    D Johnson (-2 after 11) Cabera-Bello (level after 1) Watson (level after 1)

Bubba Watson and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are through one in par while on 11, Dustin Johnson goes close to another birdie but leaves the putt a touch short.

On the seventh, Sergio Garcia is seeking a birdie but the putt is long, long, long and in. A monster. Two under for the day, level for the week.

    Everyone's talking about Branden.

The number-one trend in the UK right now. The #LoveIsland crew will be fuming.

    Grace (-4 after 17)

Branden Grace is EIGHT under for the day, moving him to four under overall and within two of overnight leader Jordan Spieth.

The world number 35 needs a par four on the last for his 62, which means - like Monty says - he doesn't have to chase it.

Still he pulls out the driver on the 18th tee - and he spanks it to perfection. Left side of the fairway, ideal route in to the green.

It was a perfect lag. He knows exactly where he is now. This is the first time where a player has had the chance to par the last to score a 62 and make history. In the past, players have always been needing a birdie.

    Grace (-4 after 17)

Grace is standing on the top tier of the 17th green, then wanders around the side to size up all the angles.

"Get in!" shouts one hopeful punter about a milli-second after his ball sets off. Right to left, then left to right. It veers off, but most importantly he has nailed the pace. Pin high, about a putter's head away to the right.

A tap in for birdie. Grace needs a four down the last for a 62 - and his place in history.

Charley Hoffman has just raced to a new level in my estimations. On the PGA Tour website, under 'special interests' most players have hobbies like sports, watching films, photography in the case of Hideki Matsuyama, etc.

Not Charley. Sure he throws in the fact he likes snow skiiing and jet skiing but wait for it... he also lists "barbecueing".

He's of rotund build, now you know why. Go on Charley, go get them burgers on the flames.

Maybe he should stay at the Open Camping Village next year (see 14:18 entry)....

    Grace (-3 after 16)

Branden Grace does not even need a fairway wood from where he is. "This is the perfect club for you," his caddy reckons. Confident words. Looks like a long iron.

Nailed it. The South African goes straight for the flag, his ball dropping down over the pin and onto the top deck about 15 foot away.

That's for an eagle, remember. And a pay rise - or a beer tonight at the very least - for his caddy.

Why does Rafael Cabrera-Bello use a mirror on the ground during his warm up? A. Because he's so good looking? Or B. It helps to check his alignment.

Watch as Dustin Johnson pulls his shot wide on the fifth but incredibly it bounces up off the grandstand and straight on the green. Could it be the American's lucky day?

This is big news, 62 is a big deal.

Branden Grace is thinking about it, there is anxiety there, that wasn't there in the first 14 holes.

I am convinced he was anxious about it and missed his putt on the 15th.

    Grace (-3 after 16)

    The next leg of Branden Grace's history-making odyssey? The 17th. The par-five eagle-producing 17th.

It has been the easiest hole on the course today, with as many people making eagles or birdies as they have pars.

Grace has the big dog in hand... and it is barking. Position A for the South African, on the fairway, slightly to the right, and the green reachable in two.

    Fowler (level after five)

The fifth is a 346-yard par four. Rickie Fowler strolls on to the tee, pulls out his driver, takes a bit off the top of the swing and mullers one down the middle.

The American bends down and nonchalantly picks up his tee as his ball sails towards the green. It pitches fractionally short, hops up and rolls towards the cup. It's in....it's not...at the last moment it drifts inches left.

A tap-in eagle and he is back to level par for the tournament.

    This. Is. ON!

Branden Grace is one more birdie away from becoming the first man to shoot 62 at a major.

A wide grin breaks out across his face after he nails a putt longer than the length of a python.

    Grace (-6 after 15)

Branden Grace wallops his tee-shot onto the fairway on the 16th, another makeable hole which is playing under par.

The South African knocks a neat, but slightly conservative, approach on to the front of the green. He looks like a man who knows he could set a record. Slightly nervy, slightly bemused.

    A long putt awaits...

The Open is not the only big tournament going on today.

Sale Golf Club, near Manchester, is holding one of its flagship tournaments - the Richard Burton Trophy, named after their former captain.

Dick Burton won The Open at St Andrews in 1939 and held the title until 1946 because the Championship wasn't held during World War II.

    McIlroyImage source, .

Rory McIlroy speaks to Sky Sports: "We've got a better day than yesterday and the course looks really receptive. There are low scores out there. It's a day to be aggressive and try to post a number."

On thinking about the technicalities of his putting stroke less and needing just 24 putts on Friday: "It feels good, even the putting in the last couple of weeks has felt better. I felt it was going in the right direction with nothing to show for it. Once yo see a couple go in you can get some momentum."

Changes he has made since being five over on Thursday: "More mental things than anything else. Trying to visualise the shot more and paint a clear picture in my head. It's helped."
