinehurst with the history and the crowds, it's always very special," says the US Open champion. "The way I played golf in the first two days was very good and fortunately I could bring it home. Overall, it was a very, very nice week for me and my main goal this year was the make the Ryder Cup team. I hope it's enough."

Martin Kaymer is sitting behind a well-presented table. There's table cloth, there's flowers but the centrepiece is the US Open Championship trophy. First, Kaymer receives the Jack Nicklaus medal, named after the four-time winner of this competition, before - eventually - he gets his hands on the silverware.

  4. Compton enjoys his special momentpublished at 00:53 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

A tearful Erik Compton says he will now not only be referred to as "the guy with two heart transplants" after he tied for second with Rickie Fowler.

"No-one was catching Kaymer this week," says the American. "I know my wife and daughter are at home and it's just a real special moment.

"I was playing for second, I think we all were playing for second. I didn't know I've got into the Masters so this is just a career-opening thing for me, for me to be able to put myself on the map and prove I'm not just a guy with two heart transplants."

Numbers have been crunched and I can tell you that Martin Kaymer becomes the fourth European winner of the US Open in the last five years after Graeme McDowell (NI) in 2010, Rory McIlroy (NI) in 2011 and Justin Rose (Eng) last year. The German also becomes the first winner from continental Europe.

"It was a great performance throughout the week in supremely difficult conditions. We have reflected on history and can only think of Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach in 2000 as a more dominant performance. This was a performance for the ages. He was just in control of his game throughout the week."

Kaymer ended the round with a one-under-par 69 but the damage had been done with two those 65s in round one and two. He wins the US Open with a nine under par score and few have taken command of a major in such a way.

Kaymer allows his putter to fall onto the green and raises his arms before removing his cap and embracing his caddie.

Rickie Fowler with a gargantuan putt for birdie and his effort comes to a halt an inch or two short. There will be no grand finale for the American.

  11. Kaymer on the 18th greenpublished at 00:37 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

A standing ovation for Martin Kaymer as he approaches the green and the German acknowledges the reception with a wave. Rickie Fowler is walking a few meters behind the leader, allowing him to soak up the adulation all for himself.

Martin Kaymer and Rickie Fowler exchange pleasantries as they walk down the fairway. A couple of more shots and the trophy will be his. A wedge onto the green from the German and he must now prepare for a hearty Pinehurst welcome.

Erik Compton with a 4ft putt to save par and the jam-packed grandstand hold their breath. They want their man to finish second.

The spectators roar and that's all you need to hear to know that Compton has sunk it! He punches the air and his compatriots cheer wildly. A gutsy display by the remarkable American who closes with a two-over-par 67 for a one under score.

  14. Fowler tied for secondpublished at 00:30 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Flawless short-play from Martin Kaymer as his putt for birdie lazily falls a few inches short of the cup. A bogey for Fowler on the par-three 17th and he returns to -1 for the tournament.

Rickie Fowler, on the 17th, is in the bunker again and he should have brought a bucket and spade with him. The youngster chips out of the sand, but his shoulders are slumped and he looks like he's had enough.

A birdie for Henrik Stenson on the 17th, which plasters over the bogey-filled cracks in the middle of his round. The Swede now +1 for the tournament.

In the last 20 years, only Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els and John Daly have won two majors before turning 30. Kaymer, at 29, will join the group.

And there's more. Since the world rankings began in 1986, only four players have won two majors - and were ranked number one in the world before hitting the big three-zero. They were Woods, McIlroy, Els and Seve Ballesteros. Kaymer, who held top spot in 2011, will also join this elite band of brothers.

  18. Bogey for Kaymer on the 16thpublished at 00:20 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Fowler holding firm in the sand and his ball rolls to within three feet of the hole and he could escape with a par. In fact, he does! Kaymer's intensity has dropped, his putt races away from the cup and that's a dropped shot on the 16th. The German returns to -9 for the tournament.

  19. Fowler in the sandpublished at 00:17 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

A swashbuckling Rickie Fowler punches his way out of the pines and into the bunker. Martin Kaymer opts for safety, a gentle shove and his putt falls short.

Rickie Fowler in the trees and apparently a quick-thinking father had to move his toddler away from incoming danger. Dusk falling in Pinehurst, but the truth is the lights went out for those who had hoped to challenge Kaymer's supremacy some time ago.
