What a fantastic spectacle we have just seen on the 17th.

Always say the big players step up in the big moments and that was absolutely true.

Two fantastic golf shots and two of the best we have seen today.

  2. Cantlay responsepublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    1UP Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele (16)

This golf is coming from another planet now, talk about inspired. And talk about minerals, as they say, as Patrick Cantlay has just seen Jon Rahm almost hit an ace on the par-three 17th, so the match looks over.

Yet he steps off, stripes a beauty himself that rolls up to just about three feet! This looks like going down the last...

  3. 'That was perfect'published at 10:56 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Chris Wood
Three-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have nothing more to add.

That was perfect. What a golf shot.

The galleries erupted, thousands of people around this 17th.

    Fantastic from Jon Rahm.

  4. Oh my word!published at 10:55 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    1UP Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele (16)

Jon Rahm! This is just ridiculous from the Spaniard as he hammers an arrow off the 17th tee that comes within a few inches of going in for a hole-in-one!

Where does he get this stuff from?

  5. Hatton lands crucial blow!published at 10:53 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    1UP Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele (16)

Tyrrell Hatton lands it! He's missed a couple from about that range today but he's nailed that one.

And I know we've said it a lot but it's a 'classic matchplay' moment as Xander Schauffele then misses from six feet - no doubt that hole just started shrinking as soon as Hatton's putt dropped.

For all Hatton's histrionics once he gets those outbursts out of the way he really does settle and focus, and that was a nerveless effort under the most intense pressure you can imagine.

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (15)

Clumsy chips really from the pair of them and we're now down to a putt off - which is so often the case at the Ryder Cup.

The flat stick does all the damage.

  7. 'Fine margins'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (16)

    Chris Wood
Three-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Look at the fine margins.

Five or six paces between their two balls yet the American position you’d expect them to get up and down 8/9 times out of 10, but Europeans five or six times out of 10.

A slightly better position for the Americans.

  8. 'Four gladiators coming down the Roman fairways'published at 10:47 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (15)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

It feels like you're in the middle of a football stadium with five minutes to go and maybe extra time looming.

There's so much tension in the air, so much excitement and so many people.

They're all watching these four gladiators as they come down the Roman fairways.

  9. Crucial matchpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (15)

There's a huge crowd now around this match, and a lot more vocal support for the USA team than we've heard previously.

And it's not over yet you know. Europe have a huge lead but if USA win this they're just five behind, and if they claim the fourballs session then from being dead and buried it'll be game on for the singles.

The entire momentum of the Ryder Cup could swing with this match right here.

  10. USA escape with a halfpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (15)

Tyrrell Hatton just burns the edge with his 10-footer and that leaves Patrick Cantlay with about eight feet to escape with a half.

Which he does! That's some half from where they found themselves off the tee and Europe will be kicking themselves after that one.

  11. Postpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (14)

Xander Schauffele plays it nicely from way below the green and brings the ball off a slope to a very makeable putt around 10 feet - it's actually closer than Jon Rahm's effort a tough spot in the rough pin high.

    Lowry/Straka v Homa/Harman 4&2 (F)

If there is tension in the American team, Max Homa isn't aware of it...

    Yeah, right.

Homa says the spirit in the camp remains "great" - of course, he does - after helping the US get a much-needed point.

"It's good, we needed something to go our way, someone needed to spark something. I'm glad it's us," he tells Sky Sports.

"The mood in the camp is great, we know how good we are, we're good players.

"We're obviously in a big hole but we have the guys to dig us out of it."

  13. Troublepublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (14)

This last match will be seeing a few extra spectators now as the only one left on the course, and that just adds to the nerves and the tension in what is still a crucial match regardless of what the scores say.

America are in trouble but Tyrrell Hatton gives them a huge boost when he misses the green on the short side with their second, when anything into the heart of the green would've almost given them the hole.

Europe still in charge, but not making it easy for themselves.

  14. 'We talked about showing no mercy'published at 10:32 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    McIlroy/Fleetwood beat Spieth/Thomas 2&1

Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood after securing another point for Europe in the foursomes.

McIlroy: It was amazing. We talked last night after our great day about not showing any mercy and keeping our foot on the pedal. We knew they were going to want to get off to a fast start and our objective was to not let them do that. We played great from opening bell and won our first three holes. That set the tone for rest of day

Fleetwood: We have to respect the fight showed by [Spieth and Thomas]and how well they played on back nine. Obviously they are a fantastic team and it was a joy to be in a match like this. We were very focused on what we were doing and trying to get another point on the board.

On their pairing: McIlroy: We knew this was a possibility for a long time. We were very excited about it as we get on well and our caddies too. It is such a comfortable pairing for us and that has showed with how we have played.

On playing in the fourballs: McIlroy: Luke [Donald] tells us what to do. You may see both of us this afternoon.

    Lowry/Straka v Homa/Harman 4&2 (F)

A deserved win for Max Homa and Brian Harman, who have been the better American players in a field of failure.

Four birdies and two eagles - on 12 and 16 - did the damage.

Not only does it mean the Americans finally earn a desperately-need win, they have ensured the Ryder Cup will be decided in the Sunday singles.

Imagine if it had been all over today...

  16. 'American pair looking very strong'published at 10:28 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (14)

    Paul Waring
European Tour pro on BBC Radio 5 Live

The worrying thing for me as a European fan is Patrick Cantlay looks absolutely on fire now. He is swinging the golf club beautifully with great ball control and setting up eagles and birdies left, right and centre.

Since the ninth hole, both Americans have started swinging it better. Xander Schauffele is getting it into play and is going longer off the tee.

They are looking very strong now.

  17. All square!published at 10:27 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rahm/Hatton v Cantlay/Schauffele A/S (14)

The wheels are just coming off a bit for Europe here as they're in the rough and chipping with the USA in nice and close.

It had to go in, and it went way by the hole so that's three in a row for Cantlay and Schauffele and all of a sudden this match is all square and they're very much playing like the previously unbeatable pairing they were before yesterday.

It is understood that Patrick Cantlay refused to wear a cap on Saturday morning for his foursomes match because he is not getting paid to play in the biennial contest.

The US players were paid to play in the President's Cup - a Ryder Cup equivalent against a rest of the world team.

Cantlay was also the only US player to not wear a cap in their team photo.

Both he and his friend and Saturday morning playing partner Xander Schauffele also missed the US team's pre-Ryder Cup visit to the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club earlier in September.

Captain Zach Johnson said late last night there was "illness spreading through the camp", perhaps there's a little bit more to it.

    Never in doubt!

A ruthless putt from the Northern Irishman finally sees off the spirited challenge of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.
