Lee Westwood will finish well down the leaderboard at his 23rd straight Open Championship on one over par for the tournament.

Ahead of his next tournament, the WGC at Bridgestone, followed by the US PGA Championship, the final major of the year, at Quail Hollow, he told BBC Sport: "I might have found something that will make me a hit it a little bit better. I can build on today. I've shot 69-67 at the weekend and now I'm looking forward to Bridgestone, and then the PGA.

"I hit a lot of good shots. I got close a couple of times and made some nice putts. But the course is not playing at its most difficult. I'm pretty sure there's another low one out there.

"And I got pretty much what I deserved all week, as this is the fairest links course you could ever wish for.

"I've hit some good shots this week but I also hit some poor ones and they're the most destructive. I had a couple of double bogeys and you can't afford to do that."

  2. Rafa 'could play better'published at 14:46 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Cabrera-Bello (-3, after 4)

Rafa Cabrera-Bello's dad says his son is playing well... "but he could play better".

No pleasing some, hey? First tournament win in five years last week at the Scottish Open, on course for his best Open finish, and the Spaniard is through the first four holes of his final round at Birkdale without dropping a shot.

It keeps the 33-year-old, who is getting married later this year, tied seventh at three under.

    Spieth (-10), Kuchar (-8)

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport golf correspondent at Royal Birkdale

Matt Kuchar has won 40 millon dollars on the PGA Tour yet he has never fully challenged for a major championship. This will feel like a completely new experience for him,

    Spieth (-10), Kuchar (-8)

    Jay Townsend

It is an opportunity for Matt Kuchar. It was a bit of a nervy start by Jordan Spieth, but a bit unlucky.

  5. Birdie!published at 14:44 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Li (-4, after 16)

Haotong Li is on the charge! Back-to-back birdies has sent him level with that four-strong group tied behind the top two.

  6. Bogey for Spiethpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Spieth (-10), Kuchar (-8)

Matt Kuchar could heap some real pressure on Jordan Spieth here. Unfortunately for Kooch, he's tugged his approach to the right fringe, leaving him with a monster of a putt. A decent stab puts him just short.

Still, this isn't a certainty for Jordan Spieth. He fires it out right, the ball refusing to come back. Only his fifth bogey of the week, and his first in 21 holes.

That three-shot lead is going to be trimmed back - unless Kuchar can't convert. No problem. Two it is.

And all four blobs on the American leader's card came in Friday's second round.

  8. 'Playing into Spieth's hands'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Spieth (-11), Koepka (-4), Connelly (-4)

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live golf expert

They will be looking for any glimmer of hope they can get, but right now Brooks Koepka and Austin Connelly are playing into Jordan Spieth's hands.

    McIlroy (-2 after 5)

Rory McIlroy on five, wedge in hand, takes it through the ball and as is becoming normal in this event, looks unhappy. He's on the dancefloor but the tune playing will be something dull like a Sam Smith number as he has 35ft for birdie. That was loose. Hideki Matsuyama stops the rot with par on two... back to Rory... he will have to putt through the fringe of the green here such is the shape of the putting surface and the location of his ball... lovely strike... close but no more. Five holes, five pars.

    Spieth (-11), Kuchar (-8)

"FOORRRRE LEFT!!!" That warning is shouted with a Texan drawl on the first tee.

    Yup, it's Jordan Spieth.

The heavy rough yanks at the leader's short iron, his wrists not strong enough to guide his ball straight. He's ended up with a decent lie, about 50 yards at 7 o'clock to the pin.

What can he do from here? Like he did on the practice ground earlier, he knocks it to within a conversion.

  11. Bogey, bogey...published at 14:37 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Koepka (-4), Connelly (-4, after 1)

Urrghhh. Brooks Koepka has just missed the simplest of par putts.

The American opted for his putter from the fringes and coaxed it up to within three of four feet of the flag, but he then catches the back of the cup and watches it stay up. Bogey, and a shake of the head.

Austin Connelly drops one on his first hole, too - that bunker-bank combo was costly.

    Poulter (-2), Ramsay (-1)

Poulter on five... putting in from the fringe, leaving stick in hole. The fist-pump tells you where the ball has gone... down the drain.

  13. Postpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    McIlroy (-2 after 4) Grace (-4 after 1)

Rory McIlroy is through the fourth hole with four pars as Branden Grace knocks one into the second green with real intent. One bounce on the spot, it settles down leaving 10ft for birdie.

Today's prediction: The winning score will be -13. But will it be Jordan?

  15. Postpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Li (-3, after 15)

Haotong Li has suddenly appeared on the leaderboard, that's because the Chinese 21-year-old has just carded his fourth birdie of the day and has not dropped a shot in 27 holes.

He's up into tied six at three under.

  16. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 23 July 2017

    Spieth (-11), Kuchar (-8)

"Koooooch!" That familiar drone fills the Birkdale air as Matt Kuchar is the penultimate man to tee off on the final day.

A sharp ping of metal hitting ball is followed by applause. They like it. So does Kooch. Down the middle.

Next up is our leader. Jordan Spieth's opening offer is met by a muted applause, he's gone left. Oooh, he doesn't get the luck that Dustin Johnson had a few moments ago. In the rough and a far from ideal stance with his ball below his feet.

    Koepka (-5), Connelly (-5, on 1)

Brooks Koepka has two bunkers to contend with as he looks to approach the green from some light rough skirting the fairway. He avoids them both, but that's a little heavy and skips on past the flag leaving him work to do.

Austin Connelly can't see the green. Not because he's one of the shorter players out there, but because he's tucked into the side of a bank in the rough on the opposite side of the fairway.

He goes from the bank to a greenside bunker, and then is only a few inches away from chipping in out of the sand! It runs on... par putt to come.

    Spieth (-11, 14:30 BST)

Jordan Spieth is determined not to let the demons come back today at Royal Birkdale.

"I've had the high and the humbling," says the world number three.

"I've had a five-shot lead in a major and squandered it before. I will keep my head down and not get ahead of myself.

"Everything I've gone through, both good and bad, is advantageous for me. If I win, I'll still be learning and it all goes into my process.

"It will be emotionally draining but I need to stay neutral in my head."
