Right from the start Spieth couldn't hole anything and it looked liked he was going to be reeled in. He was seriously vulnerable. Then we came to the infamous incident at the 13th. He hit a shot that went so far right it was extraordinary. I've never seen anyone go over the other side of that bank, ever.

But his scramble from there gave him something. He could have taken 10, but he got a five. From there on in it was electrifying.

It was like he was a boxer who had been hit on the nose and thought "that really really hurt, but I tell you what the next time I throw a punch the other fella is going to get hit".

A switch went. And that is what golf is like. He was a different player and all credit to him.

Overall, the course was superb, the crowds huge, the weather varying, it has been a fantastic for everyone connected with golf. What a week.

That Claret Jug is worth $1,845,000 (£1,419,777) to the Champion golfer this year. That should be enough for a good holiday.

Based on 5%, which is probably a little less than he gets, caddie Michael Greller has picked up around £70,000 too. That decision to quit his job as a teacher and be on Spieth's bag gets better and better and better...

It's worth remembering that Jordan Spieth started nervously today with three early bogeys.

Remember when Jordan Spieth looked like he was going to match his Masters meltdown? It seems a long time ago now.

The champion made a shaky start to his final round, blobbing three bogeys onto his card in the opening four holes. Perhaps it was all part of the Spieth show.

After the Wimbledon final, Tim Henman described Roger Federer as having arrived "in eighth gear" and I feel Jordan Speith has the same ability to arrive ready on the first tee on the Thursday in a much higher gear than anybody else.

He has that ability to keep that intensity throughout the weekend. If he hits good shots, or bad shots, the reactions are very similar. It's all part of the process that gets him to the final goal - to collect the Claret Jug.

That is what makes this young man able to do this at his tender age.

Spieth has that intangible that you can't really identify. You can't describe it. He does things other people don't do. I think there was scar tissue that has healed after he blew the Masters at Augusta. He got off to the same kind of start today.

It was heading towards the same sort of thing. I was thinking back to Augusta. Even though he won more events since, I think it did scar him a little bit and probably made him stronger in the end. He's broken through that now winning here. He won essentially having been behind with five holes to play. It showed incredible grit. I couldn't believe he could continue to hit the shots he did and hole the putts he did, it was special out there.

Victory means Spieth, currently the world number three, will climb up a place when the latest rankings are released tomorrow.

Dustin Johnson's spot on top of the pile was always going to remain unaffected whatever happened at Royal Birkdale.

And that remarkable proved to be the catalyst in Jordan Spieth's triumph.

The world number three followed that great escape with birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to accelerate away from Matt Kuchar.

Moments later he ensured the Claret Jug would be going back across the Pond. And here's how he did it...

Here's Jordan Spieth explaining what happened off the 13th tee...

"I didn't want it to go left, so I opened up the face and a little bit of water got in and I hit a spray ball," he told Sky Sports.

And how he got away with a bogey...

"I don't know how I made five there, but that putt right there was as tough as any today to read and when that went in I felt like I had got away with murder."

Jordan Spieth might think he will be "free rolling" at the US PGA Championship, but the world's media won't be taking their foot off the pedal when it comes to highlighting what he could achieve at Quail Hollow in Charlotte next month.

Spieth could become only the sixth man in history to win the career Grand Slam - Masters, US Open, The Open Championship, US PGA - with victory on 13 August.

Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods already have their names on a star-studded list.

Michael Greller, Jordan Spieth's caddie, explains to BBC Radio 5 live how he approached that incredible moment on the 13th: "That was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced as a caddie.

"I certainly didn't have any numbers from the right side of the range! I was looking at that gorse and we ended up playing about a 245 shot.

"It was on a great line and from there he just did what he always does - he just grinds.

"He's had some tough things happen and he knows what to do. I think it's the 13th time he's had the lead in a major. He's easy to work with.

"He's really matured a lot in the last six year since I've met him, so it wasn't that difficult."

So what about the US PGA?

"There's no pressure," added Greller. "He's absolutely free rolling it. He's just won a major and there's no pressure on him - that's what he wanted. I'm fortunate to ride shotgun with him."

Matt Kuchar played a fantastic round, but his wait for a major win goes on.

"It was quite a battle. Jordan just turned it on," the 39-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live.

"It was an amazing bogey he made at the 13th.

"I would've liked a few more of those putts to drop in. It's tough finishing second but I played well and all I can do is control how I played.

"Jordan played well and deserved to win."
