  1. Mickelson finds the bunkerpublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Stenson -12 (17) Mickelson -11 (17)

Phil Mickelson takes his time over this approach, deep in conversation with his caddy before telling him "this should be do-able".

It's a little awkward for the left-hander having to play at it down a slight slope. Oh dear. He comes up short and the shot finds its way into a bunker about 20 yards from the pin. And he's not happy with an over-eager cameraman behind him.

Henrik Stenson pushes his approach further left, it avoids the bunker and it is the Swede who will be happier strolling up the 18th.

  2. WATCH: Mickelson chips in for a birdie at the 13thpublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Mickelson -11 (17)

Phil Mickelson has won the Open Championship before and at the moment it looks a straight fight between the American and Sweden's Henrik Stenson.

One of Mickelson's most successful shots today came on the 13th, when he putted for a birdie.

  3. Who is Beef?published at 19:11 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Johnston -5 (18)

He has become a cult hero and is now fourth at The Open, but who is Beef?

    • Ranked 104th in the world.
    • Won the Spanish Open in April, his first European tour win and then declared “I can’t wait to get hammered.”
    • A member of North Middlesex Golf Club.
    • Scored a hole-in-one at the BMW PGA Championship in May 2015 to win a car and celebrated on the tee by chest bumping a mate
    • Drove a beefburger on the driving range at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

  4. Beef on salad and pizzapublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Johnston -5 (18)

It did not take long for Andrew 'Beef' Johnston to get round to talking food in another fun-packed post-round Troon press conference full of great one liners, following his one-under-par 70.

"When I was asked on TV last night what I was going to have for tea, I said 'Caesar Salad', so I had one bloke screaming 'Caesar Salad' at me for the first six holes. It was hilarious.

"Actually, I had a pizza in the end. Just a 10-inch one. I like Caesar Salad. I just don't tend to choose it."

  5. Leaders play the lastpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Stenson -12 (17) Mickelson -11 (17)

So Henrik Stenson, the leader, strikes his tee shot slightly left and watches it swing right in the South Ayrshire breeze, that's nicely in the middle of the fairway.

Phil Mickelson follows, his ball takes a similar trajectory but with a little more draw to the right finds the slightly longer grass.

  6. Stenson takes the leadpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Stenson -12 (17) Mickelson -11 (17)

Henrik Stenson's tee shot leaves him with a 16-foot putt to make birdie and take a share of the lead. He does it, wonderful putt, he started wandering towards that one as it was on its way to the hole - the Swede knew that was in as soon as he made contact.

Phil Mickelson, having played a shot extra, has to attack his putt from a similar distance but to the opposite side of the pin, and he doesn't make it.

Only a fourth bogey of the championship for Lefty, but one that drops him to second. Stenson therefore takes the lead.

  7. 'I'm going to have to shoot under par on the back nine'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Haas -6 (18)

American Bill Haas has never finished inside the top 10 of a major, and will start the final day in third position on six under.

"It is not a good record (in majors) and I'm a better player than that," Haas told Sky Sports. "I have not done it yet, but after three rounds I'm doing OK so hopefully I can hang in there.

"If I want to win, I'm going to have to shoot under par on the back nine and that will be the best nine holes of my life."

  8. 'Boom'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Mickelson -12 (16) Stenson -11 (16)

"That's OK, Phil," shouts a supporter in the crowd straddling the 17th fairway, but the American doesn't look so sure as his tee shot trickles off the fairway.

"Boom" is the shout - perhaps from the same spectator? - following Henrik Stenson's effort off the tee box, and that's because he's landed it nicely on the green.

  10. 'I had so much fun out there'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Johnston -5 (18)

Andrew "Beef" Johnston speaking to Radio 5 live said: "That was fantastic, I had so much fun out there. I am loving it, the support is amazing.

"Life has changed a bit, but I am doing the same things, getting up, playing golf and enjoying myself.

"I had a job interview in the city and was offered the job for a week's trial. I was in Starbucks and made the decision to carry on playing golf or do something else. My heart came out and I carried on playing golf - luckily I made that decision.

"Tomorrow I will carry on as I have been for the last three days, I will concentrate, not give up and be happy."

  11. Mickelson regains leadpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Mickelson -12 (16) Stenson -11 (16)

A birdie for Phil Mickelson moves him back into an outright lead. Confident putting from the American to stroke it in from around eight or nine feet.

Henrik Stenson, following a tidy bunker shot to ease it within four feet of the pin, saves par to stop the American pulling away any further.

  12. Reigning champion Zach Johnson struggles todaypublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Z Johnson -1 (18)

Last year's champion Zach Johnson said he was not too happy at having to give the Claret Jug back a few days ago.

Well, he is going to have to go some on Sunday to get his hands back on the trophy after a disappointing round of four over.

His third round started well with a birdie at the second, but that was as good as it got for him. Double bogeys on the fifth and 10th, as well as a bogey at the last, have left him on one under overall, a score only good enough for tied 13th at the moment.

  13. Stenson in the sandpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Stenson -11 (15) Mickelson -11 (15)

Not a good lie on the left for Henrik Stenson at the par-five 16th. He found the rough from the tee and has to chop it back on to the fairway from the right but it leaves him almost 180 yards from the flag.

He goes for green, but that finds sand instead. Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, makes the green in three. Not just that, he's within 10 feet and has another chance at a birdie.

  14. Haas aims for first top-10 major finishpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Haas -6 (18)

American Bill Haas has never finished inside the top 10 of a major, but he will be devastated if he does not do so here.

After three rounds at Royal Troon, the world number 35 is currently third on the leaderboard, five strokes behind the pairing of Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson. Haas shot a 68 on Thursday, a 70 yesterday and a 69 today to sit on six under.

He had his best day with the putter today, only needing 25 putts, compared to 27 and 29 on day one and two respectively.

  15. Windy practice of no helppublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Willett +7 (18)

Masters champion Danny Willett has not been the only one struggling to cope with playing into the wind at Royal Troon this week.

But one of his key frustrations, he admitted after a third-round 74, is that the practice ground limits what you can do.

"You can't do much on the range," he said. "It's straight downwind, so you can't see whether it's good or bad."

  16. Stenson in the roughpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Stenson -11 (15) Mickelson -11 (15)

Henrik Stenson takes a three wood to the 16th tee, but that one drops into a spot of rough.

Phil Mickelson struts straight up to his tee shot with a big left-hander that avoids that patch of long grass and puts him on the fairway.

Incidentally, Stenson appears to have adopted Mickelson's tactic of attaching a binder clip to his cap. If you can't beat 'em...

  18. All level at the toppublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Stenson -11 (15) Mickelson -11 (15)

So, back with the leaders and Henrik Stenson has a chance for a second successive birdie. This one's at about 15 or 16 feet, but the Swede knows immediately he hasn't hit it - something you have to do on the slower greens at Troon on Saturday.

    He settles for par.

Phil Mickelson is attacking the pin from about half that distance for par, and he makes it - that bogey at the 14th was only his third of the week.
