    Horschel (+4 after 15)

Billy Horschel must have looked in the mirror before stepping out of his Augusta digs today...he's not wearing retina-burning coloured trousers. He's opted for the sensible cricket umpire look.

But rule-enforcing Augusta officials are still seething for his previous wardrobe malfunction - they must be, they're punishing him on the 15th.

His ball is whipped off the green by that golfing enemy Mr Gale Force Wind and he is forced to take a drop off the pristine putting surface. Bizarre bogey.

  2. Day birdies ninthpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

World number one to even par at turn

He looked gone after day one, Jason Day. And now? Five shots off the lead, 27 holes to play. Alive and kicking.

That's our Spieth/McIlroy portmanteau, if you've been elsewhere. Spieth on the par three fourth, and he's mangled that - way long, and the ball clatters off the grandstand and back into the aprons. McIlroy in that spray-on top of his - Lord alive, repeats the trick. Gasps from the patrons hiding under their seats/hands.

    Piercy (-1 after 4)

Rory is back in outright second. Not of his own volition, mind. Scott Piercy, who started in tied third on Moving Day, has moved...down the leaderboard. He's back in tied third again after not giving enough juice on a 14-foot uphiller on the fourth.

  9. McIlroy drops shotpublished at 20:37 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Back to -2

Yup. Spieth with his par, but McIlroy has a horrible 20-footer for par - no no, comes up short, and that's a first bogey of the day for the Northern Irishman. Spieth's lead up to three shots after three holes.

    Lowry (+4 after 6)

Shane Lowry looks like the sort of bloke who opens beer bottles with his teeth. And the grizzly Irishman might need a few bevvies later. Four holes, four bogeys. Not the 100% start he was dreaming about last night. Two pars have guided HMS Lowry into safer waters, but he needs to start gliding through Birdie Ocean.

    Spieth -5

Spieth 23 yards from the pin, just off the putting surface, and he'll chip with that jeweler's touch of his - mmm, to within three feet, should knock that in for par.

  13. It's in the trees - it's coming!published at 20:32 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

Spieth among the Georgia pines, a narrow arboreal corridor in front of him. Chips it out, makes the green and skids on, but he'll take that from there. McIlroy's own effort from the sand falls short, grips and bounces back. Hmm.

    Willett (+2 after 5), Poulter (+12 after 16), Fitzpatrick (+4 after 15), Rose (+4 after 14)

Not been a great day for Englishmen. Apart from Andy Carroll. Casey's struggling, Danny Willett is imploding, Ian Poulter wishes he was heading to the airport, Matt Fitzpatrick is struggling with the short stick.

Oh, hang on...Justin Rose is salvaging some pride. Back to back birdies for him.

    Langer -1

Birdie on the eighth for the 58-year-old Bernhard Langer, a man thumbing his sun-tanned nose not only at the Augusta greens but also the concept of ageing.

    Casey (+5 after 12)

Paul Casey spends a few minutes deliberating over his club choice on 12. You know the one, short par three, Hogan Bridge, Rae's Creek. The Englishman started well on Thursday, but is way back after a 77 yesterday and three over today. He's on the dancefloor on 12, two putting for a steady par.

  18. Spieth stinkerpublished at 20:25 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

What's happened here? On the third tee, and that's gone a mile right, over the craning necks of the patrons and deep into the jungle. McIlroy into the sand with his own, that's none too pretty either.

  19. Par for McIlroypublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Stays -3

170 yards from the sand for Rory, a chip to within nine feet but the bird stays above the cup. looked good until the final moments, slipped down the left. He comes back to hold the par.

    Rose (+5 after 13)

Not sure why you would change your putter and your putting grip going into the Masters. I'd do it ahead of taking on my old man at the local municipal, not Augusta. But, hey, who are we to judge Justin Rose. Anyway...the Englishman, hanging around the back of the Masters bunch, uses his Sergioesque pencil grip to good effect on the 13th...birdie.
