"The wind isn’t really scheduled to die down, so it is going to be pretty windy all evening. These guys are going to have to contend with the wind right to the end."

Rory on the tee at 11, a rolling, downhill fairway. As the sun comes out, he goes down the right. He'll be hoping for a some luck with the lie.

Lovely start to Amen Corner for Shane Lowry, whose second to the par-four 11th finds the dance floor, below the pin, 12 feet or so away. He's right to be smiling. A rare birdie chance at the 11th coming up.

    Willett (-2 after 11), Fitzpatrick (-1 after 18)

Sheffielders Danny Willett and Matt Fitzpatrick are looking tastier than a tablespoon of Henderson's Relish.

Willett is tackling that dastardly 11th - Augusta's hardest hole - planting his approach about 30 foot from the pin. Not bad after having to launch one over that ravenous, green-guarding pond. Good attacking putt with the short stick. Par.

Fitzpatrick lines up a monster of a birdie putt on the last. The 21-year-old trundles the ball off right, hoping the final green - or blustery gust of wind - will guide him round into the can. No dice. But he's earned an extra portion at the dinner table, a more than credible opening round.

The thing about Ernie's seven putts is that we've all done it. Share your pain with me. Tell me your golfing disasters. There will be plenty who've done worse than seven putt.

I still can't get over Billy Horschel's get up. He looks like a stick of rock. Much less sunshine in Georgia now, gloomier than it was. There's even chat of frost on Sunday morning.

McIlroy, very snug white trousers, rolls his first putt close enough at the 10th so that he comes away with a par. Steady from the world number three, enough to be in the mix. Amen Corner awaits.

  12. Birdie for Day, one off the leadpublished at 21:52

Oooohhh, he gave it enough, but it just slid by on the left. Very good effort from a cricket wicket away. A birdie at 13 for the world number one. He's one behind Spieth.

Shane Lowry breathes hard through his beard, coming away from 10 with par. He's five under entering Amen Corner, one off the lead. Day for eagle coming up...

Billy Horschel might be a Blackadder fan. "What a pair of trousers!" You need your shades for those pink strides. Put those with Rickie Fowler's high-tops and green shirt, along with Bryson DeChambeau's black flat cap and you've got an awful outfit.

"Day is playing great. He looks a difficult shot and thinks he is invincible. When you are playing like that and executing those shots, you have to go for it."

Oh, Bubba! Birdie chance, par putt missed. Back to levels, you devils. McIlroy, underneath a sun that has disappeared, finds the green with his approach to 10, but little chance of picking up a stroke.

No enough beans for Bubba Watson on 14 - a birdie putt left short of the hole. He'll stay one under at best. Jason Day is in Mickelson country at the 13th. It's Mickelson-esque too. From the pine needles second to the par five, on to the green.

As you'd expect, Ernie Els looks thoroughly hacked off. Holes two to 12 haven't been too bad - two over - it was the 10 at the first that's killed him. His approach to 13 has gone through the back of the green.
