Now then, what's a Harris Hawk doing at a golf major, I hear you ask?

Shadow is here to scare off the seagulls that are lurking above the coastal course and looking for scraps being dropped in the spectator village - she's doing a pretty good job of it at the minute.

Handler John Carmichael, from the Northern Ireland School of Falconry, has four hawks with him at Royal Portrush this week and they're proving pretty popular with fans wanting photos, if not the seagulls...

  3. Spieth slips back to one underpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport golf correspondent at Royal Portrush

It's a huge disappointment obviously for Rory McIlroy but also for the crowd who would have been looking forward to seeing McIlroy deliver but it will now take a mighty effort for him to even make the cut and be here for the weekend.

  6. McIlroy finishes eight overpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    McIlroy +8 (E)

    Well, that is surely that.

Rory McIlroy's stinker of round finishes on a suitably bum note with an ugly triple bogey seven on 18.

He is EIGHT OVER for today and surely, even with three rounds remaining, cooked in terms of getting into contention for the title.

Rose -1, Finau level, Bjerregaard level (2)

It was a lightning start for Justin Rose with a birdie on the first and he follows it up with a solid par on the par-five second.

The signs are not good for Tiger Woods.

The Masters main man's second from the rough on the first is into the fairway sand. Ugly.

And this is one of the course's easier holes...

    Johnson E (1), Spieth -3, 7

Dustin Johnson's birdie putt stays up on the green on the first.

Elsewhere Jordan Spieth splashes a delicious bunker escape up to within a couple of feet of the pin on seven. His par should be a formality from here. It is.

Defending champion Francesco Molinari keeps scrapping until the end as he goes for a monster birdie putt on the 18th.

No birdie, but the ball stops just beyond the hole and the Italian taps it in to finish with a par.

Rory McIlroy is in for par on the 17th but after a heavy-handed pitch his slumped shoulders tell a tale. Who can blame him? That debacle on the 16th summed up his day.

  18. Tiger Woods on the coursepublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    Right, here we go.

On the tee is golf's ringmaster extraordinaire Tiger Woods.

Sporting a white sleeveless jumper, he touches the peak of his cap to acknowledge the cheers from the gallery.

He takes an iron, pulls a face and sees his ball burrow into the rough.

    Not an auspicious start.

Francesco Molinari knows he's hitting towards a flag, but he can't see it for the huge mound of deep rough in front of him.

The defending champion's approach soars to the back of the 18th green. The final hole has been the undoing of many today.
