  1. Cantlay signs for a 67published at 15:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Cantlay -7 (67)

A bogey-par finish will not be exactly what Patrick Cantlay wanted, but a 67 is still a fine round and at seven under he's just three off the pace and in a nice position heading into the weekend.

Was he wiping tears or just a bead of sweat? Did he tip his cap, or was it waved? Is he limping more than when the day began?

You could not move for amateur body-language interpreters as Tiger Woods strode purposefully up the 18th.

It was oddly emotional to be witness to what was quite a touching scene despite the American - perhaps fittingly given how his two rounds here have gone - spurting his birdie putt past.

  5. Get Involved - Will we see Tiger again?published at 15:39 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Tiger Woods seems like he's said goodbye to St Andrews today, but he sounds like he hopes to be back at The Open and in competitive golf tournaments for a while yet.

His leg is obviously a huge problem, but he'll hope it gets stronger and next year he can give it more of a go.

And next year The Open just happens to be at Hoylake, where Tiger has won the Claret Jug before.

So, will Tiger Woods play in The Open again? Thumbs up for yes or thumbs down for no.

  6. Bogey for Morikawapublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -6, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -3 (2)

Woah. Not the start which Collin Morikawa hoped for.

The defending champion misses his par putt on the second. His Friday night might be spent scanning flight websites at this rate.

Rory McIlroy, we're reliably informed, knocked in another par. We didn't see it on the television.

  7. Smith takes the solo leadpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Smith -10 (8)

It's now five birdies in eight holes as Cameron Smith continues to put on a clinic in links golf - especially with that putter.

The Australian bounds out to 10 under and a one-shot lead ahead of Dustin Johnson, and he's not usually a man to play it safe so he'll be looking for more birdies.

  8. 'It felt to me like the last time' - Tiger Woodspublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Tiger Woods, talking to Sky Sports after the emotional end to his round, and Open:

"My two days' play - I made my share of mistakes. I struggled again to get the feel of the greens, same as yesterday. I had hit a couple of poor shots and just never got anything going. I needed to shoot a low one today and I didn't do that."

Describing the emotions as he walked to the 18th green:

"It was very emotional for me. I've been coming here since 1995 and the next one comes around in 2030 but I don't know if I will be physically able to play, so this felt to me like it will be last time to play at St. Andrews.

"I came to understand what Jack (Nicklaus) and Arnold (Palmer) felt in the past and I felt that way.

"They understand what golf is all about and what it takes to be an Open champion.

"I have been lucky enough to win here twice - it felt emotional because I don't know whether I will be able to play when it comes back here."

  9. Spieth, Rahm & Varner III together at four-underpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -4 (68), Rahm -4 (67), Varner III -4 (67)

Jon Rahm finishes in style with a wonderful birdie on the last, steering his 20-footer perfectly from left to right.

That's a 67 for the Spaniard, but it could have been even better had his putting been a little sharper on the back nine.

Jordan Spieth finishes with a par and signs for a 68, which again at one stage looked like being one or two lower.

Harold Varner III can't find a birdie to close, either, but his 67 represents an impressive comeback after yesterday's 73 as he matches Rahm blow-for-blow.

  10. Postpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -6, Morikawa E, Schauffele -3 (1)

Ooof! Colin Morikawa rattles the flag with his second shot on the par-four second.

Probably just as well because that could have bounded off the green.

The afternoon breeze is starting to cause a bit of havoc.

  11. Smith shares the leadpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Smith -9 (7)

Right, this Tiger Woods stuff is all a bit too emotional, so let's get back to the golf - and as we speak Cameron Smith joins Dustin Johnson at the top of the leaderboard on nine under.

Smith finds his fourth birdie of the day at the seventh to continue a flying start for the Australian - who won The Players this year in fantastic style. Could he add another big one here?

  12. Par for McIlroypublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -6, Morikawa E, Schauffele -3 (1)

Maybe the adrenalin is pumping a little too much for Rory McIlroy. Who could blame him after the scenes we've just watched.

Passing past Woods' potential farewell must have unsettled even the most battle hardened.

After leaving his approach short. McIlroy has a long putt for birdie and he doesn't give it enough gas. That provides a guide for Morikawa, who rolls his ball closer.

Tough putt left for par... excellent from McIlroy. Centre of the hole from the moment it left the face of the putter.

    Fours all round.

  13. 'It's an emotional moment'published at 15:26 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +9 (75)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

All eyes are on one Tiger Woods. I think he is enjoying the moment. He has his hands up to his eyes. It's an emotional moment - this isn't going to stop.

Bagpipes start up in the background. It is brilliant from Tiger Woods, to convert for a five-footer birdie but not to be.

In he goes for par - he almost has a word with the hole but the fans don't care. They are on their feet cheering and roaring.

  14. Tiger's St Andrews farewellpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +9 (75)

What a moment this was - an iconic and emotional few minutes as arguably golf's greatest ever player said goodbye to the home of the sport he loves so much.

And a sport that has benefited greatly from Tiger Woods over the years, let's not forget, as half the field this week might not be here if Tiger wasn't around when they were young.

He almost lost his leg, could have lost his life in that car crash, and he's put himself through physical hell to get fit enough to play in this event this week - and the crowd have responded with that send-off.

Let's hope it's not the last time we see him at The Open.

  15. 'Emotional send-off'published at 15:19 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

I think this is the first time this week we’ve really got a feel for the magic of this vibrant St Andrews crowd, with the grandstands packed, fans lining the road and even more spectators trying to get a view from the balconies behind them. And it’s only Friday afternoon.

His birdie putt doesn’t drop, but it doesn’t matter - Tiger Woods whips off his cap and waves to all those present as they rise to their feet to enthusiastically applaud him.

That says it all about their adoration for Tiger, a man who has twice lifted the Claret Jug here, and it’s an emotional send off for the iconic American at the home of golf. But will it be for the last time?

  16. Tiger bows outpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +9, Fitzpatrick -6 (F)

Tiger Woods finishes off a difficult day with a par at St Andrews in front of his adoring fans - with the reception as big as anything given to any winner.

That's surely that for Tiger at The Open in St Andrews - and I think judging by his body language he knows that as well.

Whether it's goodbye to competitive golf is another matter, he seriously needs to get his leg in better shape in order to be able to put in the time to get sharp on the course.

All that's for another day though.

  17. Spieth drops shot at 17published at 15:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -4, Rahm -3, Varner III -4 (17)

Jordan Spieth paid a visit to the eponymous feature of the Road Hole and it's cost him a bogey. Back to four-under.

Pars for Jon Rahm and Harold Varner III, so it's on to the last they go.

I don't know about you but that got me a bit wobbly as Tiger walked up 18 then!

Nice of Fitzpatrick and Homa to stand back and let their hero, golf's hero, the chance to stride down the St Andrews turf for one final time in The Open.

  19. Young ties DJ at the toppublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Young -9 (5)

Cameron Young has just played the fifth masterfully. Smoked his drive, walloped his second into the heart of the green and took two stress-free putts to pick up his second birdie of the day and join Dustin Johnson at the top.

  20. Tears for Tigerpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +9, Fitzpatrick -6 (17)

Tiger Woods has never been an emotional sort to say the least, but he's wiping away tears in his eyes as he makes his way to the 18th green amid a thunderous reception of appreciation from the crowd.

Tiger's given the world of golf everything over the last two decades, and everyone cheering him on here will hope that this is just a farewell to St Andrews, and not a farewell to The Open or even competitive golf altogether.
