The answer to that previous question was putter. Good choice from Cameron Young and leaves him all set for a par.

Can Cameron Smith end on a high note? No! His putt lacks a bit of pace and snakes off to the left.

Bitty rounds for each man in the final group and neither really got going.

A double bogey apiece on the back half was the real card killer.

    Smith -12, Young -12 (17)

Uh oh. The Valley of Sin has managed psych out Cameron Young.

Looks like he gets caught between two minds and the result is a heavy chip which flies past the hole.

On the fringe at the other side of the hole. Putter or wedge?

The method for Cameron Smith was using the bank in front of the hole to take the sting out of his chip and leave him with a shortish birdie putt.

Sink that my man and you will be back to where you started the day.

It's going to be an epic shootout for the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon, with Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland the two protagonists at the centre of a gripping major championship again.

McIlroy's trying to break his eight-year major duck, while Hovland's gunning for his maiden major title.

If it's anything like today, we'll have a showdown to rival Stenson-Mickelson at Troon in '16 on our hands.

    Smith -12, Young -12 (17)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 Live

An awful lot of people have headed for the exits but a handful of people are staying. It has been a torrid afternoon for this final pair, but they will want to finish with birdies.

Interesting tactic from Cameron Smith on the last, bumping along a driving iron like he did yesterday.

Cameron Young cracks a three-wood but pulls it a tad left. The Valley of Sin is ready to lead him away from temptation.

  7. 'Clickety-click'published at 20:16 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -16 (66), Hovland -16 (66)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is really fitting that they should finish with birdies. What a sporting drama that has been between the Ryder Cup team-mates. Two rounds of 66 - clickety-click!

“Go on, go on, go on,” scream the crowd flanking the fairway and 18th green, trying to encourage Rory McIlroy’s eagle putt into the hole. Not quite. “That’s a gimme, right?” is the follow up before he prods in for a closing birdie and basks in the enthusiastic applause.

A good day’s work from both players - that’s the way to spend a Saturday evening.

Peter: I would really... really like Rory to pick this one up ... he's had such a bad time over the last few years... this would be reward for all that effort.

  10. McIlroy and Hovland both shoot 66 to lead by fourpublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -16 (66), Hovland -16 (66)

Can Viktor Hovland finish with a bang? It's an eagle putt for a superb 65. It's another wonderful lag putt and he brushes in for a bogey-free 66.

Rory McIlroy strokes his short birdie putt in and matches the Norwegian's score, producing a huge cheer from the packed grandstand behind the green.

    That wasn't bad, was it?

  11. Pars for Smith and Youngpublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -12 (17)

A birdie here would really boost Cameron Young going into the last.

About 12 feet out, slightly downhill and touch of left to right.

The American fancies it, goes after it but the ball doesn't drop.

Smith almost holes his chip and taps in for the par.

    Smith -12, Young -12 (16)

Different tack for Cameron Smith, who relies on fortune rather than braveness.

    "Left, left. Left!" he pleads.

The ball listens and avoids the bunker, then bounds around the green to leave Smith with a great result.

    McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (17)

McIlroy to go first, from the Valley of Sin. Ohhhh it's a brilliant effort, judging the pace impeccably.

A cast-iron birdie. He'll mark his ball but that's surely going to be a 66 for the Northern Irishman.

As we all know, one of the keys to cracking elite sport is between the ears.

Cameron Young, after that double bogey on 16, demonstrates that wonderfully on 17.

The daunting tee-shot over the hotel doesn't faze him, neither does taking on the Road Hole bunker and still getting his ball to check.

    Incredible control.

This is the applause for these fine two young golfers who have entertained us all afternoon and this evening.

    They have gone blow-for-blow.

    What sporting entertainment.

McIlroy and Hovland are met with a wonderful reception as they stride up the 18th.

As they should be, I hasten to add. Fantastic tussle all day long, and they'll surely be together again in the final pairing tomorrow.

    I can't wait.

It's been a joy to watch these two tackle the Old Course today.

They've reached the 54th hole of this captivating championship.

Can they sign off with two birdies?

Hovland's drive gets a massive scoot forward and rolls past the pin. He'll have around 40 feet.

Driving iron for Rory. Whack. It shoots up the fairway but settles into the Valley of Sin after taking a kick to the left. Not the first time he's been in there this week.

The crunch of spikes on the road as Rory McIlroy assesses his shot from the wrong side of the tarmac. The Road Hole threatening to eat into his chances of a fifth major crown… you can feel the tension in the air.

Even more so as he wiggles a few fingers on his right hand trying to tease the par putt into the cup. The spell might have failed but the crowd still believe in Rory’s magic touch with one hole to go this evening.

  20. 'Boos for Johnson'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

Scheffler has been all over the place, and Dustin Johnson has been going backwards.

And - there were some boos for the former number one Johnson.
