Cameron Smith matches the 64 Greg Norman shot to win The Open at Sandwich in 1993.

Rory McIlroy walks up to the gantry to conduct his post-round interviews, must be hard to try and articulate your feelings after that - Cam Smith just hit the back nine like he was playing Tiger Woods on the PlayStation.

Difficult to say Rory McIlroy lost that. Cameron Smith won it.

McIlroy plotted his way round precisely, sinking two birdies and not carding a birdie.

    That was the gameplan.

Birdie putts didn't drop for him. They did for Smith.

Fans are in the burn, some are trying to jump it - some failing - the fairway is flooded with people and a shout has gone out for a medic. They think someone’s done their knee… golf spectating isn’t designed to be an extreme sport.

There are still cheers of “Rory!” as an Australian flag flies. It feels like the end of a festival, for Cam Smith it will feel like a dream.

What a performance. What a champion.

The wait goes on for Rory McIlroy.

The overnight co-leader looks absolutely drained. Emotionally and physically.

Eight years and counting since he won his last major at the 2014 PGA Championship.

    Pretty good.

Chewing his lip is a tell-tale sign that McIlroy thinks the game is up.

He's boshed his drive far once again, but needs to knock in from just in front of the Valley of Sin.

Meanwhile, we see the Claret Jug engraver for the time. Another surefire sign that we have a winner all but crowned.

Then the rope behind McIlroy goes up and scores of fans run down the fairway.

It looks as though he will emerge victorious - unless McIlroy can produce the absolute spectacular.
