"Go, go, GO!" barks Tiger Woods at his iron shot on the fifth. It's almost excellent but just doesn't have enough beans to stay up on the level of the green the flag is situated. The spectators groan as the ball dribbles, further and further away from the flag.

On to the fourth for our leaders, and Xander Schauffele's reached into his bag and dusted off the driver - or rather his caddie has.

Will Jordan Spieth follow suit? He does, starting it right and watching it all the way into a tufty patch of rough.

  3. Pars for Kisner and Chappellpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    K Kisner -6, K Chappell -6 (4)

Kevin Kisner stops the rot on the fourth. After a double bogey-bogey run he makes par. He started the day as a co-leader, now the American is three back.

    A Noren -3 (5), T Fleetwood -3 (6)

A couple of tournament wreckers here... Alex Noren double bogeys the par-four fifth, a hole behind Tommy Fleetwood who does putt out for a seven.

Those two hit a snake and slither down the board, six shots adrift.

Paul Christie: It's one thing having a dazzling long game but time and time again poor wedge play let's Rory McIlroy down. That is why he hasn't won a major in so long.

Nicola Jade: I know it’s early in the rounds and anything can happen, but I really don’t see Jordan Spieth giving this one up today. When he’s in front he just knows how to get it done.

Lee Fergusson: With this wind. Carnoustie is really showing its teeth.

  6. 'Tiger roars!'published at 15:28 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Over on the adjoining sixth fairway, the roar for the first Tiger birdie of the day was a show stopper for Fleetwood, Johnson and the watching galleries. There are roars and there are Tiger roars. Nobody knew for sure what happened. But people turned to one another and just knowingly murmured: "That’s Tiger!!!"

Everything Tiger does is being cheered now. Another roar greets his tee shot on the fifth. The crowds are six or seven deep around the tee.

  10. Pars for Spieth & Schauffelepublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Spieth -9, X Schauffele -9 (3)

Shooting down the slope, Jordan Spieth, but with a touch of wind coming the other way. Plenty of fans nestled on the banks behind him, enjoying the Scottish sun.

Their cheers get louder as it rolls cup-wards, and then turn to groans as it comes up short.

Xander Schauffele is attacking it form the other side, this for the outright lead... ah, not quite, he leaves it just short and right.

    As you were.

Oh no, Tommy Fleetwood is still not on the sixth green. And this chip on is his sixth shot. This has got to go close... a neat touch should see him escape with a seven.

The sixth is a beast today and Tommy Fleetwood has made a real mess of this. He will be lucky to escape with a double bogey.

The fourth and 14th holes share a green the size of five-a-side pitch. Tiger Woods waits patiently for the pairing on 14 to take putts before delivering his first birdie of the day to a roar that will tell others on the leaderboard that Tiger is on the prowl.

  14. Birdie for Woodspublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    T Woods -6, F Molinari -6 (4)

Tiger Woods... can he make a good start an excellent one...

Yes he can! Tiger gets his first birdie of the day. An almighty roar from the crowds. A pump of the fist from the 14-time major winner.

He's the only one of the leaders below par for his round. The American is up into a tie for third. Is it happening?

  15. Birdie chances at threepublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    J Spieth -9, X Schauffele -9 (2)

Jordan Spieth coaxes an iron up just in front of the central bunkers on Jockie's Burn.

Xander Schauffele breaks of as he's about to swing at his approach, dusting a bit of loose grass from his ball, before clipping in to withing a few feet of the pin and watching it spin back.

Spieth flops into the middle of the dancefloor. Both within distance...

  16. Fleetwood strugglingpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    T Fleetwood -5, Z Johnson -3 (5)

That three putt for a bogey on the last has knocked Tommy Fleetwood off track. He's in all short of bother on the sixth... pulling his approach on the monster par five sixth into the spectators on the left.

That's not the main problem... going out of bounds is. Tommy Fleetwood dropping down the charts quicker than Mick Fleetwood.

  17. Bogey for Kisnerpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    K Kisner -6, K Chappell -6 (3)

Ouch. Kevin Kisner is collapsing. From the rough he finds the green but it's the proverbial country mile from the pin. He putts across a big hump but the ball runs four feet past. He hasn't missed anything from this length this week but does now. The putt does a loop-de-loop around the hole but doesn't drop. Three shots gone in two holes.

There's a real tension in the air because it's a Sunday of a major but also because the fans understand what a battle it will be for the players. There is a different buzz to yesterday when there were birdie putts everywhere.
