    Stradivarius wins third Gold Cup

Where might we see Stradivarius next? Trainer John Gosden had this to say:

“I’m very proud he’s won three and particularly proud for the man who’s done it, Bjorn Nielsen, the owner-breeder – he’s passionate about breeding and keeps trying to breed a Derby winner, but he’s got a very good Cup horse. For him it is profoundly fulfilling and it’s just a pity he can’t be here today.

“It’s down to Bjorn whether we come back for a fourth. We might just look towards the Goodwood Cup next, he’s won three of them already, then we might take a pull as there is talk of running in an Arc. He ran brilliantly in the Coronation Cup, so an Arc on autumn ground isn’t out of the question.”

There was a quote around immediately after the Gold Cup of 40-1 about Stradivarius for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Interesting...

    1640 Sandringham Stakes (1m)

Final race of the day and it's the turn of the fillies in the Sandringham Stakes

There has been plenty of interest in African Dream, ridden by Kieran O'Neill for John Gosden, who was second at Newbury last week.

But the danger could come from Declared Interest, ridden by Harry Bentley and trained by Ralph Beckett, and you can never rule out Frankie Dettori who rides Dubai Love for Saeed Bin Suroor. That's the first time the pair have teamed up for eight years.

"I am very proud of the horse and maybe we can go for a fourth Gold Cup next year.

"Until I pressed the button I didn't count my chickens but he took off and it was a great feeling.

"I have ridden lots of good horses and he's phenomenal, he's such a great character."

    Gold Cup

Winning jockey Frankie Dettori: "It's an amazing achievement. Only Sagaro and Yeats managed to win three times.

"This was always the plan to come here. We were confident although the rain this morning was against him because he has a tremendous turn of foot.

"I was actually surprised when I saw everyone was in trouble and he just took off. I am very proud of the horse. A wonderful feeling, just sheer joy."

  19. Tough challenge for Finest Soundpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 18 June 2020

    1610 Britannia Stakes

A bumper 23-strong field goes in the penultimate race of the day, the Britannia Stakes, which is run over a straight mile.

Finest Sound has been busy off the track after being gelded and undergoing a wind operation but looked good in a victory at Haydock ten days ago for Andrea Atzeni.

Verboten for the Frankie Dettori-John Gosden partnership will benefit from the extra distance after being beaten over seven furlongs at Lingfield.

And others to watch include Enemy (ridden by Oisin Murphy) and Khaloosy, for Jim Crowley.
