Laura Wright has just belted out the national anthem, all soaring tones, vibrato top notes and grandstand finish.

Lovely stuff. The runners are heading from the parade ring.

The butterflies are not just fluttering, they will be flapping like a flock of pterodactyls in some of these jockeys' stomachs.

Mixed emotions here in the parade ring. Months of preparation has gone into so many of these horses getting here today. Some owners are expectant, some nervous. Jockeys are trying to banish nerves and look confident ahead.

Returning after a great spin last year, Ucello Conti would have been a lot closer but for one bad mistake. This has been the target ever since.

Ucello Conti is back for another crack after finishing sixth in the National last year. He has Daryl Jacob on board who won with Neptunes Collonges in 2012, but there is a suspicion that he would like it a little softer underhoof.

Scotand's first Grand National winner was way back in 1979 when Rubstic came home in the big one.

One For Arthur is the Saltire standard-bearer in this year's race hoping to become the second.

Trained in Kinross by Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore, One For Arthur was a convincing winner of the National trial at Warwick in January.

He jumped well over these fences in coming fifth in the Becher Chase.

Don't expect a front-running performance though. Jockey Derek Fox warns that he can be "one-paced and can be slow into his stride", but that "he came from a similar position in the Becher."

    Blaklion

Victory in the RSA Chase in Cheltenham last March as a novice set tongues wagging about Blaklion and running an excellent second behind Vieux Lion Rouge at Haydock helped bolster his case with the pair well clear of the rest.

However he is without an accustomed jockey with both Ryan Hatch and Willy Twiston-Davies injured. Noel Fehily gets the ride, but will have to end a run of failing to make the first four from 14 previous National rides.

Pleasant Company is my selection to win for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh.

The team triumphed with Hedgehunter in 2005 and Walsh was also successful on Papillon, trained by his father Ted, five years earlier.

Pleasant Company put in a most encouraging performance to win at Fairyhouse. He'll keep out of trouble, before - hopefully - gradually picking off rivals and arriving late on the scene.

Was well beaten at Cheltenham last year, but has recovered with wins at Punchestown and Fairyhouse.

There has been a lot of late support for this one.

This picture was taken just after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp plucked 14-1 shot The Last Samuri out of the hat for the club's dressing-room sweepstake.

    Possibly.

The German revealed in Friday's press conference that last year's runner-up was the name on his slip.

He won't have too much time to get into the build-up. His team are just back in the dressing room after a 2-1 win over Stoke.

    The Last Samuri

The Last Samuri is aiming to do something that has not been done since Red Rum in 1977 - following up a National second place with a win the next year.

He will also have to dupicate Red Rum's topweight victory of 1974 - no-one has done that since either.

The Kim-Bailey trained contender will give you a run for your money though. He has never fallen and is a proven performer at Aintree, coming third in the Becher Chase in December.

There are five TVs in the Aintree stewards room where officials can watch races via different angles from cameras on hoists out on the course.

All 40 jockeys are called into the small room before the Grand National for a safety briefing.

A winner here already this season, but, perhaps more importantly, Vieux Lion Rouge has been a winner everywhere else as well.

An unblemished record for this campaign includes a narrow win over Highland Lodge in the Becher Chase at Aintree.

However he will have to make up plenty of ground on his performance from 12 months ago. In the 2016 National he finished 48 lengths back from Rule The World in seventh.

Split loyalties in the Scudamore household today.

Tom will be aboard Vieux Lion Rouge - one of the leading contenders in the betting market - while his father Peter, eight-time champion jump jockey during his own heyday, has mastermined One For Arthur's preparations from their base in Edinburgh.

"Obviously, we're all itching to win it, and if it's not 'Arthur', of course I hope it's Tom," said Peter.

Meanwhile eight-year-old Myrtle - the daughter of Tom - is having her support to her father tested.

Peter has said he will buy her a new pony if One For Arthur wins.

Where else to spend your hen do than at the Grand National?

Helen Martin, 26, from Leeds, is here with pals ahead of her wedding to fiancé Karl in a fortnight.

“We came last year, loved it and are having a great day,” said the retail director.

“I’m going for Highland Lodge in the Grand National because my mum’s from Scotland.”

    Definitly Red

Not only Red Rum's hat-trick, but Red Alligator (1968) and Red Maurader (2001).

The colour red is considered lucky in China and a similar tradition might be started on Merseyside if Definitly Red continues the trend of red-themed National winners.

The prize piece of evidence in the case for the Brian Ellison-trained eight-year was a thumping 14-length victory over last year's runner-up The Last Samuri in the Grimthorpe Stakes at Doncaster last month.

Well handicapped as well, he has come in to 12-1 favourite.
