  1. Birdie!published at 14:11 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Clarke +2 (15), Z Johnson -3 (4)

Darren Clarke with some quite stunning putting on the 15th. His ball travels for seemingly miles before dropping. The distance is so great that his playing partner gets the ball from the cup to him.

Back-to-back birdies for him and Zach Johnson on four, he's now three under and tied for sixth.

  2. Back-to-back birdiespublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    McIlroy -3 (6)

Another huge drive for Rory McIlroy down the par-five sixth, where he has birdied on each occasion this week.

He makes the green in three, but looks like he wanted that one to run a little further towards the pin. It stopped pretty much dead about six feet from home

No problems for McIlroy with the putter this time though, a clean sweep of birdies at the sixth for the week at Royal Troon, and that's back-to-back birdies for the Northern Irishman on Sunday.

  4. What happened?published at 14:06 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Garcia -2, Bradley -1 (1)

On the first green Keegan Bradley is lame over his par putt from five feet and that's a shot gone.

Back on the tee a certain Sergio Garcia rips driver and Patrick Reed gets going too.

What about Sergio eh? A big win at the AT&T Byron Nelson this year, nine PGA Tour wins in his career, 11 European Tour wins, zero majors. It must play on his mind now.

I can recall him having a brilliant duel with Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship in 1999 (pictured). The excitement around Sergio was immense, I don't think anyone would have envisaged his major drought back then.

Solid start on one, both he and Patrick Reed set up birdie chances.

  5. Spieth cards three underpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Spieth +2 (18)

Jordan Spieth is back in the clubhouse after by far his best round of the week, shooting three under.

The American two-time major winner eagled the fourth and added birdies at the 10th, 11th and 16th on Sunday.

Bogeys at the eighth and 15th pegged him back a little, seeing the 22-year-old finish the week at two over.

  6. That's ugly!published at 13:57 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Kuchar +6 (10)

Matt Kuchar has come unstuck at the Postage Stamp.

The American left the par three eighth with a quadruple bogey.

    Ouch.

  7. What a shot!published at 13:55 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Johnson -2 (3), Schwartzel -3 (1)

Charl Schwartzel has to clear a path in the on-course fans on the first. The path leads to a greenside bunker though as he under cooks his effort.

Lovely Zach-Johnson-esque putt from Zach Johnson as he makes birdie on three.

Schwartzel takes a handful of practice swings on one in the sand, here we go... it's in. What a bunker shot from the trap, a little spin and jackpot.

Schwartzel went into the stands, then to the sand, then to dream land. He's yet to play a shot off clean grass yet has a birdie.

  8. Birdiepublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    McIlroy -2 (5)

Birdie. And after missing a good to chance at the fourth, Rory McIlroy claws one back at the par-three fifth. Green, cup for the Northern Irishman.

That is two birdies already today, and 11 on the front nine in total this week for Rory.

  10. Eaglepublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Watson +4 (16)

Bubba Watson hasn't enjoyed the best of weeks, but at least he'll remember the 16th at Royal Troon fondly.

He posted a birdie there yesterday and has followed that up with an eagle today. One under for Sunday from Bubba, but four over for the championship.

  11. FORE!published at 13:50 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Hatton -2 (1), Schwartzel -2, Bradley -2

"FORE LEFT," screams the 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel. That ball is so far left they may need to duck in Nigeria.

Not an ideal opening tee shot. He's alongside Keegan Bradley - another major winner of course - he hits the fairway nicely with an iron. Bradley has the build of a giraffe doesn't he? Lean and leggy.

These two are following Englishman Tyrell Hatton who made a nice birdie on one with a 15ft putt.

  13. Phil in the housepublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Mickelson -11 (14:35 BST)

Phil Mickelson is on site and walks with coffee in hand. "Hey guys", he says to camera men.

Off to the range for some looseners he goes, grey pants, black long sleeve top. It's not exactly the outfit of a man wanting to make a statement.

Lefty has been around forever though hasn't he? You can rest assured this would mean the world to him, a real reminder of just what he can do and that he can beat the new breed.

There was a day when he looked fresh faces too you know...

  15. Birdie chance missedpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    McIlroy -1 (4)

Tricky for Rory McIlroy as he has to play slightly up the slope after sending his tee shot into the long stuff, but he gets the trajectory needed to take that between a pair of bunkers and up towards the edge of the putting surface.

He takes the putter to his third shot, and a long uphill run towards the flag on the par-five fourth hands the Northern Irishman another birdie opportunity.

But he can't take it from all of five feet. It flirts with the cup, but doesn't drop, and McIlroy will be disappointed to only make par.

    Sullivan -1 (7), Johnson -1 (1), Westwood +2 (14) Day E (7)

    Andy sullivanImage source, PA

Lee Westwood made the turn four under for the day but has already given a couple back. Andy Sullivan just lost a little momentum with bogey on six, he does however hit the dance floor on seven and can get that shot back quickly if he nails a 15ft putt.

Dustin Johnson is now on the course and wedges into the first green sweetly, the birdie putt slides past though, as does that of Sullivan on seven.

The putts are not dropping from Jason Day. He sees a big break from right-to-left on seven end up six inches short. Par.

  18. Spieth bogeyspublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Spieth +3 (15)

Jordan Spieth has dropped a shot on the back nine. His eighth bogey or worse on the home run this week. The American bogeys the 15th to go two under for Sunday and three over for the championship.

  19. Two horses, few recent winspublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Stenson -12, Mickelson -11 (14:35 BST)

The bookmakers currently make Bill Haas - who sits third - over 40/1 to win this.

    That implies a two-horse race.

    Stenson v MickelsonImage source, .

So what about the winning feeling? Stenson has not won on the PGA Tour this year but did win the BMW International Open on the European Tour. Despite his position at world number six, he's not a prolific winner of late.

Phil Mickelson - world number 19 - has not won since 2013. Which tournament? The Open. He loves it.

  20. WATCH: Palmer's superb eagle at the sixthpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Palmer +1 (11)

Ryan Palmer is two under for his round and this eagle at the par-five sixth certainly helped.
