With that mixture of stark realism and extravagant fantasy, day two of the Ryder Cup could have been the subject of a Fellini film.

    Cracking Italian drama.

    • Europe need 14½ to regain the Ryder Cup

Blimey, looks like Rory McIlroy isn't letting what happened on the 18th green lie.

Footage online has surfaced on social media of him having a pop at the Americans at Marco Simone before being bundled into a car by his wife Erica and Shane Lowry.

  4. 'We're in a great spot' - Donaldpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Europe 10½-5½ United States

Europe captain Luke Donald talking to Sky Sports:

"I think if you asked us to be at 10½ after two days we’d take it. We’re in a great spot. There’s always momentum shifts. I though we would maybe snatch a two-two this afternoon. Patrick Cantlay birdied the last three holes. It’s not like you can say we gave it to them. He played great."

On some positives, in particular Bob MacIntyre:

"To go alongside Justin Rose and be unbeaten all week with a win and a half, we always knew Bobby had a lot of guts in him. He’s a winner round here. I'm so proud of Bobby."

Have you asked or told your players what order they will be playing in?

"I have only asked one right now, I won’t tell you who but I have a plan and I’ll relay that to the team.

"I have got to put some blue on the board early."

Almost time for us to wrap up, but first let's hear some reaction from Europe captain Luke Donald...

  6. Why history is against the USpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Europe 10½-5½ United States

All said, we're set for a spicier final day than we all feared might be the case.

The bigger picture remains that Europe are well in command.

It would be a monumental and historic fightback from the visitors, with no team having ever recovered such a deficit.

Since 1979, only four of the 21 Ryder Cups have seen a team overturn a deficit going into the final-day singles .

    1993: US (one point)

    1995: Europe (two points)

    1999: US (four points)

    2012: Europe (four points)

  7. 'That wasn't right'published at 18:16 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Europe 10½-5½ United States

    Matt Wallace
Four-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm not going to lie, I was booing with everyone else here. That was pretty spicy there. I can accept giving it back. As much as you are giving it, you’ve got to be able to take it.

But Rory still had his putt there - so get out of the way. Once you’ve done your little bit, get out of the way. Don’t carry it on. That wasn’t right.

I think Joe LaCava was still interrupting Rory when he’s got to play. He waved his arms like it didn’t mean anything but you’ve got to have sportsmanship at the end of the day.

The boos from the European fans seemed to be mainly directed at Patrick Cantlay's caddie Joe LaCava, who exchanged a few words with Rory McIlroy.

The suggestion is that LaCava was celebrating a little too exuberantly for the hosts' liking in McIlroy's direction.

Shane Lowry hovered around in the role of nightclub bouncer too.

  9. 'Crowd was on me all day, I used it as fuel' - Cantlaypublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Europe 10½-5½ United States

Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark grab the final point of the day and have been speaking to Sky Sports:

Cantlay: "It was pretty subdued all day, we weren’t leading until the last hole. The crowd was on me all day, I just used it as fuel. Hopefully we can build a lot off this small amount of momentum we’ve got going.

"I told Wyndham we’re going to use it all day. I have never had so many standing ovations walking from tee to green."

Clark: "Pat was our guy today. I helped a few times but coming down the stretch I relied on Pat and he pulled off the shots."

Cantlay: "We’ve seen what they did at Medina, and we have a steeper hill to climb than they did but we’re going to give it our best shot.

Clark: "Hopefully we can do something special that we can remember for a lifetime."

    Europe 10½-5½ United States

What further makes that final win sweeter for the Americans - and more bitter for the Europeans - is Cantlay and Clark did not hold a lead until that last putt went in.

A tight match was led twice by Europe before that gutsy fightback.

Of course, Europe still lead by a very healthy five points.

The home side need just four points from the 12 singles matches tomorrow to regain the Ryder Cup.

But, no doubt, the US have wrestled back momentum and rediscovered their belief.

    Patty Ice baby.

More boos for the Americans, whose players celebrate by waving their caps at Cantlay.

Haha, you've got to laugh at that.

Cantlay hasn't been wearing a US Ryder Cup cap all week and it has been suggested it's because of a row over not being paid for the event.

  16. Cantlay wins the final match for the USpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark 1UP (F)

Nope, the Europeans can't save it.

Patrick Cantlay lands another incredible putt to win the final match for the US.

That puts a rather different slant on things...

    Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark A/S (17)

Cantlay celebrates by marching up to the hole.

There a few boos from the home fans, but not sure if that is directed at him particularly or something else.

Down to McIlroy or Fitzpatrick to save it then...

    Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark A/S (17)

Wyndham Clark knocks in and then it is all in the hands of Patrick Cantlay.

This is for a birdie from way downtown... OMG! He's only gone and converted it.

That's good enough for at least a half...

    Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark A/S (17)

Oh, these nerves are contagious for the Americans. Maybe that's what they've needed the doctor for...

Patrick Cantlay has delivered when it matters with the putter, but his chip from the rough on the side of the 18th is not as reliable.

Mocking jeers greet his ball ambling by the hole.

Wyndham Clark has another shocker on the last!

Same as yesterday, a great drive but a poor connection on the second goes right and an even worse third.

    This time he chunks it.
