  1. Carey through to the weekendpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Carey -5 (67)

Dublin's David Carey won't have to nervously check the leaderboard every five minutes to see where he is in relation to the cut - he's safely through to the last two rounds after an impressive 67 today.

His fellow Irishmen Padraig Harrington and Ronan Mullarney will both be heading home, while Seamus Power will need to tear it up down the stretch to make it through.

2019 champion Shane Lowry's right on the bubble, but he still has more than two-thirds of his round left so he won't be hitting any panic buttons.

    Smith -11 (11)

No birdie for Cam Smith at the par-three 11th. His tee shot was sensible, aiming just right of the flag and he seemed happy enough to take two putts from there.

The Players champion's progress today has been something to behold.

Cameron Young's 64 from yesterday is in danger of being eclipsed by the red-hot Australian.

Huge crowds lined the 18th fairway, the Swilcan Bridge in the foreground with the grandstands as a back drop.

Tiger Woods had seen this frame many times before, he’s stood on the 18th tee on his way to winning two Open Championships.

But you had to wonder what’s going through his mind right at that moment.

There were a few nervous gasps as Woods set his tee shot off a long way left of the pin - standing right behind it, the ball looked to be heading for the first tee before bringing it back around.

Woods strolls over the iconic Swilcan Bridge and takes his cap off the greet the crowd - Max Homa and Matt Fitzpatrick let him walk up to the green on his own to savour what is a resounding reception.

    What a gesture.

And then... were they tears? The emotion got the better of even the coolest of customers.

  6. Hovland birdies fourpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hovland -5 (4)

Viktor Hovland hasn't had the happiest of years, so it was good to see the bubbly Norwegian return a four-under 68 yesterday.

He's had a steady start today, too, with three pars followed by a birdie on the fourth.

Another few of those and he'll be right in the mix.

  7. A long goodbye?published at 16:22 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

For those just joining us, you have missed one of the moments of The Open. Not just this Open, but Open history.

About an hour ago, we saw the great, incomparable and unparalleled Tiger Woods walk over the Swilcan Bridge and up the 18th at St Andrews for what *could* be the final time.

Woods seems to think the Open won't return here until 2030 when he will be 54 years old.

Our man Alex Bysouth was there for an iconic and emotional moment which will live forever long in the memory...

  8. Young birdies ninepublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Young -10 (9)

Cameron Young had a shaky start to his front nine, but he's stuck to his process and it's yielding results. After birdies on four and five, he picks up another with a confidently holed put on the ninth.

The American goes out in 34 and sits just one back of Smith.

Rory McIlroy's putter is not yet hot. Plug it in baby!

Another putt slides past the fourth hole and he taps in for a par.

Playing mates Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele are unable to nab birdies either. As you were.

  11. Smith goes two clearpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Smith -11 (10)

Cam Smith's putt on the 10th? 91 feet. Hmmmm, it's a decent try but he leaves himself a good seven or eight feet for his birdie.

This guy is a wizard with the flatstick when he starts dropping a few, and he confidently strokes that birdie chance in!

Cameron Smith leads The Open by two shots, folks.

    McIlroy -6, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -4 (3)

Schauffele is on the opposite of the fourth hole to McIlroy, giving him a very different approach.

The American flights in a mid-iron, landing on a downslope in front of the flag and using another ridge at the other side to ease his ball into position. Delightful.

McIlroy, it turns out, needn't have worried too much about his tee shot. Ended up with the shortest path to the flag.

He joins Schauffele and Morikawa in the hutch and aiming to deliver a birdie.

Hand off the grip and instantly pointing right. Not a cool look.

Rory McIlroy looks like he's about to start a Steps dance move on the fourth tee. Right arm goes out in front and slowly moves east.

Luckily it's not a tragedy. He's way right but the ball avoids the gorse bush towards where it looked to heading.

  14. Theegala shines in Open debutpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Theegala -7 (68)

Just a slight increase in the draft and it's made 18 a lot tougher all of a sudden for Sahith Theegala - who is well short off the tee then balloons a high chip shot to the back of the green.

It's a tricky two-putt from there - but he drains a testing second effort and that's rounds of 69 and 68 for Theegala in his very first two rounds in The Open.

Not bad for a 24-year-old PGA Tour rookie who only got into the event last week!

    Smith -10 (9)

Smith is swinging so freely right now. He's just walloped his drive onto the 10th green but it keeps rolling and rolling.

It'll be a monstrous putt, but considering his brilliance over the front nine, I'm backing him to take two from there and establish a two-shot cushion.

  16. Smith turns in 31published at 15:53 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Smith -10 (9)

Every par for Smith is a bit of a disappointment after that front nine, which he played in just 31 blows.

Let's see what the back nine holds, but the wind has just increased a little bit so it should make it interesting - it wasn't really a fair fight on the front nine.

  17. McIlroy misses birdie puttpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    McIlroy -6, Morikawa +1, Schauffele -4 (3)

After Morikawa sees his birdie putt dribble away, Schauffele has to wait for the go-ahead from the other side of the green.

That's because this is one of the famous St Andrews shared greens.

The slight delay doesn't bother Schauffele, however. Arrow hits bullseye. In oneeee!

McIlroy tries to follow suit. Just go down the same line, Rors...

Easier said than done, huh? The ball clips the left lip and escapes the trapdoor.

McIlroy's slightly aggressive swing of the putter tells us what he thinks.

  18. 'It has been incredible'published at 15:49 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

I just caught up with amateur Aaron Jarvis on the range, the first golfer from the Cayman Islands to play at the Open.

He’s sitting right on the cut line at level par after shooting a three-under 69 today and told me: “Hopefully the cut line can stay where it’s at!

“I thought it was going to be incredible and it has been. Hopefully we can have another two amazing days. It’s an honour to be representing my country.”

Not seen much of Rory McIlroy so far but boy it is worth the wait.

From a firm lie on the third fairway, the Northern Irishman uses the wind to his favour like a Peak District paraglider and swoops into the heart of the green.
