  1. Eagle for Burnspublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    2UP McIlroy v Burns (9)

The locals have been silenced now by Sam Burns.

Well, not quite because there is a lot of admiring applause after what was one of the shots of the day.

McIlroy has knocked in for a birdie four but that still might not be enough.

Burns for eagle... clocked it. Wonderful three on the 537-yard par five.

Every time Sam Burns hits a shot it seems to be punctuated by a huge roar from elsewhere on the front nine.

And they are not for the United States’ players.

Burns won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship in March and is considered one of the best players on the PGA Tour with a putter in his hands.

But the Ryder Cup is a different matter altogether and given the overwhelming support for Rory McIlroy, this is proving a tough gig so far, for the American.

    3UP McIlroy v Burns (8)

Reaching a par-five hole in two is what most of us can only dream of, never mind sticking that second shot to within eight feet.

Sheer brilliance from Sam Burns leaves him with a golden opportunity for a golden eagle on the ninth.

Rory McIlroy is also up there for two, albeit with an eagle putt from a different postal code.

  5. Cantlay doesn't misspublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Rose v Cantlay 2UP (9)

Even when Justin Rose forces Patrick Cantlay to make a six-footer with a bit of break in it the American doesn't flinch - all this hat talk has done is steeled his resolve and he just doesn't look like missing.

You could probably chalk up this point to the USA already the way he's playing.

  6. Postpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Aberg v Koepka 2UP (5)

Brooks Koepka given respite yesterday afternoon, and spending time down the range instead of the course, looks to have been a sensible move.

Another birdie on the fifth doubles his advantage over European rookie Ludwig Aberg.

The 23-year-old Swede has not got going yet on his first solo outing.

  7. Scheffler edges aheadpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Rahm v Scheffler 1UP (11)

Two putts for the hole... Scheffler only needs just the one.

Scottie is starting to get hottie.

The American world number one takes advantage of Jon Rahm's chipping woes on the 11th and puts red on the very top of the pile.

  8. Thomas extends leadpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Straka v Thomas 2UP (5)

Well, well, Justin Thomas is making moves lower down the leaderboard.

He's closed out the fifth hole against Sepp Straka with a birdie to move two up.

That'll keep the US cheerleaders in full voice bac there.

  9. Postpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    2UP Hatton v Harman (7)

Tyrrell Hatton remains two up with both men making par on the seventh, but agains it's Brian Harman who has to sink the putt for the half. Quite evenly matched this one now but the American still has a two-hole deficit to get out of.

  10. Postpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Rahm v Scheffler A/S (10)

Blimey, Jon Rahm has knocked a chip from the side of the 11th green halfway back to the tee-box.

A tough lie sees his ball squirt out and flies way past the flag. Thought it was a shared green for a moment...

It gets worse. His attempt back up the hill hits apex and dribbles back down to his feet.

    Scheffler must be chuckling inside.

  11. Fleetwood edges aheadpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    1UP Fleetwood v Fowler (2)

How about that approach from Tommy Fleetwood on two?

He's got five feet to take the lead over Rickie Fowler. Never in doubt.

    Europe go one up.

  12. Fitzpatrick water trouble gifts Homa holepublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Fitzpatrick v Homa A/S (8)

Water trouble for Matt Fitzpatrick on eight who has had a shocker of a hole.

Max Homa will have the simplest task to level things up.

Just concede and move on I think Matthew.

  13. Hat countpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

Since it's been the talk of the Ryder Cup so far, let's do a hat count today, with several USA players joining Patrick Cantlay in not wearing hats today - when they all had done in the first two days.

Cantlay's good friend Xander Schauffele has come out without any headwear on today, and he's been joined by Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas in going hatless.

I'm sure they'll be asked about what's going on later, maybe just a bit of mischief making by Team USA or something more serious?

    2UP Hovland v Morikawa (10)

How about keeping Collin Morikawa at arms' length?

That's all Viktor Hovland is interested in as he's safely on the green in two on the 10th hole with Morikawa short.

Delightful spinning approach from the Californian gets him in tight though. He saves his par and Hovland follows him in.

You spot one Bradford City fan... and then two more appear...

When you've been away for a couple of weeks, albeit covering top-class golf, it's comforting to see sights that remind you of home.

I spotted Nigel flitting between the second green and watching the action unfold down on the fifth green.

The Bradford City fan is here with his brother and nephew. We had a brief chat about the Bantams' home defeat by Walsall yesterday and how much time manager Mark Hughes has left (I'd like to see him given lots, Nigel is losing patience) and then it was back to the golf.

  17. Hurry up, lads...published at 12:56 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Steve Sutcliffe
BBC Sport at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, Rome

There was a backlog at the eighth where Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns were on the tee as Matt Fitzpatrick marked his ball about 50 yards away on the seventh green.

Not the first time that’s happened either and we’re less than half the way round.

Some American fans joke that Patrick Cantlay, who is playing just ahead and not known for doing things in a hurry, is being at his disruptive best.

  18. McIlroy saves a halfpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    All good, Rors.

A neat up and down saves the half for McIlroy, maintaining his three-hole advantage over Sam Burns.

It was looking sticking for the four-time major champ after a wayward drive led to a tough approach which flirted with the water.

  19. Hojgaard goes two uppublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    2UP Hojgaard v Schauffele (3)

One of the shots of the day from Nicolai Hojgaard as he spears in an approach from 211 yards to within a foot for a kick-in birdie, while Xander Schauffele finds the greenside rough and can't chip-in for the half.

The Danish rookie goes two up after three.

  20. Postpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    3UP McIlroy v Burns (7)

A gasp goes up around the eighth as the crowd holds its collective breath.

Is McIlroy's approach going to get dunked? Luckily, the thick rough acts as a roadblock.

A chip over the ridge looks well on track for a birdie hole-out, heading straight for its destination before easing off the gas again.

With Burns set for a par after putting a 30-foot birdie putt close, five feet separates McIlroy from the half.
