  1. Fore!published at 00:08 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Rickie Fowler balloons his tee shot, hooking it to the left, and the ball ends up somewhere in Kentucky. A par for Erik Compton on the 16th and he's stopped the rot.

  2. History beckons for Kaymerpublished at 00:07 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Martin Kaymer holding a three wood on the 16th tee and the German, oozing confidence, finds the heart of the fairway. He is now within touching distance of history. Soon the 29-year-old will become the first German to win the US Open.

Henrik Stenson was bullish ahead of this final round, but any hopes he had of a challenge ended as early as the fourth hole, when he needed five shots on the par four. Three more bogeys have since followed and the Swede, who had been impeccable on the greens over three rounds, is +1 for the tournament.

  4. It's raining bogeyspublished at 23:58 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

If you were rooting for Erik Compton and hoping that he would at least finish second then it's probably best you look away now. The underdog leaves the 15th with a bogey and is now third on -1 overall.

Successive bogeys for Dustin Johnson, on the 15th and 16th, means he's level for the tournament and +2 for the round.

"If we were to talk about absolute, all-time great performances, I would put this in there now.

"Woods won by 15 shots at Pebble Beach in 2000. That is the all-time mark I don't think will ever be beaten, but this, given the course, is a close second."

  8. Game over?published at 23:53 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

And that must be that. Back-to-back birdies for Martin Kaymer as he sinks his putt on the 14th and the leader visibly relaxes. The shoulders loosen, the face muscles soften and it's as if just returned from a day in the spa. Kaymer on -10 for the tournament with four holes remaining.

Keegan Bradley is back in the clubhouse with a three-under-par 67 and only one man - Daniel Berger - has posted a better fourth-round score today. The American finished +1 for the tournament, as did Aussie Jason Day after a two-under-par 68.

  10. Fowler bouncing backpublished at 23:47 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

It feels like Rickie Fowler has been finding every bunker on the course. The young American, back to -2 for the tournament, whacks it onto the 14th green, but the ball trickles off the edge and he will have to work hard to record a third successive birdie.

  11. McIlroy happy that it's game overpublished at 23:44 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Rory McIlroy reacts to his 73, which leaves him six over for the tournament: "I think I probably played a little better today than yesterday but a little relieved it's all over.

"It's been a struggle this week. The course played progressively harder as the week went on and I just wasn't able to control my ball and make birdie chances. I'll have to wait another year but going into the Irish Open next week still playing pretty well."

BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Pinehurst

"Take Kaymer out and we have a cracking US Open finish here. Erik Compton two under, Dustin Johnson two under, Rickie Fowler two under, all chasing second."

  14. Seven-shot lead for Kaymerpublished at 23:39 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Deadeye accuracy from Martin Kaymer as he lasers in a birdie putt on the par-four 13th. The German leaves the green twirling his putter like a cheerleader as he returns to -9.

    Iain Carter
    BBC golf correspondent at Pinehurst

"So frequently, I think people who set up golf courses are scared theirs will be the first to yield a 62. What's wrong with someone who does that? In other sports, you wouldn't design a slow track for Usain Bolt to run on.

"I think they get so scared and they tuck away the pins. It makes for attritional golf and it takes away some of the flamboyant golf."

  16. Kaymer in the bunkerpublished at 23:34 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Martin Kaymer on the 13th tee and he finds a trap to the right of the fairway. The giant orb in the sky is dazzling the German's eyes, but maybe it's best he can't see the damage, although it could have been much worse.

  17. Postpublished at 23:31 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Erik Compton walks away from the 13th green but glances over his shoulder for one last look, as if to say "darn you". But he did well to negotiate the hole in four. He remains on -2.

  18. Postpublished at 23:27 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live summariser at Pinehurst

"When Kaymer went on a run back when he was world number one he won something like five in seven tournaments. He is hard to stop. Under the right weather conditions, I can see him winning the Open Championship, too. He wins tournaments in bunches.

"He could take Hoylake apart with precision iron play off the tee like Tiger Woods did."

  19. Eagle for Bradleypublished at 23:26 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Keegan Bradley climbs up the leaderboard thanks to an eagle on the par-four 13th. The seven-time Tour winner showing Compton how it should be done. Compton, in scrubland and on his second shot on the 13th, has to chip over a greenside bunker... The ball bounces onto the green, but he's left with a huge putt for birdie so he'll probably come away with a par.

  20. Postpublished at 23:21 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Talking of Eric Compton (and believe it or not we're not writing to a script) he gets the big stick out on the 13th but shanks it and when he finds his ball it will be in some 'native land'. The American battling for second spot now.
