Henrik Stenson slides one wide of the fourth as a chance of a birdie goes begging, while England's Andy Sullivan is short with an attempt on the 15th. Both men are among a large group of golfers on level par.

  2. A late nightpublished at 22:03 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    Thanks Pete.

Hi everyone. Hope you don't have any plans for tonight. We're playing until we can't see any more, so we may well be going until 2.40am (British time that is, American time would be crazy)

  3. BBC Radio 5 live sports extra going livepublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Right, that's me done for a while. Michael Emons has been fed and watered and will take you through the next couple of hours.

A quick reminder though that Radio 5 live Sports Extra has live commentary from Iain Carter and Chris Latchem.

  5. Garcia and Johnson trucking onpublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Sergio Garcia of Spain plays a shotImage source, Getty Images

Another two-putt par from Sergio Garcia keeps him tied fifth at one under par - three behind playing partner Dustin Johnson, who is also in for par on the 14th and yet to drop a shot in his opening 23 holes.

  6. Furyk to one underpublished at 21:52 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Sergio Garcia on the 14th, out of the semi-rough and that's decent. Pin-high about 20 feet left.

Big roar from the galleries. Was it Jason Day with a birdie chance on the 11th? Nope. How about Jim Furyk on the 12th? Putter from the apron and a few feet of borrow from the left. In she pops and the American is up to one under.

Still a bit of life in Ernie Els. The South African with back-to-back birdies to get back to three over. Lots of whooping and hollering from the crowd and Els delights one man further by lobbing him the ball he's just recorded his birdie with.

  7. Mickelson so closepublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Phil Mickelson with the Texas wedge out of the first cut of rough. Pin out. The ball trickles onto the green and begins to turn towards the hole. It turns, turns, turns and then straightens at the last. It was like watching one of those super-slo-mo replays. You could see every dimple of the ball as it crept past the right edge. A par it is.

  8. Johnson shares the leadpublished at 21:42 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Dustin Johnson follows his excellent tee shot on the 13th with a confident putt and the American moves to four under par and a share of the lead with Andrew Landry - remember him? Landry, who holed his solitary shot on Friday to complete his first round with a birdie, will not start his second round until Saturday.

  9. Rose pin-seekerpublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Scott Piercy from 35 feet for birdie on the 15th, his sixth. But that needs to get the brakes on.

Delightful touch from Sergio Garcia. He flicks a low shot out of the bunker that trundles 10 feet past the hole but uses the slope to halve that distance.

On the second Justin Rose seeks out the pin with his second. I reckon I could knock that in for birdie. Playing partner Phil Mickelson is a little too aggressive and his ball skips into the first cut just off the back of the green.

  10. Birdie for Daypublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Jason Day birdies the tenth holeImage source, Getty Images

The more I look at the 13th hole, the more it terrifies me. The hole is 164 yards and the pin is hidden behind a bunker with not much space beyond it. It's a huge green but they are encouraging the players to attack the equivalent size of the Postage Stamp at Troon. If you do judge it right though, as Dustin Johnson did, the ball meanders back towards the flag. Get it wrong, as Sergio Garcia has just done, and you're in a big bunker.

Back on the 10th and Jason Day rolls in a 10-footer for birdie. He is back to five over.

  11. Mickelson scrambling, Rose dropspublished at 21:32 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Whoa. That Dustin Johnson chip went 16 feet by! Up the hill, thankfully, but his birdie putt doesn't bother the hole and it's another par.

Sergio Garcia doesn't learn from Johnson's putt and he too is in for par.

A scrambling par for Mickelson on 10, but Justin Rose bogeys the first to go to two over. Up ahead on 11, Jim Furyk nails a birdie to get to level par.

Your thoughts on the US Open

Andrew Priestley: The US Open is as much about mental strength and endurance as it is about swinging a golf club. The golf course could wear you down. Oakmont is a very tough golf course naturally, nevermind the fact it's just been given the full USGA treatment ahead of the US Open.

Simon Batting: You say it's a harsh turnaround but McIlroy et al will have to play two rounds tomorrow in possible harder conditions.

  13. Postpublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Mickelson's approach to the first, from the middle of the fairway, has found the thick greenside rough. He hacks out and watches his ball trickle its way ever nearer the hole, finally pulling up a dozen feet short. Testing par putt.

Sergio on the 12th and his checking chip doesn't bite enough. Dustin Johnson from just off the front of the green plays a similar shot. It looks as though it's going to finish stone dead but catches a slope and ends up near Garcia's ball, eight feet from the hole.

Back-to-back birdies for Scott Piercy who is suddenly back to two under after five.

  14. Day out with a driverpublished at 21:23 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

World number one Jason Day, who had a six-over 76 in round one, is away on the 10th hole. He had said he would plot a cautious route around Oakmont but after his round one struggles, he's straight out with the driver and that's found the middle of the fairway. He is playing with South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen, who finds a fairway bunker, and fellow Australian Adam Scott who pings it into the cabbage.

  15. Sullivan birdies 12published at 21:20 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Dustin Johnson booms his drive down the 617-yard par five 12th. A decent kick-on, the sort the players weren't getting earlier in the day when the fairways were softer, and he could be eyeing the green with his second.

Up on the green, England's Andrew Sullivan curls in a 20-footer for a birdie that gets him up to level par for the tournament.

Angel Cabrera opens with a bogey five to slip to one over.

Well those certainly are eye-catching, but they look like swimming shorts to me?!

  17. Mickelson, Rose and Stenson under waypublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Scott Piercy on the short 13th to a pin tucked away at the front edge and that's a belter and getting better all the time as the ball funnels back to the hole. An 18-inch tap-in to get back into the red.

On the first tee, Phil Mickelson. I wonder if the starter ever has the urge to prefix his name with six-time US Open runner-up? England's Justin Rose is next to hit and we are reminded of his victory in 2013. Both players on the short stuff.

Henrik Stenson, who outplayed his partners in round one with a one-under 69, starts with an arrow.

  18. Pars for Johnson and Garciapublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Sergio Garcia watches his tee shotImage source, AP

Over on 11 and Dustin Johnson with a wedge from 124 yards but that's not one of his better efforts. He's on the green but a good 35 feet from the hole.

Sergio Garcia from a fraction over 48 feet, up the hill, leaves his birdie put a fraction under one foot shy of the hole for a tap-in par to stay one under.

Johnson hits his effort a couple of feet by and he's got another slider down the hill for par. Never in doubt.

Scott Piercy is back at level par after a bogey six on 12.

  19. Temper, temperpublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Jamie Donaldson at the 12th. On for three on the par-five but he's not happy with his approach. It's a good 30 feet away and he angrily spears his wedge across the fairway, knocking over his bag. He tries to pick up his bag but it falls over again. There's a fair bit of anger in the Welshman who takes a huge divot out of the fairway with a grumpy hack. His caddy hands him the putter and he strides onto the green to a couple of boos from the crowd.
