  1. McIlroy drops back to lead with Hovlandpublished at 20:04 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (17)

This would be a sensational save from McIlroy.

He sends the ball on its way. It's working its way back, but it can't get there.

    Bogey.

Hovland successfully converts his par effort and that's a brave four from where he was in two.

    They're tied again!

  2. Crazy birdie finish for DJpublished at 20:04 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -10, Scheffler -11 (F)

Isn't that just golf! Dustin Johnson's hit his worst drive in about 10 years and ends up with a birdie three on the last!

And he's still well in touch in this tournament as well.

Scheffler hits a more regulation birdie and he closes on 11 under after a bit of a wobble too. Both of them well in touch.

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (16)

Woah. Hovland plays a beauty from behind the green and it rolls down to around six feet.

    The pressure's on Rory.

  4. 'Wonderful and nerveless from Hovland'published at 20:02 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -15, Hovland -15 (17)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Wonderful play and nerveless stuff from Hovland. He's only 24 - maybe that's a part of it.

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (16)

McIlroy can't get relief from the boundary wall, but it looks as though he has a swing.

He's going to try and bump it into the bank. He does, and it comes up a good 30 feet short.

That could have been a catastrophe, but it's almost certainly going to be his first bogey of the day.

  6. Double bogey for Youngpublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -12 (16)

Cameron Young's mind must be racing. Back comes the putt... has it got enough legs to get up the hill? Only just.

Going to be a double bogey, surely.

Not such drama for Cameron Smith. His safer approach pays dividends, threatening to drop the birdie putt but having to settle for a par.

  7. Shanked it!published at 20:01 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -9, Scheffler -10 (17)

Johnson is a bit like me on the 18th tee, absolutely shattered and his brain's scrambled - so much so that he almost smacks the Swilcan Bridge with his low, sliced, almost topped tee shot.

St Andrews is so hard and crispy though that his daisy cutter still trundles along the fairway and gives him a decent shot in to this front left flag on the last.

    Smith -12, Young -14 (15)

Cameron Young's bold approach does not pay off.

The ball doesn't stick on the summit, bounding off to the right.

That's the first problem. A bigger problem then arises when he overcooks the chip and it disappears down the slope beyond the flag.

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (16)

Hovland from the rough on 17. He cuts a high one in there, but it lands on the nose of the Road Hole bunker and races through the green!

    Trouble.

McIlroy is bailing out to the right.

"Oh sit," he pleads, but his ball doesn't listen. It flies off the clubface and he's going to be nearly up against the wall off the back! He'll be chipping over the road.

It's the hardest hole on the course for a reason.

The cries of delight are currently like starting the throttle on an old car and listening to it rattle away - throaty.

Fans are pouring out the back of the spectator village, trying to cut around to the 18th to get view of the final groups coming home. A few are still in the Jigger Inn, dotted along the wall, leaning over to get that extra half a yard closer to the action.

  11. Scheffler three-putts for bogeypublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -9, Scheffler -10 (17)

Guess where Dustin Johnson ends up on the Road Hole? Yep, in the famous bunker of course!

To be fair, it's a nice escape and DJ gets his par.

Scheffler squirted his second onto the green and it somehow avoided the road so had a decent chance for par, but he's missed it and drops a shot out of nowhere.

    Smith -12, Young -14 (15)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 Live

It is a shame for the final group in the open (and they are still in contention) but the grandstand behind them is half empty for Smith and Young.

    Smith -12, Young -14 (15)

Smith, like he has most of the afternoon, goes first and finds the open part of the green.

The bigger-hitting Young goes for a more direct route. That's bold to try and get the ball stop near the pin.

It's like Table Mountain. Tough to reach and danger around each side.

  14. Postpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -14 (15)

Going left off the 16th tee has been a tried and tested formula today.

Camerons Smith and Young follow suit, ending up in the rough but opening up the green with the pin in a devilish spot in the bottom right corner.

The position of an inverted postage stamp.

  15. 'You know what's next'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (16)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Hovland has been confident with his first putts to give himself a chance because he knows he has to try and make a couple coming in. And the same for Rory as they stay in position.

And if you know The Old Course, then you know what's next.

  16. Postpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (16)

McIlroy doesn't like his drive at 17. He can't get the fade needed to bring it back to the fairway.

More rough, but again the lie looks OK.

Hovland grimaces as he lashes through the ball. In the rough down the left as well.

Huge shots coming up for both these players.

  17. Pars for McIlroy and Hovlandpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (16)

The graphic for Hovland reads 'birdie putt' but he'll be delighted to come away with a par. Getting the pace right, with a severe slope in front of him, is everything.

Oh my, he almost holes another unlikely one! Tremendous effort from down there, just burning the right edge on its way by, but he'll have five feet coming back.

McIlroy has 30 feet. It's another good lag, nudging it down to three feet beyond the hole so he'll have to mark his ball and watch Hovland tidy up, which the Norwegian does confidently. He's holed out brilliantly today.

McIlroy taps in. It's on to the Road Hole...

  18. Pars for Smith and Youngpublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -14 (15)

As suspected, a birdie for Cameron Young is too big an ask. But he'll take pars at this stage, for sure.

Over to Smith, from the edge of the green, up the hill... can he finally land something? No!

After cumulatively holing from 253 feet yesterday, feels like the Aussie has barely passed 25.3 feet today.

    Very little has dropped.

    McIlroy -16, Hovland -15 (15)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

Rory McIlroy saw where Viktor Hovland came up short there, walked towards the green and then pointed to a spot on the turf as if to say “that’s where I’m pitching it”. A little nod of the head in confirmation to himself.

  20. Postpublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -14 (14)

The confidence is flowing again for Team Cameron.

Young has a decent lie in the first cut on 15, enabling him to arc a high ball onto the green.

Smith, next, goes for a different approach, punching in a lower shot and using the natural contours of the green to good effect.

Birdie chances for both, although Smith's is much more of an obvious one.
