  1. Reveley benefits from Hughes injurypublished at 16:32

James Reveley was thrilled to have ridden an Aintree winner on Maggio after coming in as a late replacement for the injured Brian Hughes.

"It was a horrible fall for Brian and I hope he has a speedy recovery. I rode the horse an long time ago and it was nice to get back on him.

"It was easy for him. He loved the ground and jumped like a buck but the ground is heavy out there."

That would have been jockey Brian Hughes' ride, but after his heavy fall in the first race of the day, it is James Reveley who picks a 50-1 winner.

Maggio made a mockey of those odds storming clear for trainer Patrick Griffin.

There were plenty of runners pulling up early however after thinking better of a vain chase on soft ground.

The recent rain might not be to the liking of Sir Des Champs in the biggie, but Nina Carberry could be climbing aboard a live one in the next.

Knock House, saddled by former Southampton and England footballer Mick Channon, is among the leading prospects in the Handicap Chase.

  9. Carberry ready for Sir Des Champspublished at 16:15

Nina Carberry admits she has never sat on her Grand National mount Sir Des Champs before.

"I've only watched him on television before," she tells Channel 4 Racing.

She also got some advice from AP McCoy, who rode the horse when he finished second to Bob's Worth in the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

"Hang onto him - he won't want to be at the front too long," says the 20-time champion jockey.

The going has shifted to Soft on all courses.

Who in the Grand National field might benefit from today's wet weather?

Well Kruzhlinin - a strong jumper, a good stayer, who likes a left-handed track - has shortened to 33-1 from 40-1.

It is going to be a slog out there. Might Richard Johnson guide him through the muck to victory?

The last amateur to win the Grand National was Marcus Armytage who romped home aboard Mr Frisk in 1990.

Patrick Mullins - riding for his Irish champion trainer father Willie - is gunning to be the next.

He takes the reins of On His Own who is currently around 40-1 in the betting.

Sam Waley-Cohen, on Black Thunder, and Katie Walsh, on Ballycasey, are also from the unpaid ranks.

Thistlecrack's trainer Colin Tizzard tells Channel 4 Racing: "Going down to the second last, he almost bolted but he never came off the bridle.

"You've seen what he has done and it is nice to watch. He goes as fast as you like for as long as you like.

"Last year, we went from here to the Punchestown Festival and there is no reason why he can't run there again, Why would you want to turn him out now?"
