  2. 'Make no mistake, Smith won this'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

Cameron Smith stunned St Andrews by snatching the 150th Open Championship title by one stroke from Cameron Young, as Rory McIlroy finished third.

It is a first major for the Australian, who carded a magnificent bogey-free eight-under-par 64 that featured five successive birdies from the 10th hole to win on 20 under.

McIlroy, who led overnight by four shots alongside Viktor Hovland, closed with a two-under 70 to finish third, while Hovland tied for fourth with England's Tommy Fleetwood after a 74.

Make no mistake, though, McIlroy did not lose this. Smith won it.

  6. 'I gave another good account of myself'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    McIlroy -18 (70)

Rory McIlroy, speaking to Sky Sports, after a final-round 70 left him two shots adrift of champion Cameron Smith:

"I sort of expected someone to come from the pack and the two Camerons played really well today and made life difficult for me.

"I played a controlled round of golf but when I needed to make birdies at the start of the back nine, I just couldn't.

"I tried my hardest obviously but Cam Smith played an unbelievable first two days, got his bad one out of the way yesterday and followed it up with a great round today.

"I came up a couple short of what I needed. I thought I needed to get to -20 and I didn't quite get there, so disappointed that I didn't do that but I gave another good account of myself.

"I've just got to keep plugging away and keep moving forward."

Rory McIlroy says he won't be "too despondent" after this stinger.

Let's hope not, but it's got to hurt.

Philosophically, he looks at the bigger picture and says he is still happy with a wonderful season.

Let's hear what else he said...

Rory McIlroy was asked by NBC to describe how he's feeling:

"Yeah, just disappointment I guess. I had a great opportunity today to add to that major tally and I didn't quite get it done. I didn't feel like I did many things wrong, but the putter went cold on me throughout the round.

"I did what I wanted to do. I played a really controlled round of golf. I didn't take advantage of the holes I had been taking advantage of this week.

"Both Camerons, but especially Smith, went on a run on the back nine, I had to dig deep to make some birdies and I just couldn't.

"I got beaten by the better player this week. To shoot 64 to win an Open Championship at St Andrews is one hell of a showing, so hats off to Cam, he's had an unbelievable week."

More from a shell-shocked Cameron Smith on how it feels to be the new Open champion: "It's just unreal.

"This place is so cool, to have the 150th Open here at St Andrews and to walk away with the win is something I've dreamt of. I never thought I'd get this far. It's awesome."

On saving par putt on 17: "I was just trying to get it on the green and have a look. The putter felt hot all day. I knew if I could get within 15-20 feet I could have a look and I got away with it."

On joining an illustrious list of Open champions: "It's unreal to look at the names on this trophy and then see mine... I'm lost for words."

On tonight's celebrations: "I am definitely going to find out how many beers can fit in this Jug for sure."
