  1. Dropped shot for Rahmpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -5, Rahm -3, Varner III -5 (15)

Big putt for Jon Rahm. This would be a bad time to drop a shot, but that's exactly what he's done as his putt starts out left and stays there.

    That's costly.

Spieth, for birdie after that lovely approach. No, he's missed it left too. He's still in touch but you feel he needs to pick up at least another shot before he finishes up for the day.

  2. Eagle for Daly!published at 14:34 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Daly -1 (5)

John Daly what have you done!

The former Open champion around here has pulled out a monster putt right across the fifth green for an eagle two that's really woken the crowd up over there.

Wild Thing rolling back the years, smacks his son and caddie Little John with a mighty high five then hobbles across to fetch his ball.

76 feet that putt was! Daly doesn't usually walk that far without a buggy on the golf course these days.

  3. Young chips in for birdie!published at 14:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Young -8 (4)

How about that?! It's been a stuttering start for Cameron Young but the American chips in for birdie at the difficult fourth to get back to even for the day.

That's one way to get your round going! He's back to within one.

    Spieth -5, Rahm -4, Varner III -5 (14)

Oh yes! Jordan Spieth dispatches a heat-seeker towards the flag at the 15th and he'll have a gilt-edged chance to move to within three of Dustin Johnson's lead.

  6. Fitz fires in another birdiepublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +7, Fitzpatrick -5 (15)

Tiger Woods just can't buy a putt to drop today - this one was only an outside bet to drop, but he's judged it brilliantly and it's tracking towards the hole but just runs out of puff.

Fitzpatrick has a much easier chance, which he rattles in with authority to move to five under and just four back.

  7. Birdies all roundpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -5, Rahm -4, Varner III -5 (14)

Jon Rahm races his eagle putt by. He'll be furious if he misses this birdie chance now, but no danger - in it goes!

Jordan Spieth also secures his birdie four courtesy of a sumptuous pitch from off the right of the green, and Harold Varner III follows him in!

Varner III is six-under for the round. Glorious stuff.

    Westwood -5 (1)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

Lee Westwood got a good reception when heading out for his second round, a hearty clap and a few “c’mon Lee” shouts - maybe the punters are just in a great mood because the sun is now beating down on the home of golf. That morning rain is long forgotten.

  9. Restless Rahmpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Jon Rahm isn't a fan of all the waiting around you have to do at St Andrews.

  10. Chance missed for Youngpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Young -7, MacIntyre -1 (3)

Cameron Young's given himself a great chance to immediately bounce back after that untidy five on the second, but his putt lips out!

A frustrating start for the New Yorker.

  11. Postpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Theegala -6 (12)

Another birdie for the exciting Sahith Theegala on 12 and at six under he's added his name to the list of challengers.

He came close to an eagle but he's more than happy to pick up a stroke.

  12. Postpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -4, Rahm -3, Varner III -4 (13)

Jordan Spieth sends a low second at the par-five 14th scuttling towards the green. It scurries on over to the right so the Texan will have a test of his short-game skills coming up if he's to reclaim the shot he frittered away at the last.

Big Jon Rahm-bo has smoked his drive. Time to attack and attack he does, sending his 237-yarder into the heart of the green. He'll have around 50 feet for an eagle, but he's thinking birdie after missing two makeable putts on 12 and 13.

Harold Varner III, who's got the best round going out of these three, is over the green in two.

  13. Pars for Patrickpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Cantlay -7 (12)

Three pars in a row now for Patrick Cantlay to start his back nine, which is still proving a bit tricky despite the placid conditions.

  14. Postpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Smith -8 (4)

It's 'just' a par for Cameron Smith as his birdie run ends, but that super-charged start has put him in a superb position where he doesn't have to chase anything from here on in.

  16. Big lip outpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +7, Fitzpatrick -4 (14)

And it's in...NO, it's not! A big, big lip out there even had Tiger walking after that one as he thought it was in, I thought it was in, the fans packed around the 14th green all thought it was in, going by the huge groans as the ball popped out.

  17. Postpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Young -7, MacIntyre -1 (2)

    Richard Winton
BBC Sport Scotland at St Andrews

First-round pacesetter Cameron Young took a long, rueful look at the leaderboard to the side of the third tee after that spilled shot at two. He knows he has work to do to keep up with the early starters.

So, too, does Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre after he also gave the course a shot back after an errant drive and over-enthusiastic approach on the second.

How's Bryson getting on? I hear you all cry. Well, nothing much doing so far as he's still on three under after four straight pars as Bryson looks to 'do a Faldo' at The Open...

  20. Spieth drops backpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -4, Rahm -3, Varner III -4 (13)

Jordan Spieth can' make his par putt and that's this group's first bogey of the round - an indication of how well they've been playing!

Now then, can Jon Rahm pick up another? Oh dear, that's a staggeringly weak effort, it barely made it halfway to the hole.

Anyway, he angrily pokes his par putt home and moves on, but that's successive birdie chances passed up.
