Rory McIlroy from the first cut on one. He has no sight of this green due to a mound up ahead of him. Lovely swing, huge divot, roars for Rors! His ball comes to rest a few feet from the pin. Possibly the perfect start...

Branden Grace's caddie Zach Rasego says they had no idea they were going to create history with the first 62 in men's major history until the last possible moment.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "We had no idea until the last hole when Jason Dufner's caddie said this putt is for history. A golf score is a golf score."

History-maker Branden Grace is grinning like a Cheshire Cat as he does his post-round media duties. He reckons he did not know that he was on the verge of becoming the first man to shoot 62 at a major.

Hmmm. Where's that thinking face emoji when you need it?

An emotional moment for Grace, a historic one for golf. You just wonder if, in these benign conditions, he might be joined by another history maker before this third round is out.

People have been getting touch and saying 'Hang on, it is a par 70 and only eight under par so we have seen lower rounds in relation to par'.

But the fact of the matter is, what is recorded is the totally number of shots played, irrespective of what par is,

No one has covered a major course in 62 shots before, it is an extraordinary moment for the game of golf.

Branden Grace hugs his caddie and playing partner Jason Dufner, breathing a huge of sigh of relief as he contemplates what has just happened.

Might take a while to sink in.

Mention all the greats of the game and not one has shot a 62. This is a momentous day.

He will go down in history, the day Branden Grace broke the unbreakable record.

If he does it again tomorrow, he wins The Open. It is incredible stuff.

It is incredible to be here to watch it happen. People have been trying to break the record for a long time.

That was just under three feet, but you can bet his senses were hypersensory, he would feel his heart beating.

You have to quiet all that down to hit that putt.

This is the moment. Branden Grace plonks his ball down, a three foot putt away from a 62... he's done it.

Amazing, Grace. (I've been saving that line.)

The 29-year-old South African becomes the first man to shoot 62 in a major.

That was a phenomenal putt. This is not about the tournament, this about breaking a record. The greatest players in the world for 146 yeas have been playing in majors and no one has shot a 62 or better.

Soak it up Branden. The South African doffs his cap as the applause rains down on his walk up the 18th green.

He assesses all angles before stepping up to his ball. I'd be struggling to keep my putter still. No such problem for Grace.

A superb, perfectly-judged putt sidles up to the side of the hole. History beckons.

That is the adrenaline, it gets into you. Maybe he got a little gust of wind. It could have been so many things but clearly that was the wrong side to miss it on.

It will be a difficult two putt to break the record from here.

Actually Branden Grace's ball ran into the first cut of rough. No drama though. He still has a good lie and a good angle.

Mid-iron in hand, he whips through the ball, almost chasing his ball up the fairway. Does he like it? Not really.

He pitches past the flag, no check is forthcoming and the ball dribbles off the back edge. A long way back...
