Pantomime boos for Spieth and Thomas but you know these two are going to come out firing.

They need a point, they need red on the board early and to show they are here not to just give the trophy away, which is what happened yesterday.

    They will be fighting.

It's a blockbuster match to kick us off with Fleetwood Mac up against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

I’m on a media platform, at the back of the first stand. We’re five storeys up and as the Neil Diamond classic that seems to be omnipresent at sporting events rings out, the platform is wobbling.

I get dizzy on a kerb so this is not particularly comfortable.

Anyway, here comes the opening match…

So many issues for the Americans yesterday that you just did not expect from such a solid team on paper.

As the dark descended, Jordan Spieth was trying to find some accuracy on the driving range, Collin Morikawa (who lost both games after picking up 3½ points on debut in 2021) was going through the practice gears and Xander Schauffele was searching desperately for his touch on the greens.

Schauffele and Spieth are back in action this morning and will need to spearhead any US fightback.

  7. 'Zero sympathy for the Americans'published at 06:27 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

I found it odd Zach Johnson brought that into the public domain after his team had taken such a hammering rather than to talk about what was very nearly an excellent comeback in the afternoon.

He could have talked about it being very close in those matches, the fine margins, the cliches we hear all the time. That might have been a more commendable strategy.

Maybe they do have sniffles and you can commend his honesty but I am not sure.

I was sitting next to Dan Rapaport, the American journalist, when that word was coming out of the press conference.and there was zero sympathy from Dan.

  8. Illness affecting US Ryder Cup team - Johnsonpublished at 06:25 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

Friday evening's media rounds (which seem like 10 minutes ago to be honest) saw US captain Zach Johnson say that illness has spread through his team and contributed to their 6½-1½ deficit to Europe on day one.

Europe claimed a clean sweep of Friday morning's foursomes session for the first time ever to lead 4-0.

And the fourballs concluded with the US failing to win a single match in a day - another unwelcome first.

"We're fighting things internally," said Johnson. "It's kind of passed around a little bit, caddies, players. I'm grateful we have a team doctor."

Given what was said and the suggestion that it had caused issues devising pairings it will be interesting to see how the American players perform today on the back of one taxing day in the Rome heat.

If that Jon Rahm eagle was not enough to fire up the Europeans, this final putt of day one from Justin Rose really did cap the perfect Friday.

He and Bob MacIntyre were two down going into the final two holes but the elder statesman of this team was not ready to be overshadowed...

Here come the Europe vice-captains onto the tee. And Nicolas Colsaerts leads the now obligatory thunderclap.

It’s a slow build-up but a terrific crescendo. And followed by a rousing ‘Ole ole ole”.

It’s getting close to game time.

The Americans fought back in the afternoon and were ahead in three of the four matches for much of the session.

However, this brutal putt from Jon Rahm on 18 to tie match two was a further dagger blow into their hopes of retaining the Ryder Cup.

“Let’s get this party started” bellows an announcer down on the first tee as the sun creeps above the horizon.

He’s been counting down for about the past 15 minutes, urging those already in the 5.000-capacity stand to warm up their vocal chords. Tough gig.

Fair to say there’s not quite the clamour there was on the opening day though. A steady stream rather than the scrum of yesterday.

The stand will be full by tee-off time in around 30 minutes.

    Just drink in the stats.

    • First time Europe have swept the opening session 4-0 at a Ryder Cup
    • America did not even lead in a match for six and a half hours - and that only lasted 12 minutes at the time
    • Eight of the past 10 teams to lead after the second session went on to win or retain the Ryder Cup
    • No team has ever overcome a deficit of five or more points after day one to win

So, this is a foregone conclusion, right?
