After drawing a blank from 1975 (L'Escargot) until 1999 (Bobbyjo), Irish-trained horses have won six times since including last year with Rule The World.

Gary O'Brien, a presenter with the At The Races TV channel in Ireland and part of BBC 5 live's Aintree team, is predicting another victory for his homeland.

"One of my favourite horses in training, Cause of Causes had Cheltenham and Aintree as his two main aims this season and pulled off the first leg of what could be a huge double last month," he says.

"He obtained valuable experience when eighth two years ago and is a more mature horse now.

Terminally ill five-year-old boy Bradley Lowery is the special guest of Aintree and has been given the honorary number 41 in the Grand National racecard.

He has met some of the jockeys and had a go on the weighing scales – coming in at 2 stone 12.5 lbs.

The visit comes a day after his family found out his latest and final round of treatment had failed.

“In the light of the news we’ve got, this is something good to focus on. I have no words for the support we’ve had – it’s been amazing,” said mum Gemma.

His dad Carl said Sunderland fan Bradley’s selection in the National was Saphir Du Rheu after chatting to jockey Sam Twiston-Davies.

  5. Elliott eyes decade-on repeatpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Gordon Elliott, then 29, had not had his trainer's licence 12 months when he arrived at Aintree for the Grand National in 2007.

He had not even won a professional race back home in Ireland.

But Silver Birch came home at 33-1 to catapult him into the spotlight.

A decade on and the outsider is one of the racing establishment's powerhouse trainers.

His was the top stable at Cheltenham this year and he leads the Irish trainers' championship that has been rival Willie Mullins' for the past nine seasons.

Three-time Festival winner Cause Of Causes and Ucello Conti, last year's sixth, are the loudest noises in his raiding party.

    More Of That

More Of ThatImage source, Rex Features

More Of That is the best horse Jonjo O'Neill has ever had according to the trainer.

Considering he has had National winner Don't Push It in his Jackdaws Castle yard, that is some praise.

However his potential has been reduced by a couple of operations to fix a respiratory problem.

He finished a solid, but unspectacular sixth in the Gold Cup, but jockey Barry Geraghty clearly fancies his chances having selected him over fellow Jp McManus contender Cause Of Causes.

  7. More of the same for O'Neill?published at 16:37 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

The Grand National was a monkey on the back of Jonjo O'Neill before 2010.

He had had second and third-place finishes in 14 attempts as a trainer, but no trip to the winners' enclosure.

Even in his riding day, he had failed to last the trip in eight starts.

Don't Push It ended that particular hoodoo.

More Of That is his hope today and has been on a steep curve of improvement. Can he peak just right for the big day?

The racecourse has several vets on site during the meeting and digital X-ray facilities to examine injured horses. There are also two solariums, with big heat lamps.

“If horse's want a bit of warmth, they can help a sore back,” says course director of racing Andrew Tulloch.

They'll be warrmed up whatever, with the sunshine beaming down on Aintree,

Officials at Aintree have made minor changes to three fences, all open ditches, on the National course ahead of this year's race.

One and a half million pounds was spent on modifications after two fatal injuries in each of the Grand Nationals of 2011 and 2012.

Since then there have been none, though in the same period there have been six in the four other races staged over the track during the year.

Next up, is the Liverpool Hurdle.

There is the bell in the parade ring.

Yanworth is at the head of the market after a win at the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, but this is a step up so stamina will come under the microscope.

Robbie Power - on the hottest of streaks - is aboard Supasundae who was a winner at Cheltenham.

Ballyoptic has twice fallen at the last this season, so will keep his backers on tenterhooks to the end.
