That was certainly enough to whet the appetite for the first major on the calendar next month, as attention turns to the Masters.

Dustin Johnson will be there defending his Green Jacket, but are Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau or even, whisper it, Lee Westwood positioning themselves nicely to have a good crack at Augusta?!

We'll have comprehensive coverage of that for you, with the action getting under way on Thursday, 8 April - stick it in your diary, as if you haven't already.

    See you then...

Well, that was a hectic final day... what golf on Sundays is all about! But a first PGA Tour title in 11 years still eludes Lee Westwood.

  4. Postpublished at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

Thomas is also inevitably asked about his grandfather, who died recently.

"I wish I could talk to him right now," says the American, choking back the tears.

  5. A word from our winnerpublished at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Thomas -14 (F)

"I've played some of the best golf of my career this week."

  6. Westwood claims outright secondpublished at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Westwood -13, DeChambeau -12 (F)

Bryson DeChambeau is the first to putt. His ball is right on line but horseshoes round the hole and stays out. And that's been the tale of much of his round. He's just not holed enough putts.

Can Lee Westwood roll in from around a dozen feet to take sole possession of second place?

Yes he can. He raises his putter in mock celebration and the smile returns to his face as he embraces Bryson.

  7. Thomas wins Playerspublished at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Westwood -12, DeChambeau -12 (17)

Bryson DeChambeau is up first. Wedge in hand. His ball thuds into the green but ends up 15 feet long.

Here's Lee Westwood. This has to go in, otherwise Justin Thomas is our winner.

He goes straight at the flag and the ball finds the green. But it's not threatening the hole.

JUSTIN THOMAS WINS THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP.

  8. Postpublished at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

Lee Westwood needs an eagle two on the 18th to force a play-off. As does Bryson DeChambeau.

Both players are in the fairway...

  9. Thomas pars the lastpublished at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Thomas -14 (F)

Up on the 18th green Justin Thomas is almost home.

Can he finish in style? No. He's hit that a little hard but it's only going a couple of feet past the hole.

    Should be par. And is.

There's a muted reaction from the American before he goes to hug his family in emotional scenes. Thomas' grandfather, who was also a professional golfer, passed away a few weeks ago.

  10. DeChambeau pars 17published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    DeChambeau -12 (17)

Bryson DeChambeau tidies up for par after his birdie try rolled three feet by.

  11. Westwood bogeyspublished at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Westwood -12 (17)

From the edge of the green, Lee Westwood needs this seven-footer to drop. NO! It rolls round the edge and stays up. An inch. A solitary inch.

    Game over?

  12. Westwood misses birdie chancepublished at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Westwood -13 (16)

Right then Lee. This is one scary putt. Right across the green, downhill towards the pin, gathering pace towards the water a dozen feet beyond.

It's on its way. Never on line, rolling five, six feet past. Gulp.

Up on 18, Paul Casey knocks in for par to finish on 11 under.

Behind him, Justin Thomas is in lengthy discussions with his caddie. He's chunked that one a bit though, coming up just on the fringe of the green, a good 30 feet away from the hole.

That makes this par putt for Westy all the more important...

  13. Leaderboardpublished at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    -14 J Thomas (17)

    -13 L Westwood (16)

    -12 B DeChambeau (16)

  14. Postpublished at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Thomas -14 (17)

The danger is far from over once you're done with the 17th though. The 18th is one frightening drive.

Water all the way down the left. Justin Thomas sets his ball out right, drawing it back towards the water but the ball hits terra firma and bounds another 30 or 40 yards down the fairway. Perfect.

  15. Westy safely on 17published at 21:46 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Westwood -13, DeChambeau -12 (16)

Lee Westwood and Bryson DeChambeau watched that unfold from the tee.

Bryson is up first. "I tried, I tried," he tells his caddie as his ball lands safely on the green. It wasn't attacking the pin though.

What will Westy's strategy be? Par could be good enough if he can birdie the last.

The ball is in the air... right in the heart of the green. Pin high. 30 feet to the left of the hole.

  16. Par savedpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Thomas -14 (17)

For the first eight holes of this final round, Justin Thomas could not buy a putt. But on the back nine (the 14th apart) he has been rock solid with the flatstick.

A huge par saver there and advantage JT.

  17. Postpublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Thomas -14 (16)

Justin Thomas hits his putt up and across the ridge that runs through the middle of the 17th green. He immediately puts out his hand to signal he wants his ball to slow down.

It takes the borrow too soon and drifts four, five, six feet past on the low side.

Up on the 18th Brian Harman needs to chip in to get to 13 under. His effort is a foot wayward. Decent week for the American though.

  18. Eagle for DeChambeau, Westy scrambles parpublished at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Westwood -13, DeChambeau -12 (16)

Here's Lee Westwood surveying his options from the sand short of the 16th green. His best option seems to be a low squirter under the tree trunk with a bit of hook.

Not your regular shot. He makes a bit of a mess of it and plunges into more sand.

That's better though. He's out and to within five feet. Huge par putt. IN!

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau has been stalking his eagle putt after hitting a sensational second.

He's had all the time in the world to check out this 12-footer...IN IT GOES!

  19. Thomas stays dry on 17published at 21:36 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Thomas -14 (16)

Justin Thomas' tee shot on the 17th is accompanied by a cacophony of noise as it thuds into the green. It's safe.

It's a long way from the hole mind. Matt Fitzpatrick putted off the green from a similar location and ended up with a bogey.

  20. Postpublished at 21:34 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Casey -11 (17)

Paul Casey said the pin on the 17th would cause carnage today.

I'm not sure it's quite reached that level yet but he plays safely into the middle of the green.

His playing partner Jon Rahm finds a bunker and can only just escape.

Two-putt par for Casey. Needs a birdie down the last.
