I caught up with Bradley, 12 from North Carolina who decided to pull out all the stops in the fashion stakes today.

Donning Plus fours and stars and stripes, he has recycled the outfit he wore to the Ryder Cup last year to cheer on his home nation.

His Dad, originally from Manchester, also paid homage to the US in a slightly more modest way.

If Jordan Spieth or Rory McIlroy are watching this and see Dustin Johnson go four under, they will be thinking if you can do it, so can I. They will be watching where the pins are located, how the balls are behaving on the greens. They will not be worrying about other players, just themselves.

    Grace (-6 after 15)

Branden Grace sizes up his birdie putt on 15. There have been 12 birdies here today, making it the second easiest hole of the day.

He rattles his ball forward confidently, just round the right side of his playing partner's Jason Dufner ball marker, before it bends back and hits the left lip.

Time stops momentarily... is it going to drop? No! Groans from Grace and groans from the galleries.

World number six Jason Day on BBC Radio 5 live: "There will be a lot of guys be happy to be walking off course at the end of their round today, compared to the last few days, when it felt miserable.

"The conditions are perfect. The wind is non-existent, there are soft conditions on the green and very receptive fairways. It is the perfect forum for somene to go low.

"I definitely think with how they have set the course up, there is a chance for the guys to go low.

"I lost four putts in the heart and still shot five under.

"I would not be surprised if 62 happened."

    Grace (-6 after 14)

Imagine what's going through Branden Grace's mind? Surely he is aware of what he could achieve.

A little dink from left of the 15th green, lands it short and hopes it nudges off the downslope and runs up to the can.

Nope, not quite. He's about eight or nine feet away. Grace's hand gestures indicate what he was trying to do.

They call it moving day. That can be meant in a positive or negative way. They must move in the right direction.

Dustin Johnson, Branden Grace and Jason Day are doing it today, but they are a little bit far back.

Today is an easy day on the course. It is rare you get a day like this. The wind is only 4mph which is nothing, while the fairways are softer because of yesterday's deluge.

It is set up today for someone who feels they can take the challenge on. They need to be positive and aggressive. I hate to say but Jodie Mudd's record of 63 in 1991 is under threat and I think we might see the first 62 shot in a major.

    Grace (-6 after 14)

Here's Branden Grace on 15, the first of those two par fives. Fairway wood in hand, a slight breeze behind, he fancies his chances of reaching the green in two.

The scrunched up face tells you everything. He doesn't like it. The South African has pulled it left, but gets a stroke of luck as it evades both bunker and thick rough.

    A chip and a putt...

    Grace (-6 after 14)

Branden Grace has knocked in another birdie! The South African is six under for day, moving him two under overall and four off leader Jordan Spieth.

Two more birdies in the final four holes (without dropping a shot, of course) with see him become the first player to shoot 62 at a major.

And he's got two gettable five pars coming up...

    D Johnson (-1)

    Colin Montgomerie
Former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie on BBC Radio 5 live

Dustin Johnson is playing as aggressively as he possibly can, and one player is going to get away with that.

You're only one bad shot away from a double bogey out here, but Dustin Johnson is that good and wouldn't it be great if a 62 was shot, it came from the number one in the world.

I'd always wondered where the golfers stayed. Picture the scene... John Daly sat outside his tent, sizzling a few pork steaks on the barbecue, his loud trousers hung on the side of the tent to dry.

I'm sure there were a great deal of 'happy campers' here this morning when the sun started to break through the clouds.

The Open Camping Village is located a few miles from the course at Victoria Park in Southport.

I'm sure the 750 who snapped up a camping ticket weren't too enthused at the prospect of spending another night in the rain!

    D Johnson (-1)

A textbook two from Dustin Johnson. Knock your tee-shot on a par three to within a jumbo sausage of the hole, tap in the putt.

He might even get a couple of quid off his playing partner Paul Casey if they're having a twos game.

That's his second of the round. Four birdies in his opening seven holes have moved the world number one into the red.

BBC Radio 5 live golf expert Jay Townsend: "Spieth top after shooting a 68, Koepka second after shooting a 67 AND Rory third after shooting a 65."

Former Ryder Cup vice captain Des Smyth: "Spieth leading, Koepka second, Rory third. But don't rule out Richie Ramsay who starts the day in fifth."

  16. Next one on the rank...published at 14:08 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Royal Birkdale

Victory for either Open Championship leader Jordan Spieth, currently the world number three, or Rory McIlroy, ranked four, would lift them to number two in the rankings.

World number one Dustin Johnson's ranking would be unaffected whatever happens here at Royal Birkdale.

As for two of the old timers, if 39-year-old Matt Kuchar wins, it could mean a top 10 spot, if other results go his way.

On the other hand, victory for 41-year-old Ian Poulter, third after two rounds, could mean a top 20 spot if other results go his way.

That would be some comeback for the Woburn man/Arsenal fan after ending 2016 ranked number 184 in the world after his long-standing battle with a foot injury.

South Africa's Shaun Norris was the first man out on the course at 09:20 BST.

With an odd number of players making the cut, Norris was paired with Birkdale assistant pro Gregg Pettersen.

"I got the call last night about 9.50pm. I'd just left the building and locked the shop up," says Pettersen.

"It was an amazing experience. I get to play this links regularly but that was a different thing for me."

Norris, 35, started the day on five over, but tore up the course with a stunning five-under 65 to go to level par and tie for 10th place.

Is this a sign of things to come today?

  18. Postpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

Lee Westwood has been the nearly man of the majors in his generation, earning a record nine top-three finishes without winning one.

It is doubtful he will earn a 10th at Birkdale. And he certainly won't earn a first Claret Jug.

After following an opening 71 with a 74, Westy shoots under par for the first time with a one-under 69.
