  1. History made as Highland Chief winspublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 18 June 2020

    13:15 Golden Gates Handicap

Bit of Royal Ascot history as victory for father and son training partnership Paul and Oliver Cole.

A first for joint licence holders as 20-1 chance Highland Chief charged late under impressive young rider Rossa Ryan.

Highland Chief, a son of Gleneagles, ran well when third at this meeting a year ago, behind a certain Pinatubo, who runs on Saturday.

  6. Can Frankie start day three with a win?published at 13:06 British Summer Time 18 June 2020

    13:15 Golden Gates Handicap

Day three starts with an interesting-looking handicap and it could be a chance for another winner for Frankie Dettori on Hypothetical.

Trained by John Gosden, the three-year-old disappointed in the recent Classic trial at Kempton but should benefit from that run.

Acquitted, the mount of Ryan Moore, could be one of the big dangers after a good performance at Newcastle earlier this month while Global Storm was a winner last time out at Newmarket.

Highland Chief showed some good form at last year's Royal meeting and will be out to do the same again.

  8. Stradivarius - star of the show?published at 12:58 British Summer Time 18 June 2020

    1535: Gold Cup (2m 4f)

All eyes are on Frankie Dettori and Stradivarius as they bid for a third Gold Cup win in a row.

Victory would see the six-year-old become the third three-time Gold Cup winner after Sagaro in the 1970s and Yeats, who won it four times from 2006-2009.

But the rain is not a friend to Stradivarius - "He does not want soft ground, if we get a lot of rain it dents that wonderful turn of foot which is his great weapon," says trainer John Gosden.

Aiming to spoil the party are Technician, the mount of champion jockey Oisin Murphy and Moonlight Spirit, ridden by William Buick.

  9. Wet, wet, wetpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 18 June 2020

The going ahead of racing on day three of Royal Ascot has changed to SOFT (from Good to Soft).

There has been 16 millimetres of rain after racing finished on Wednesday up to 11:30 BST today. Further showers are forecast for today, with Friday and Saturday predicted to be drier.

In the Gold Cup, the rain has led to support for second favourite Technician and suggestions that Stradivarius' speed will be blunted by the slower going.

    Royal Ascot day three

What a difference a year makes...

2019: Raucous scenes as a bumper Ladies' Day crowd of 70,000 racegoers roar on a Frankie Dettori four-timer at Royal Ascot.

2020: A smattering of jockeys, trainers, officials and media are at the course because of strict coronavirus protocols.

One thing remains the same - Frankie is the centre of attention as his mount Stradivarius goes for a third successive win in the Gold Cup.

But could the weather have a say on his chances...
