Look at those shirts, eh? Pure 90s naffery.

No such fashion howlers from Rory McIlroy - clad in an ice-blue zip-up today. He's got a lot of ground to make up, but a low score - preferably combined with a Norman-esque meltdown from Spieth - would give him a sniff. The Northern Irishman is ready to get his round under way - he's playing today with 23-year-old American Daniel Berger, the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Gives his tee shot a whack and...oh, that doesn't look good, a lean and a grimace, and yep, that's gone way right, into the trees. Not the start Rory was looking for.

  2. 'I gave myself a chance'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 10 April 2016

Nick Faldo on BBC Two: "I gave myself a chance because we come back to Augusta every year and know the history. I had seen men come from more than three behind with nine to play so I knew it was possible.

"I wasn’t as confident as 1990 or 92. For me mentally it was one of the best rounds I have ever played in my life."

Nick Faldo is the last Englishman to win the Masters, back in 1996, a final day that is also remembered for Greg Norman's choke.

The Australian held a six-shot lead over Faldo going into the final round but a 78 saw him slip down the leaderboard and Sir Nick win by five shots.

The Masters is on air and we can tell you Sir Nick Faldo has been in this week to look back on his Augusta triumph in 1996.

If you are watching Greg Norman, look away now...

    Holmes (+2 after 1)

Thank you JJ. The world of online betting is a mystery to me (honest, Mum) so I wasn't aware that such obscure bets as 'top German' existed. Whatever next? 'Top slightly rotund American journeyman'? Making a bid for that particular title is JB Holmes, who has just rolled in a birdie on the first to be the first man on the course to get to +2.

    Kaymer (+12 after 16)

On Tuesday, myself and a few colleagues were talking about clubbing together and lumping a wedge on Martin Kaymer finishing as the leading German this week. Bernhard Langer, seemingly, would have left us all going cap in hand to the bank manager tomorrow morning. Luckily we didn't dip our hands in our pockets.

Kaymer, fast becoming an almost-forgettable two-time major winner, was 16 over for the week about an hour ago. But a flurry of eagle, birdie, birdie sees him stride down the 17th with his chin that little higher.

Right, on that note it's time for my playing partner James Gheerbrant to start swinging. Over to him...

    Fitzpatrick, Donaldson (+4)

While Langasque has comfortable scrawled down the best round of this still-dawning day, plenty of other blokes down the leaderboard are in the red. Two men from this fair isle - Matt Fitzpatrick and Jamie Donaldson - are two under for the day, while Paul Casey and Ian Poulter are beating Augusta by a shot.

    Langasque (+10)

Zut alors! French amateur Romain Langasque is torching Augusta. Five birdies on the way home, sees him card a four-under 68. Only the cruellest of men would add that the 20-year-old is 10 over on his Masters debut. Well he is...

Excitement building yet? We're just over an hour away from Jordan Spieth lashing away his opening drive. He'll be going through his bag in the Champions' Locker Room as we speak. Balls? Check. Tees? Check. Pencil? Oh, where's that gone? Sure it was in one of these pockets...

    Poulter (+11 after 15)

...and the Ryder Cup hero clearly paid attention to the Augusta map. Particularly the par-three 16th.

Poults, looking like some sort of golfing drill sergeant dressed in khaki green, arcs a wonderful mid-iron towards the battlefield. Attention! One skip, a roll left and he's six inches from a third birdie of the day.

Ian Poulter looked like he'd rather be heading to the airport than on the course yesterday. But after a good night's kip, he woke up refreshed and ready to attack the Augusta pins...

Wait...there's a trembling and murmuring on the front part of Augusta. Jamie Donaldson is erupting! The fiery Welshman has bagged birdies on two and three, melting his overall score down to three over.

With these scoreable conditions arriving, I expected somebody to soar up the field by now. But the Augusta leaderboard is currently as dormant as Mount Vesuvius.

Adam Scott has dropped back to one under for the day, with Danny Lee and Scott Piercy - both challengers on Friday - also in the red.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick and American amateur Bryson DeChambeau - him underneath the Samuel L Jackson-style flat cap - are also one under.
