  1. 'I'm trying to compete at the top table'published at 14:02 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    MacIntyre -3 (F)

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre had a cracking start in his first Open Championship.

He drove the par-four fifth green and the eagle putt set him up for a great round.

The 22-year-old from Oban has been taking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm delighted. I hung in there all day, particularly when the weather got tough late on.

"My caddie didn't want me to hit driver on the fifth because it was wind behind but I wanted to stay aggressive. The ball was only a few yards from tumbling into the ocean but I then hit a great 45-foot putt.

"Every week I'm trying to compete at the top of the table and that's the mentality I need to have."

    McIlroy +3 (12) Casey E (12)

Up to the 13th, the sky is now beautifully blue as these conditions change again and again. Rory McIlroy sends his tee shot into the green on the par three and Paul Casey betters it, moving within 15ft for birdie.

  3. Double bogey for Thomaspublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Fleetwood -1, Thomas +3, Olesen -1 (3)

Oh dear, oh dear. Justin Thomas is not adapting well to Royal Portrush. He's in for six on the par-four fourth.

Thorbjorn Olesen's doing better. His second shot lands a bit short at the front of the green. He’ll need a decent chip…

And he gets one! The Dane hits the flag and can tap in for par.

It was a bit of a topsy-turvy ride for Tommy Fleetwood after his second shot landed way right of the green, but he’s in for par too.

    Koepka -1 (3) Casey E (12) McIlroy +3 (12)

Brooks Koepka with what looks like an iron on the fourth tee, lovely line with a very, very low trajectory.

Rory McIlroy has made a dog's dinner of the 12th - a par five - and will have around six feet for his par.

Paul Casey alongside Rors has a par putt of his own and he watches it painfully lip out. That's him back to level par and now McIlroy... sends it...in.

  5. Slim chance for Rorypublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

The Economist - a very useful magazine if you want to know the delicate balance of power in the Indonesian parliament. But what do they know about golf? Lots apparently.

Their EAGLE golf prediction model, external gave Rory McIlroy a 5.5% chance of winning The Open before he teed off. After his wretched opening showing, he is down to just 1%.

I think I have seen a few currency graphs recently take similar nosedives.

    Fleetwood -1, Thomas +1, Olesen -1 (3)

Tommy Fleetwood's shot just bounces between bunkers on the fourth.

But he's not so lucky with his second which swings right in the driving rain and is far, far from the green.

  7. McDowell back to two underpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    McDowell -2 (16)

Graeme McDowell has kept the bogey monster away for the majority of his round. But there is no escape as the rain comes down on 15.

A five and a dropped shot puts the 39-year-old back to two under.

  8. Some round...published at 13:44 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    MacIntyre -3 (18)

Robert MacIntyre looks like he's been through it today as he takes his cap off after making bogey on 18.

What a round for the 22-year-old on his major debut.

An eagle, five birdies, four bogeys, pretty much a full house. He's on the leaderboard and just one off the pace. Well played young man.

  9. A beagle on the sixth?published at 13:44 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

I've been sent out on my own. No summariser. I don't know if that's for disciplinary reasons.

One of the highlights of the day so far was spotting a beagle on the sixth tee. I think it had escaped being walked on the beach.

And there are Grasshopper Warbler birds around. And the odd Linnet.

Jordan Spieth is safely down the hatch for a par on the first. Marc Leishman also necks his par putt. As does Danny Willett.

An incident-free first hole for the 13:26 BST trio.

As we told you earlier, somehow in this live text we started talking about bunkers and you guys took to sending us the biggest sand traps you've played. Some have been colossal. Douglas is the latest to pitch in with his own sand battle.

We love it. Keep the golfing images coming to #bbcgolf.

  12. Back-to-back bogeys for Molinaripublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Molinari +4 (12)

Francesco Molinari is a very sad sight. The rain is absolutely hammering down on the defending champion as he takes cover under an umbrella after another bogey.

  13. Birdies!published at 13:39 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Oosthuizen -1 (2) Koepka -1 (2)

And so it begins. The Kopeka charge.

Hole two, par five, wedge to within six inches, birdie.

Louis Oosthuizen follows him into the cup for a tweet tweet. Oosthuizen is a smiling assassin waiting to happen. Often in the mix but falling short, I feel he has another major in him.

    Fleetwood -1, Olesen -1, Thomas +1 (3)

Tommy Fleetwood has a 15ft birdie putt but he's cool as a cucumber. The Southport man gets under par for the first time today.

Justin Thomas leaves himself with a long birdie putt on the par-three third. The ball edges left of the hole and the American can tap it in to stay on +1.

And no sooner is everyone drenched then the storm disappears and makes way for dry yet cloudy conditions. You’d have been forgiven for thinking this was a US major on the American west coast earlier in the week, such was the sunshine. Lee Westwood even had his shorts on for one practice round.

Fleetwood level, Thomas level, Olesen -1 (2)

Thorbjorn Olesen lands his tee shot a few feet in front of the hole on the par-three third.

Tommy Fleetwood is a bit further out and to the right, but can still have a go at a birdie.

  17. Great save...published at 13:31 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Casey -1 (11) Frittelli -3 (18)

Paul Casey on the 11th, he's in trouble. Trouble? What trouble? In goes a long putt to save par. It broke two ways and he just dropped it home.

Keeps him at one under, while up on 18 a dropped shot for Dylan Frittelli. The South African slips out of the lead, leaving Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre at four under.

Gary Woodland is reaching for his waterproofs! The rain storm that was due has arrived in quite spectacular fashion. Portrush currently feels like a 90s boyband - Wet, Wet, Wet.

  19. Bogey for Molinaripublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Molinari +3 (11)

Francesco Molinari has a big ask on the 11th. His 20ft par putt is a tad left and he drops another shot.

The defending champion’s lone birdie on the second seems a long time ago…

  20. Big birdie for Mac!published at 13:28 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    MacIntyre -4 (17)

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre is soaked. He's a hardened man who seemingly doesn't believe in a waterproof. And it's paying off as he drains a 30 footer for birdie on 17. That takes him into a share of the lead at four under.

This man laughs in the face of falling water.
